Xander Schauffele withdrew from the 2023 Tournament of Champions Friday midway through his second round at The Plantation Course at Kapalua. Citing some back discomfort earlier in the week, the pain eventually took over and forced him out of the tournament.

The 2019 champion was visibly uncomfortable throughout the duration of his first round before ultimately signing for a 3-under 70 but was hopeful some overnight work would allow him to see the finish line. Attempting to play through the pain and swinging at only 80%, Schauffele was unable to take anymore. Calling it quits on the ninth hole of his second round, Schauffele will look to heal up his back before a big West Coast swing in the continental United States.

Schauffele is currently committed to play in The American Express the week of January 16th in what would be his first start in Palm Springs since 2017. Not labeled as an elevated event on the PGA Tour’s new playing schedule, The American Express would count as one of the three tournaments Schauffele is required to play in in addition to the 13 elevated events.

The 29-year-old is expected to get an MRI this upcoming week to pinpoint the problem area in his back. Once adequately diagnosed, the world No. 6 should be back on his feet quickly after coming into 2023 having won three times in his last 12 starts on the PGA Tour in 2022.

Woods withdraws from Hero World Challenge due to foot injury https://golfingagency.com/woods-withdraws-from-hero-world-challenge-due-to-foot-injury/ Tue, 29 Nov 2022 08:57:02 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/woods-withdraws-from-hero-world-challenge-due-to-foot-injury/

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from this week’s Hero World Challenge due to injury, but remains confident that he will be able to play in ‘The Match’ with Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth on December 10, along with playing with his son Charlie at the PNC Championship the following week.
Woods, who serves as host for the Hero World Challenge, which takes place in the Bahamas, announced via social media on Monday that he has developed plantar fasciitis in his right foot. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the part of the foot that connects the heel bone to the toes, with symptoms including pain around the heel and arch. It tends to heal itself through rest and the application of ice packs.

The Hero World Challenge was supposed to mark Woods’ return to competition since his appearance at this year’s Open Championship in July. The 46-year-old has played just three times in 2022, during which he made the cut at the Masters and PGA Championship, as he continues to recover from injuries suffered in a car accident in February 2021. Since the crash, Woods has had multiple surgeries to rebuild his right leg and has said that he’ll never be able to play a full schedule on the PGA Tour because of on-going pain.

Sixteen of the top 20 players in the world are set to tee it up at the Hero World Challenge this week, with defending champion Viktor Hovland, world no.2 Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm, Thomas and Spieth among the stars on show.

Tiger Woods delays return due to plantar fasciitis, withdraws from Hero World Challenge 2022 https://golfingagency.com/tiger-woods-delays-return-due-to-plantar-fasciitis-withdraws-from-hero-world-challenge-2022/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 22:25:01 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/tiger-woods-delays-return-due-to-plantar-fasciitis-withdraws-from-hero-world-challenge-2022/

Following a more than four-month absence since last teeing it up at the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews, Tiger Woods was expected to return to the course this week at the 2022 Hero World Challenge, which his foundation hosts. Instead, Woods has been forced to withdraw from his own event and delay his return to golf due to an injured right foot.

“In my preparation and practice for this week’s Hero World Challenge, I’ve developed plantar fasciitis in my right foot, which is making it difficult ot walk,” Woods explained. “After consulting with my doctors and trainers, I have decided to withdraw this week and focus on my hosting duties.”

Sepp Straka, who is ranked No. 29 in the world, will replace Woods at the event, bumping the number of top 30 players in the field up from 17 to 18.

Though the injury is to the same leg that was surgically repaired in a February 2021 car wreck, it is not known whether stress on that joint caused the plantar fasciitis.

The Hero World Challenge was the first of three events in which Woods was expected to play before the conclusion of 2022. Woods still plans to team with Rory McIlroy against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in the latest iteration of The Match on Dec. 10, and he also expects to be healthy enough to team with his son, Charlie, in the 2022 PNC Championship beginning Dec. 17.

The Hero World Challenge is a small-field, no-cut tournament that will include Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler and last year’s champion Viktor Hovland in Woods’ absence.

December was going to be a particularly busy month for the 15-time major winner. After playing just nine competitive rounds all year, he was slated to play in seven over the next three weeks. Now that number is down to three — the 12-hole match with McIlroy, Thomas and Spieth in which carts will be used and two 18-hole rounds with Charlie in Orlando in which Tiger used a cart a year ago.

In the long term, this is not incredibly notable. Woods’ recovery, even after playing three majors in 2022, was always going to be up and down with constant stops and starts. This likely doesn’t even change the expectations for how many times we see him in 2023. It is expected that he will play most if not all of the major championships and, as he has stated in the past, perhaps tick off another tournament or two here or there.
