Sweden’s Linn Grant ended her first season on the Ladies European Tour with a third placed finish at the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, which was good enough to clinch the 2022 Race to Costa del Sol title.

The money list title was decided at the final event in Spain, with Grant battling alongside compatriot Maja Stark for the number one spot. But it was Grant who came out on top and clinched the title, accumulating 3,624.91 points from 17 events and ultimately, finishing 209.77 points ahead of Stark, with fellow Swede Johanna Gustavsson rounding out the top three.

“I’m very relieved to have beaten Maja, she stressed me out this week and she’s been stressing me out the whole season! I’m very happy to win the Race to Costa del Sol title,” she said. “It was a pleasure to have been able to play in the Costa del Sol region for the season finale and I would like to thank to Costa del Sol Tourist Board for their support.”

Grant won the Scandinavian Mixed Hosted by Henrik Stenson & Annika Sorenstam at Halmstad Golf Club back in June

Grant also secured the LET Rookie of the Year title back in October and as such is following in the footsteps of Laura Davies, Carlota Ciganda, Esther Henseleit and Atthaya Thitikul by becoming the fifth player to win both titles in the same season.

“It feels so nice to get both titles,” she explained. “Rookie of the Year was a little more straightforward and I knew that was coming but to get this one as well was more of the goal. I’m happy to have played well at the last round in Spain and to win it. They’re all great players and they have gone on to have pretty good careers after winning both titles, I hope to continue on their path as well.”

The 23-year-old began the year with a bang winning the Joburg Ladies Open in her first start on the LET since clinching her card at Q-School last December. From there, Grant recorded two top-10 finishes and one top-15 result but it wasn’t long before she was back in the winner’s circle securing victory at the Mithra Belgian Ladies Open. After a week of rest, the Swedish star then cemented her name in the history books by triumphing at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed – storming to a nine-shot victory and becoming the first woman to win on the DP World Tour.

Five further top-10 finishes throughout the summer – including at the Amundi Evian Championship – came her way before she won again on home soil, this time at the Skaftö Open to record her fourth victory of the year. And Grant’s rapid rise in 2022 has seen her climb from 277 up to 24 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.

“I think the Scandinavian Mixed is my standout moment,” she continued. “It was a big event and at home and everything that came with that. Plus, for sure the first title in Joburg because I think that set the standard for the season. I think Maja has had an incredible season and I think it’s been a fun season. It was nice to share this moment with her and this season and I think we will hold hands through our whole careers probably. This is huge for Swedish golf, having Johanna Gustavsson as number three on the rankings.”

2022 DP World Tour Championship scores: Jon Rahm wins for third time, Rory McIlroy wins points title https://golfingagency.com/2022-dp-world-tour-championship-scores-jon-rahm-wins-for-third-time-rory-mcilroy-wins-points-title/ Sun, 20 Nov 2022 17:29:22 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022-dp-world-tour-championship-scores-jon-rahm-wins-for-third-time-rory-mcilroy-wins-points-title/

Jon Rahm began the week sounding off about the Official World Golf Rankings. He ended it by collecting all the points available at the DP World Tour Championship and taking his third title of the season and third DP World Tour Championship in the last six editions of the event.

Rahm was adamant early in the week about how beating a handful of the best players in the world at the DP World Tour Championship was more difficult than beating a whole host of average players at the RSM Classic. Rahm received 22 points for beating Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton and Viktor Hovland, while whoever wins the RSM later in the day on the PGA Tour side will receive 38 points.

Rahm went against his own logic and made beating the top players — there were seven others in the field who rank in the top 30 in the OWGR — look rather easy. After a 70-66-65 start, Rahm shot 67 on Sunday while playing alongside U.S. Open champion Fitzpatrick. Combined, those two have now won five of the last seven DP World Tour Championships.

After going out in 33, Rahm came home in 34 for the trophy. At 20 under, he beat Hatton and Alex Noren by two and McIlroy by four.

“Because of COVID I never got a chance to defend my 2019 title, and even though I decided not to come last year, I came with the mentality that, well, nobody beat me in the last two years, so they are going to have to beat me again,” Rahm said.

Rahm has won this tournament now in three of the last four times he’s teed it up. He is 72 under and has defeated 212 of 217 competitors in those four starts. As referenced, he did not play it in 2020 as the defending champion nor did he make it over last year for the 2021 edition.

Rahm’s point about how OWGR points at the top of small-field events (there were only 50 golfers playing this week in Dubai) is legitimate. And while this is not the space to get into a deep dissection of the Official World Golf Rankings, I don’t believe there should be as much disparity between points allotted to the winner of an event where you have to beat seven other top 30 players and points allotted to the winner of an event where (no matter how many golfers were in the field) Brian Harman was the favorite.

Regardless, Rahm is not short on OWGR points. After taking the Mexico Open, Spanish Open and this event, he remains firmly in the top five in the world going into 2023 and has plenty of hype around him going into next year given how he finished this one. In each of the last six years, Rahm has won either two or three OWGR events. He is also the first player to win this particular event three times, and that touches off a run of seven events in 2022 in which his worst finish was T15 and the other six were in the top eight.

Rahm has primarily been buoyed by his putter during that stretch, a club that let him down earlier in 2022. This week in Dubai was no different as he finished second in the field in strokes gained putting en route to the victory.

“Honestly I cannot believe I shot 12 under with how badly I hit it off the tee on the weekend,” Rahm said. “I was just able to manage really well. I think a lot of those times when I pitched out, my wedge game saved me. On the greens on the weekend, I don’t know what my stats were. But inside 10 feet I was really, really, really solid, and that’s always going to carry forward. Any time I was on the fairway, my iron game felt great.

“I stayed aggressive and picked my battles, and again, I think I shot as low as I could have shot on the weekend to get this one.”

Despite the victory, Rahm fell short in the season-long DP World Tour points race where McIlroy, who came into this week ranked No. 1 on that list, went on to win. For McIlroy, it’s his fourth season-long title on the European side to match three FedEx Cups on the PGA Tour. However, this year marks the first time McIlroy has won both season-long races in the same year.

“It’s been seven years since I’ve last done it [on the DP World Tour],” McIlroy said. “Obviously this is my fourth one but it’s been a while. I’ve won three FedEx Cups since the last time I won, which was the Race to Dubai back then.

“It means a lot. … I was a model of consistency the whole way through the year. A lot of top finishes. I think my worst finish of the European Tour events I played this year was 12th at the start of the year in Abu Dhabi. A really consistent season putting in good performances. Would have been nice to get one win in there at the end of the year here. But Jon obviously played an incredible tournament and fully deserved it.

“[I’m] really proud of my year, and excited for 2023.”

“I’m as complete a golfer as I feel like I’ve ever been, and hopefully I can continue on that path,” he added.

Since 2011, there have been 22 total season-long points titles available on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, and McIlroy has remarkably won seven of them. He finished the year with 13 top-eight finishes in his last 16 starts worldwide.

Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick rounded out the top five in Dubai as the DP World Tour season came to a close.

Rahm wins Tour Championship as McIlroy seals title as Europe’s no.1 https://golfingagency.com/rahm-wins-tour-championship-as-mcilroy-seals-title-as-europes-no-1/ Sun, 20 Nov 2022 13:27:46 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/rahm-wins-tour-championship-as-mcilroy-seals-title-as-europes-no-1/

The DP World Tour’s 2022 season drew to a close in dramatic fashion as Jon Rahm, the third round leader of the season-ending Tour Championship, held off Ryder Cup team-mates Tyrrell Hatton, Alex Noren and Rory McIlroy to win by two shots.

The Spaniard went into the final round with a narrow one-stroke lead, but reeled off three opening birdies to stretch that advantage before bouncing back from a bogey on the fourth with three more gains to sign for a closing 67 and finish the tournament on 20 under par.

Rahm’s victory continues his love affair with Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course, where he now has three wins and another top-five finish in four visits. He also adds a fifth Rolex Series title to his collection, becoming the first person to achieve the feat.

McIlroy won the other prize on offer this week, topping the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex to win the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth time. The Northern Irishman capped a hugely successful year by becoming the European Number One, World Number One and FedExCup Champion at the same time for the first time in his career.

Rahm never relinquished the lead on day four, but did not look totally comfortable at times, as a series of missed fairways gave hope to his challengers who were queuing up behind him. He took a two-shot lead to the last but an errant tee-shot landed him in tree trouble and he only just cleared the penalty area with his second shot. But his gamble paid off as he two-putted for par on the 18th green to storm to victory.

Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren finished in a tie for second on 18 under, with McIlroy two shots further back in fourth. Tommy Fleetwood and Matt Fitzpatrick were in a share of fifth place on 13 under, with the latter shooting a disappointing closing 73 to end his chances of finishing no.1 in Europe.

LIV reject Ogletree wins Asian Tour event in Egypt https://golfingagency.com/liv-reject-ogletree-wins-asian-tour-event-in-egypt/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 20:52:36 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/liv-reject-ogletree-wins-asian-tour-event-in-egypt/

American tour professional Andy Ogletree chalked up the first professional victory of his career after winning the Asian Tour’s International Series Egypt at Madinaty Golf Club.

The 24-year-old 2019 US Amateur champion is currently suspended from the PGA Tour after playing in the LIV Golf event held in London in June. Although he was not a member of the PGA Tour when he played at Centurion – where he finished last and won ¢120,000 – Ogletree was issued with a six-month ban from entering future PGA Tour events.

Having since been dropped by LIV Golf following the signing of more high-profile players, the former Georgia Tech graduate was left with nowhere to play, so joined the Asian Tour, which has an affiliation with LIV Golf, taking part in events in Singapore, Korea and Morocco, before finally finding success in Egypt.

Ogletree, who shot a final-round 62 to beat fellow LIV player Bernd Wiesberger by four shots, said: “This is amazing, just incredible. I have always been a huge fan of match play, and that is kind of what it came to in the end; it was basically a two-horse race. I just tried to keep matching what Bernd was doing, and fortunately I kept making a lot of putts.”

Having missed out on winning his PGA Tour card at last year’s Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying School, Ogletree has no regrets about taking up LIV Golf’s offer earlier in the year.

“It gave me somewhere to play. It gave me the opportunity to get into the Asian Tour as well,” he said. “My big thing was I just wanted a guaranteed place to play. I didn’t feel I was getting better playing Monday qualifiers for PGA Tour events or playing the mini tours. What presented itself was LIV. It definitely helped that I was able to make some money and was able to fund what I was doing for the rest of the year.”

The Mississippi-born player now has the option of playing more Asian Tour events or returning to the US to try and Monday qualify for PGA Tour events once his suspension ends next month.

2022 LIV Golf in Miami leaderboard, scores: Dustin Johnson’s 4 Aces GC wins inaugural team championship https://golfingagency.com/2022-liv-golf-in-miami-leaderboard-scores-dustin-johnsons-4-aces-gc-wins-inaugural-team-championship/ https://golfingagency.com/2022-liv-golf-in-miami-leaderboard-scores-dustin-johnsons-4-aces-gc-wins-inaugural-team-championship/#respond Sun, 30 Oct 2022 23:07:06 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022-liv-golf-in-miami-leaderboard-scores-dustin-johnsons-4-aces-gc-wins-inaugural-team-championship/

The first LIV Golf season wrapped Sunday at Trump National Doral with the 4 Aces GC claiming the 2022 LIV Golf Team Championship crown. Led by captain Dustin Johnson, the all-American squad of Talor Gooch, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez successfully fended off Cameron Smith’s Punch GC, translating a memorable regular season into an even more lucrative year.

After narrowly getting by Cleeks GC in the semifinals match-play portion of the team championship, the top team from the regular season was able to utilize a well-balanced approach to reach a cumulative score of 7 under. This total was enough to skirt past Punch GC by a single stroke and both the Crushers GC and Stinger GC with margin.

Despite the team championship turning into a two-team race, there were still plenty of pivotal moments unfolding late in the day. The marquee pairing of Johnson and Smith delivered theatrics as the Champion Golfer of the Year signed for the round of the day with a 7-under 65, and Johnson turned on the after burners by delivering down the stretch to come in with a 2-under 70.

While the two headmen for their respective squads were the final pair on the golf course, the battle between the two teams ultimately came down to their teammates. Smith’s teammates Matt Jones, Marc Leishman and Wade Ormsby collectively shot over par, while Johnson’s were more than able to hold their own.

Perez was their biggest question mark coming into the week but contributed in an impressive fashion for the 4 Aces with a 2-under 70 after a poor regular season.

“I get a lot of grief, people saying I never show up, so I did today,” said Perez, whose best individual finish was a T15 at LIV Boston. “So, everybody can shut up.”

Gooch added a 1-under 71 while Reed carded a 2-under 70 to give the 4 Aces four under-par rounds. Reed’s final stroke proved to hold the most importance as the former Masters champion connected from roughly 10 feet for birdie on his final hole to break the deadlock between the top two teams. A par from Johnson on the 18th hole then secured the team title for the 4 Aces.

With its victory at the 2022 LIV Golf Team Championship, the 4 Aces won a total of five times in its first season together. Raising the trophy at each event held in the United States, the checks will continue to roll in as their effort at Trump National Doral came with a $16 million payday ($4 million per player).

All members of the 4 Aces will be eating good, but especially Johnson as his on-course earnings adds up to roughly $35 million for the season. Finishing the year as the top individual and leading his team to the ultimate prize, the two-time major champion was the clear star of LIV Golf in 2022.

“It has been amazing,” said Johnson. “Obviously, the fans are what makes it. This week has been incredible. The whole season has just gotten better and better and then obviously this finale has been unbelievable. … Coming down the stretch here, you couldn’t draw it up any better with me and Cam [Smith] battling it out to win the team championship.”

The other teams won’t be left scraping their plates as Punch GC earned $8 million for finishing runner up with Smash GC collecting $6 million and Stinger GC taking home $4 million.

Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC were in the mix early and tied for the lead halfway through the round until collective disaster struck for the LIV Golf Jeddah winners. Koepka carded four bogeys over a six-hole stretch while his brother Chase Koepka signed for a pair of double bogeys and sent their name down the leaderboard.

Stinger GC was never in the fight as LIV Golf Portland winner Branden Grace signed for a quadruple-bogey seven in his third hole of the day and sealed the fate for the South African squad with an 8-over 80.

2023 Masters bid secured as Harrison Crow wins Asia-Pacific Amateur with late flurry of birdies https://golfingagency.com/2023-masters-bid-secured-as-harrison-crow-wins-asia-pacific-amateur-with-late-flurry-of-birdies/ https://golfingagency.com/2023-masters-bid-secured-as-harrison-crow-wins-asia-pacific-amateur-with-late-flurry-of-birdies/#respond Sun, 30 Oct 2022 22:02:00 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2023-masters-bid-secured-as-harrison-crow-wins-asia-pacific-amateur-with-late-flurry-of-birdies/

The 2023 Masters and 2023 Open Championship grew by a spot on Sunday as Harrison Crowe (-13) of Australia won the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship by one stroke over Bo Jin (-12). That sounds like a straightforward outing for the 21-year-old, who was set to turn pro after this tournament until those Masters and Open bids waylaid his plans, but it was anything but simple.

Crowe needed a 33 on the back nine — including four birdies in five holes at one point — to surge past Jin, who led by three at the turn, and claim the trophy. Even that doesn’t fully describe the drama.

Jin, still leading by one Sunday as he teed it up at the 17th hole at Amata Spring Country Club in Thailand — a true island hole where players have to take a boat to the green — hit his shot in the water on the par 3 and disappointingly finished double bogey-par to slip from 14 under to 12 under. Crowe, on the other hand, closed par-par on the last two holes to stay at 13 under and win by a stroke.

Crowe’s par at the last was an up and down that itself nearly went in the water and could have cost him invites into perhaps the two biggest golf tournaments of 2023. He hung on with a nervy putt at the last that touched off a massive comeback over Jin.

On Saturday after Round 3, Crowe did a bit of foreshadowing when the No. 43 amateur in the world openly discussed how he was going to turn pro but wouldn’t do it if his final round went like the first three. (He opened 69-67-67.)

“I would turn pro almost as soon as I get back home,” said Crowe after taking a two-shot lead entering Sunday’s final round of the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. “… I would love to delay that decision.”

While round No. 4 wasn’t quite as stellar, his even-par 72 was enough to make a dream come true. Now, he will as he’ll have to wait six months for the Masters and nine months for the Open.

“It means so much. I played a lot of really good golf early in the season, but towards the middle of the year when I traveled overseas, I didn’t play very good golf at all. So, I came out here this week with something to prove, and I’m just really proud of myself the way I handled myself on and off the course,” said Crowe.

The Australian joins an impressive list of former winners of this tournament.

Yannik Paul wins Mallorca Open with last gasp birdie https://golfingagency.com/yannik-paul-wins-mallorca-open-with-last-gasp-birdie/ https://golfingagency.com/yannik-paul-wins-mallorca-open-with-last-gasp-birdie/#respond Mon, 24 Oct 2022 07:46:39 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/yannik-paul-wins-mallorca-open-with-last-gasp-birdie/

German Yannik Paul won the Mallorca Open in dramatic fashion after he holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the final hole to snatch the title by a single shot from Nicolai von Dellingshausen and Paul Waring.

It was a day of high drama in breezy conditions at Son Muntaner Golf Club, where Paul had shared the overnight lead with Ryan Fox, who was in the hunt for his third DP World Tour title of the season. And while numerous players jostled and moved in and out of contention, the 28-year-old stood firm at the top of the leaderboard.

Paul, who shot a third round 62 that included three eagles, led or shared the lead for the majority of the final day, until his playing partner Marcus Armitage birdied the 15th hole to edge ahead. The Englishman, however, proceded to drop four shots in the final three holes to fall out of contention.

By the time Paul stood on the 18th tee,  von Dellingshausen and Waring had posted a clubhouse target of 14 under par. A birdie was required, and the 2021 Challenge Tour graduate duly obliged, holing his birdie putt on the 72nd hole from the fringe to sign off with a final round 72 and a 15 under winning total.

The win was his first on Europe’s topper tour and came in just his 26th appearance, making him the fastest German player to win on the Tour and moved him to 20th in the money list. Von Dellingshausen, meanwhile, received some consolation as his tied runner-up finish meant he will retain his Tour card for next season.

Paul said: “It was really hard today. My ball-striking was unbelievable all week, and I hit it really close on the first couple of holes, but I couldn’t make any putts. so it was really hard to stay in moment, but luckily the other guys didn’t make many putts either.

“I saw after nine holes that I was in the lead by one shot and then Marcus made a great shot on 15, so I was two shots back there and I thought it’s going to be close now. Unfortunately Marcus hit a couple of bad shots, but I couldn’t have dreamed for anything better in the end. I’m just so happy.”

Spilkova wins Women’s Irish Open https://golfingagency.com/spilkova-wins-womens-irish-open/ https://golfingagency.com/spilkova-wins-womens-irish-open/#respond Mon, 26 Sep 2022 11:01:37 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/spilkova-wins-womens-irish-open/

Klara Spilkova won the Women’s Irish Open after a three-way play-off at Dromoland Castle in County Clare.

The 27-year-old from the Czech Republic birdied the par-five 18th to defeat Nicole Broch Estrup and Ursula Wikstrom, both of whom made pars. The trio finished on 14 under par after a dramatic final day.

With a packed leaderboard, multiple players made their way on to the final green with a chance to move into at least a share of the lead. Denmark’s Smilla Soenderby had an eagle putt that would have moved her to 15 under, but she three-putted and did not even get into the play-off. Ireland’s Leona Maguire was one of four players to finish one shot back after a 68, including a birdie on 18 when she needed an eagle to make the play-off.

Before claiming her first win in five years, Spilkova, 27, birdied the last to card a round of 67, while Wikstrom forced her way into the extra holes with four birdies in the final five holes. The 27-year-old came into the day having recorded rounds of 66, 68 and 73 on her opening three days.

And Spilkova had a tough start with two bogeys in her first five holes, but she also made three birdies to make the turn in 34. Back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 saw the Czech player put herself right in the mix before another birdie on 16. A miraculous par-save from the edge of the water at 17 gave Spilkova the momentum and she finished her day with a birdie on 18 which at the time put her in the lead in the clubhouse.

“I have to admit that yesterday was a bit of a struggle,” said the winner, whose last title victory came at the Lalla Meryem Cup in 2017. “On eight and nine I made some bad swings, and I struggled throughout the back nine, I saved a lot of putts out there. Today it was a totally different approach, I felt much calmer. It has been a while since I’ve won, but I have been playing really well recently, so I knew that I had it in me to win.”

Shane Lowry wins 2022 BMW PGA Championship, edging Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm by a stroke https://golfingagency.com/shane-lowry-wins-2022-bmw-pga-championship-edging-rory-mcilroy-and-jon-rahm-by-a-stroke/ https://golfingagency.com/shane-lowry-wins-2022-bmw-pga-championship-edging-rory-mcilroy-and-jon-rahm-by-a-stroke/#respond Wed, 14 Sep 2022 06:51:21 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/shane-lowry-wins-2022-bmw-pga-championship-edging-rory-mcilroy-and-jon-rahm-by-a-stroke/

VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — Shane Lowry tapped in for birdie at the 18th hole and then had to wait and see if Rory McIlroy could produce something special to force a playoff at Wentworth.

McIlroy gave himself a chance and the crowd cheered as his long eagle putt on the final hole crept slowly toward the cup, only to stop less than an inch short.

McIlroy crouched down, staring at the ball in disbelief, while Lowry hugged his caddie in the scorer’s tent to celebrate a one-shot victory at the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday.

It was Lowry’s first win since the British Open at 2019 and came after a bogey-free performance over three days at Wentworth.

It was also, according to the 35-year-old Irishman, a win for all the golfers who — like him — have rejected the lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia-backed breakaway series LIV Golf. Lowry and McIlroy were both outspoken this week in criticizing the fact that a contingent of LIV golfers had been allowed to play at Wentworth.

“I wanted to go out and win this tournament for myself, first and foremost, but I think for this tour and everyone that has stayed loyal to this tour,” Lowry said. “I really feel like this is one for the good guys.”

McIlroy and Jon Rahm were tied for second, one shot back. Talor Gooch, who plays on the LIV circuit, was another shot back in fourth place.

It was Lowry’s first win since the British Open at 2019 and came after a bogey-free performance over three days at Wentworth.

The tournament was reduced to 54 holes with no play on Friday after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday.

Lowry finished with a 7-under 65 for a 17-under total of 199.

“I said to my coach this morning, `I need to just allow myself to play golf today,'” Lowry said. “I’m playing the best golf of my life, I need to just allow myself to do that. And I did that.”

Rahm surged up the leaderboard with a 62, rolling in an eagle putt on the 18th to take a two-shot clubhouse lead at 16 under. He then had to wait more than two hours to see if it would be good enough for the win, although on a low-scoring day at Wentworth it never looked likely to be.

A superb approach shot from Lowry on the 18th made sure of that.

Lowry hit an iron from 242 yards onto the center of the green — a shot good enough to earn an immediate fist bump from his caddie — and then rolled an eagle putt to within a few inches of the hole, leaving himself a tap-in birdie for the lead.

McIlroy, playing in the pairing behind Lowry, also had a 14-foot birdie putt on the 17th break just to the right of the hole. When Lowry then birdied the last hole, McIlroy knew he needed to eagle the par-5 18th — something he has never managed at Wentworth.

He came agonizingly close.

“I thought three feet out even that that putt was going in the hole,” said McIlroy, who won his third FedEx Cup title last month. “It just sort of wriggled right on me at the end. But overall it’s been another really good week.”

It was a first win for Lowry at Wentworth in his 13th appearance in the European Tour’s flagship event, having finished second to McIlroy in 2014.

“I love it here, I’ve contended in the past,” Lowry said. “The bad shots that I’ve hit over the years in contention actually started to creep into my head. It’s amazing what this game does.”

Shane Lowry was crowned 2022 BMW PGA champion after pipping Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm to the coveted title after an action-packed final day at Wentworth.

Following the cancellation of play on Friday, after the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the tournament was reduced to 54 holes and the Irishman played them flawlessly, managing to play the West Course three times without dropping a single shot.

A birdie at the last meant he posted a final round 65 and a 17 under total, but he faced an anxious wait as McIlroy, in the group behind, had an eagle putt at the 18th which would have forced a play-off with his close friend Lowry. McIlroy’s 23-foot effort just stayed above ground, though, meaning the Northern Irishman signed for a 67, finishing a shot back on 16 under. That handed Lowry his first victory in a tournament that means so much to him, in the first week of qualification for the European Ryder Cup team in 2023.

Rahm, meanwhile, carded a stunning ten-under 62 earlier in the day to lay down the gauntlet to the overnight leaders, but settled for a share of second place alongside McIlroy.

Lowry, who hadn’t won a tournament since The Open in 2019, said: “Winning this championship means a lot. I love it here and I’ve contended in the past, so it’s great to finally get over the line. It’s been a good year, but I’ve felt like I’ve been close a few times and I felt like I was running out of time to win this season. Obviously, this one is right up at the top the list, so I’m delighted to have come out ahead.”

The performances of Lowry, McIlroy and Rahm, three of the highest ranked DP World Tour members in the field, will have caused a collective sigh of relief in the corridors of power within the DP World Tour, many of whose officials no doubt feared that one of the 15 LIV golfers in the field would win the title at the tour’s headquarters.

That looked a very real prospect when Patrick Reed, one of the first players to join the Saudi-backed tour, fired a final round 63 early on Sunday to post the clubhouse lead at -14. Rahm’s 62 ended the American’s hopes of victory, but Talor Gooch, another LIV golfer, threatened to the spoil the party when he got with two of the lead with six holes left to play. However, the America’c challenge stalled over the back nine, and only an eagle at the par-five 18th lifted him into fourth place on 15 under.

Speaking to the media, Lowry expressed his delight at having ensured a LIV golfer wasn’t celebrating on Sunday night. He said: “I made no secrets as to how I felt about the whole thing at the start of the week. I wanted to go out and win this tournament for myself, first and foremost, but I think for this tour. Everyone that’s stayed loyal to this tour and everyone that’s done everything for this tour. I feel like this is one for the good guys.”

McIlroy, another player to have voiced his unhappiness at LIV golfers playing at Wentworth this week, was also delighted that the man to beat him was a friend and fellow DP World Tour player. “I think Shane winning softens the blow. If it had of been someone else, I might not have felt as comfortable with it as I am,” he said. “Seeing a friend win is always great and I’m really happy for him. I struggled today. I didn’t hit my irons very well. I was scrambling quite a lot. But I got the most out of my round. I sort of dug in there and did what I needed to to give myself a chance going down 18. I don’t take as much momentum as if I had won the thing but I keep saying, the more you put yourself in these positions, law of averages suggests that you’re going to get your fair share.”

Second round leaders Soren Kjeldsen and Viktor Hovland went backwards on Sunday, with both players shooting 70 to finish tied fifth with Reed and Thomas Detry. Defending BMW PGA champion Billy Horschel posted a closing 67 to finish tied ninth on 13 under.
