Don’t look now, but Tiger Woods is back in action this weekend as he and his son, Charlie, will headline the action at the 2022 PNC Championship. Playing in this two-person scramble for the third consecutive year, the Woods duo is joined by previous winners in Justin Thomas and his father, John Daly and his son, John Daly Jr. Also competing are Hall of Famers, including Annika Sorenstam, Nick Faldo, Lee Trevino and Bernhard Langer, alongside their respective family members.

LPGA superstar and former world No. 1 Nelly Korda is set to compete for the second straight year with her father, and making his PNC Championship debut is another former world No. 1 in Jordan Spieth. Playing for the first time with his father, Spieth will look to carry the momentum from his victory with Thomas at The Match 7 into a successful showing at the Ritz Carlton Golf Club.

Major champions Stewart Cink, Vijay Singh, Justin Leonard, Padraig Harrington and many more round out the action in what should be a fun-filled weekend in Florida. While a laidback family outing at its very core, the PNC Championship is still an opportunity to watch some of the best players in the world — past, present and possibly future — hone in on their craft before the calendar flips to the new year.

Here’s how you can watch this weekend.

All times are Eastern

Round 2 — Sunday

Round starts: 10:05 a.m.

Early coverage: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Peacock

Early TV coverage: 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. on Golf Channel & Peacock

Live TV coverage: 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. on NBC & Peacock

Event information

Event: PNC Championship | Dates: Dec. 17-18
Location: Ritz-Carlton Golf Club — Orlando, Florida
Par: 72 | Yardage: 7,106 | Purse: $1.09 million
Format: Two-person scramble

What is this event?

Formerly known as the Father/Son Challenge, this tournament has since rebranded to the PNC Championship. Having been played for nearly three decades, it has often been a way for major championship and Players Championship winners to team up with a family member of his choosing.

Only recently expanding on the field criteria, it has been a solid modification as Sorenstam and Korda have since joined in on the fun. With the influx of young talent like Daly Jr., who plays on the Arkansas men’s golf team, and Charlie Woods, who impresses in each appearance, the quality of golf, laughs and overall competition has ramped up.

What is the format?

Only 36 holes will be played as teams join forces in the scramble format. Like the format played in charity tournaments, each member of the team will tee off — from varying tees based on age — and select the best drive. This process is repeated with every shot until the ball is holed. There has been a story circulating of a team shooting 46 (!!!) at a scramble event, but I wouldn’t expect scores to be that low; instead, they should be in the neighborhood of low 60s of high 50s.

Has Tiger won this tournament before?

In short, no. However, last year he and Charlie came awfully close to chasing down the Dalys on the final day. At one point, the pair rattled off 11 straight birdies. Signing for rounds of 62-57, the Woods family came up two strokes short of claiming victory at 25 under. That will surely be on Charlie’s mind. Now 13, he is beginning to hit his growth spurt and will serve as a key component for Team Woods.

Who is in the field?

  • Stewart Cink and Connor Cink
  • John Daly and John Daly II
  • David Duval and Brady Duval
  • Nick Faldo and Matthew Faldo
  • Jim Furyk and Tanner Furyk
  • Padraig Harrington and Patrick Harrington
  • Nelly Korda and Petr Korda
  • Matt Kuchar and Carson Kuchar
  • Bernhard Langer and Jason Langer
  • Tom Lehman and Sean Lehman
  • Justin Leonard and Luke Leonard
  • Mark O’Meara and Shaun O’Meara
  • Gary Player and Jordan Player
  • Nick Price and Greg Price
  • Vijay Singh and Qass Singh
  • Annika Sorenstam and Will McGee
  • Jordan Spieth and Shawn Spieth
  • Justin Thomas and Mike Thomas
  • Lee Trevino and Daniel Trevino
  • Tiger Woods and Charlie Woods

What should we expect from Tiger?

This very well could be the last time we see Tiger in competition until February — if not April — for the 2023 Masters. With 36 holes guaranteed and utilizing a golf cart due to his leg and plantar fasciitis in his right foot, I expect to see some moments of vintage Tiger. Carving irons and hitting delicate pitches and chips — those are the moments to soak in as gone are the days of lashing at the driver and running in putts.

He showed some rust last week in The Match 7, but also signs that his game is close with a few filthy iron shots. Still, it remains a family-oriented event and Tiger will be insistent on using most of Charlie’s shots from tee to green while he looks on and takes in the sights and the sounds of a couple rounds with his son.

Picks and prediction

Team Thomas is the favorite at +275 and rightfully so. Justin looked terrific in The Match 7, carrying his team to victory, and his father Mike has been a PGA Professional for nearly 40 years. They won this event two years ago and came close to defending despite Mike experiencing some health issues at the time.

They are followed by Team Spieth at +450 and Team Woods at +500. In an event that could go a number of ways, I am unsure if I am comfortable backing Spieth and his father — whose game I have the faintest clue about — but Team Woods is intriguing. Their price is half of what it was a year ago and Charlie looks to have only gotten better.

I’ll go with the homer pick at the top of the odds board with the Woods and Team Harrington a bit lower at +3300 as a sleeper. Padraig has been playing some fantastic golf on the PGA Tour Champions circuit and signed for a 10-under 62 alongside his son in the final round last year, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they find themselves in the mix.

Hero Cup teams announced https://golfingagency.com/hero-cup-teams-announced/ Mon, 28 Nov 2022 12:34:30 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/hero-cup-teams-announced/
Rising star Rasmus Højgaard will be hoping to play in next year’s Ryder Cup

European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald has announced 18 players, including a mix of Ryder Cup stars, Major champions and the most promising young players, to make up the Continental Europe and Great Britain and Ireland teams for next year’s Hero Cup in Abu Dhabi from January 13-15.

In consultation with the respective Hero Cup captains Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari, who will both compete as playing captains, Donald confirmed the teams for next year’s match play contest at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, with one remaining position for each team to be allocated at the end of December.

Donald and Molinari have constructed a strong mix of proven winners with Sweden’s Alex Noren and Belgium’s Thomas Pieters bringing Ryder Cup experience to the Continental Europe ranks one week before the Belgian defends his Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship title at Yas Links.

Molinari’s team will be completed by a host of exciting young players, including Austrian Sepp Straka, who won his maiden PGA Tour title at The Honda Classic in 2022, three-time DP World Tour winner Rasmus Højgaard, two-time winner Victor Perez and Adrian Meronk, who became the first Polish player to win on the DP World Tour when he claimed the 2022 Horizon Irish Open.

Belgium’s Thomas Detry has also enjoyed a strong start to his rookie PGA TOUR season finishing in the top-12 in three of the five events played – including second place in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship – and has six top-15 finishes on the DP World Tour. He is joined by three-time DP World Tour winner Guido Migliozzi, who claimed the biggest victory of his career in September at the Cazoo Open de France.

Tyrrell Hatton will be teeing it up for GB&I in the Hero Cup

The Great Britain and Ireland team, led by two-time Ryder Cup player Fleetwood, boasts 2019 Open Champion Shane Lowry and four-time Rolex Series winner Tyrrell Hatton amongst its ranks.

They will be joined by a stream of Ryder Cup hopefuls, including Irishman Séamus Power, who has enjoyed a stunning start to the 2023 PGA Tour  season and currently leads the FedEx Cup standings, and DP World Tour winners Ewen Ferguson, Robert MacIntyre, Callum Shinkwin, Jordan Smith and Matt Wallace.

Donald said: “Having worked closely with Tommy and Fran on building the two teams, I’m delighted with the mix of players who will be on show at Abu Dhabi Golf Club in January. We all thought it was important to combine experience and youthfulness and I think we have found that balance with a mixture of Major Champions and Ryder Cup players, alongside guys who are hoping to secure a spot in Rome next year.”

Molinari, the Continental Europe Captain and 2018 Open Champion, said: “Our team is packed full of exciting players who all have the attributes to excel in a match play contest and I’m excited to lead them into the Hero Cup next year. Some of our younger players have already shown incredible maturity in high-pressured situations and proved they can perform in big moments, so giving them the opportunity to compete on this stage alongside the likes of Alex Noren and Thomas Pieters will be really important at the beginning of what could be a big year for them.”

Fleetwood, who combined with Molinari to collect four points from four matches at the 2018 Ryder Cup in France, said: “I am really pleased with the players who will form the Great Britain and Ireland team next year. Having the experience of Shane and Tyrrell will be invaluable for the rest of the team in a match play environment but I think we are really strong throughout the team. We have proven winners in some of the biggest DP World Tour events and it will be great to have Séámus with us following his excellent start to the season in America.”

The United States won Day 2 by a 4-1 margin — the exact same as Day 1 — and now takes an insurmountable lead into eight Saturday team matches, starting early with four foursomes in the morning.

It’s the foursomes where the U.S. has historically dominated this event. Based on its play over the first two days of this year’s Presidents Cup, that is expected to continue on Saturday as Davis Love III’s team could feasibly clinch the trophy by winning 7.5 of 8 possible points across two sessions on Day 3.

The International team has to find a spark just to keep the week respectable, but the U.S. is clearly trying to keep that from happening by rolling out Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in foursomes (alternate shot) early. The American duo have garnered a 2-0-0 record together thus far and will go against Sungjae Im and Corey Conners in a rematch of Day 1 action.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of Saturday’s morning session is who isn’t playing. The dynamite pair of Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay are sidelined, as are Billy Horschel and Kevin Kisner, for the Americans.

The internationals are sitting Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Mito Pereira, who captured a half point in four-ball on Friday. Taylor Pendrith and Sebastian Munoz both performed admirably on Day 2 and will join them on the bench. Captain Trevor Immelman’s team is up against the wall, and a massive morning session will be needed if there is any hope of a historic comeback.

The United States lit up the International team on the first day of the 2022 Presidents Cup by a 4-1 margin in foursomes (alternate shot) play and takes a big lead into the final three days of play, one that the Trevor Immelman’s squad is unlikely to overcome.

However, if the black and gold are going to do damage, it’s likely going to come in a four ball format that has been kinder to the International side over the years. Five more matches will go out in the middle of the day on Friday at Quail Hollow Golf Club as the International team tries to regain some of the footing it lost early on this week against Davis Love III’s squad.

Love has an embarrassment of riches to draw from as he has to sit two top 25 players in the world each of the first two days and four in each session on Saturday. After Billy Horschel and Kevin Kisner sat on Thursday, they’ll go out on Friday for what will be Horschel’s first-ever team play as a pro and just Kisner’s second such opportunity.

Similarly, Immelman will play Sebastian Munoz and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, both of whom watched the matches on Thursday, and they’ll both get their first taste of the Presidents Cup.

As for the other matchups, there aren’t many surprises on the U.S. side. Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas as well as Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele — the two most reliable pairings — will go back out. Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns will try and get a big of revenge after being responsible for the only point the U.S. lost on Thursday. Kisner will take Collin Morikawa’s spot and play alongside Cameron Young while Horschel will replace Tony Finau and play with Max Homa.

The International team switched everything up. None of the pairings on Day 2 are the same as they were on Day 1 with Immelman attempting to find something for his squad to cling onto going into the weekend.

The 2022 Presidents Cup is finally upon us after three long years of anticipation. A heavily favored United States side looks to hold onto the cup after a dramatic 16-14 victory at Royal Melbourne in 2019, while an up-and-coming international team will be out to shock the golf world.

In the time since the last event occurred, the U.S. has retooled its arsenal and introduced young stars such as Scottie Scheffler, Sam Burns, Collin Morikawa, Cameron Young and Max Homa. They will play in unison with familiar faces such as Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Tony Finau as all 12 Americans find themselves inside the top 25 of the OWGR.

While the Americans have added firepower, the international team has lost some of its own. In place of the losses, Sungjae Im, Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott will lead their squad into Quail Hollow Club and hope to build on nearly winning the international’s first Presidents Cup since 1998 and only the second all-time.

Featuring eight rookies, the international team is a massive underdog in Charlotte. While not unusual, this year’s Presidents Cup brings on a new feel as it finally felt as if the U.S. counterparts were ready to dethrone the 11-time champions. With outside forces at hand, a one-sided affair is all but likely to occur.

Let’s take a look at everything you need to know for the week ahead at Quail Hollow Club, and be sure to follow live Presidents Cup scores and results with four-ball on Day 2.

2022 Presidents Cup schedule, format

All times Eastern

Thursday: Foursomes — 1-6 p.m.
Friday: Fourball — 11:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Saturday: Foursomes and fourball — 7 a.m. — 6 p.m.
Sunday: Singles — 12-6 p.m.

Fourball: Teams of two face off against each other with every competitor playing their own golf ball. Each side will take the lower of the two scores for that specific hole. For example: If Jordan Spieth cards a birdie while his teammate Justin Thomas makes bogey, and both Sungjae Im and Hideki Matsuyama make par, the U.S. team wins the hole.

Foursomes: The more difficult of the two team formats. Teammates will play a single golf ball and alternate shots until the hole is completed. Players switch off hitting tee shots no matter who made the final putt on the prior hole. Typically, the better iron players will line up to tee off on the majority of the par 3s while strong drivers kick off the par 5s. Scoring remains the same and is the standard match play.

Singles: One-on-one matches over 18 holes. What is seen at the U.S. Amateur or WGC Match Play.

2022 Presidents Cup course

Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, has been a fixture on the PGA Tour, hosting the Wells Fargo Championship on an annual basis. Redesigned by Tom Fazio in 2016 in preparation for the PGA Championship, it measures 7,576 yards and plays to a par 71. Known for its finishing stretch of holes Nos. 16-18, “The Green Mile” has been moved up on the scorecard and will play as Nos. 13-15 to ensure competitors will see them in the match play format.

Presidents Cup history

With its victory at Royal Melbourne in 2019, the U.S. has compiled 11-1-1 record in the Presidents Cup. Despite the lopsided win total, there have been a couple close calls in recent memory, including the 16-14 affair in 2019 and the 15.5-14.5 bout in South Korea in 2015. The international team has struggled mightily on U.S. soil, and have not gotten within two points since the second Presidents Cup in 1996.

2022 Presidents Cup odds, favorites

Prop bets are abundant for the Presidents Cup, and Caesars Sportsbook has provided a handful in which to indulge. Here are three of my favorites.

1. Top Points Scorer — Sungjae Im (18-1): He is the international team’s best player, and will have to play in all five sessions if it’s are to have a chance. I love his fit for Quail Hollow, and could see him being paired with Tom Kim in what would form a formidable South Korean duo.

2. Day 1 Winner — Tie (25/4): If the internationals come close in any session, it should be the very first one. Without expectations, the visiting team will be able to freewheel around Quail Hollow and send out its stoutest lineup. At longer than 6-1, I don’t mind suggesting it hold serve on Thursday.

3. Day 2 Winner — USA (4/9): The 2/15 price on U.S. to win the Presidents Cup is steep, so instead target them in the preferred team format. The U.S. has made its hay in fourball throughout the years, and this time around should be no different given the substantial edge in skill and continuity.

Pairings to watch

Check out Day 1 pairings for foursomes.

Not Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth: While they may be best friends, they also cannibalize each other’s skillsets. Their partnership was one of the few lowlights in the U.S. victory at the 2021 Ryder Cup, and it may be time to separate the two most experienced members of this team.

Hideki Matsuyama vs. Justin Thomas in Singles: The two duked it out in the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow, and I would love to see them run it back. It could easily turn into a ball-striking exhibition to remember.

Cameron Young and Collin Morikawa: Dustin Johnson went 5-0-0 at the 2021 Ryder Cup thanks in part to his partnership with Morikawa. Young, being adequately long off the tee and proficient on the greens, could seemingly fill the void left by Johnson. This could be the beginning of a very long and successful marriage for the two 25-year-olds.

2022 Presidents Cup prediction

It is hard to imagine the U.S. not winning this Presidents Cup, but I reckon it will not be as easy as most are projecting. After stumbling out of the gates on Thursday, the Americans figure things out over the weekend and win to the tune of 17.5-12.5.

The 14th edition of the Presidents Cup begins Thursday as the United States attempts to defend the cup following its victory in the last edition of the event in 2019. Boasting an 11-1-1 all-time record, the U.S. side is filled with confidence as it features the world No. 1, major championship winners and players who have previously thrived at Quail Hollow

Favored substantially to win the 2022 Presidents Cup, the Americans will look to get off to a fast start in foursomes on Day 1. Captain Davis Love III has chosen a traditional route in his pairings with some common partnerships, while International captain Trevor Immelman has gone down a different path.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele will headline for the U.S. attempting to jumpstart the home crowd in the first match. The 2022 Zurich Classic winners put their 4-0-0 foursomes record on the line versus Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama. This is a pair Immelman will likely rely on moving forward, and a victory on Day 1 could give the entirety of his team a bolster of confidence.

Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas will follow for the U.S. and face the ball-striking duo Corey Conners and Sungjae Im. It was thought Conners would be paired with his fellow countryman Taylor Pendrith, yet instead, Immelman chose to pair him with arguably his best player. If you like crisp iron play, this is your match.

Fellow countrymen K.H. Lee and Tom Kim will experience their first Presidents Cup match together. The two rookies face a pair of American rookies in Cameron Young and Collin Morikawa in the third match. Morikawa is the only player in this group with any team experience as he debuted at the 2021 Ryder Cup.

Good friends Sam Burns and Scottie Scheffler will bat clean up for the Americans. They combined for seven victories throughout the 2021-22 season and face a volatile Si Woo Kim and Cameron Davis. This is a match that could be finished after 12 holes or go the distance — nothing in between.

Bringing up the caboose are two of the most likable players on tour in Tony Finau and Max Homa. With three combined victories since the end of July, this is a strong U.S. partnership and go up against a pair of international rookies Mito Pereira and Taylor Pendrith in the final match of Day 1. Billy Horschel and Kevin Kisner will be sidelined for the U.S. on Thursday as will Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Sebastian Munoz for the internationals.

Foursomes has been a format which has historically favored the U.S. team. Since 2007, it holds a 30-point edge over the International side in these specific sessions. If the underdogs expect to hang around early and keep this competitive, they will need to hold serve on Day 1 and put their flag on the board at least twice.

The 2022 Presidents Cup gets underway this week as a heavily favored United States team looks to keep the momentum rolling from their record-setting Ryder Cup victory last fall. Winners of eight straight Presidents Cups, the U.S. has dominated this team event and is primed to do so again led by American stalwarts Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

With each member of its team settling inside the top 25 of the Official World Golf Rankings, at first glance, a U.S. rout appears imminent. Yet standing in its way is a young, but dangerous, international side. Fully embracing the underdog mentality, 10-time Presidents Cup participant Adam Scott looks to lead a cast of new characters into Quail Hollow Club. Wyndham Championship winner Tom Kim, ball-striking maestro Corey Conners and two-time PGA Tour winner K.H. Lee headline international rookies hoping to aid Scott, Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im in pulling off the improbable.

With the talent, depth, and continuity all stacked against the internationals, few (if any) outside the team room are giving the visiting team a serious chance to claim victory. However, this fight will not play out on paper but rather the golf course, where we all know too well anything can happen.

With that in mind, here are our picks for the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow. Check out our breakdown of how the Presidents Cup teams stack up against one another, and our complete Presidents Cup TV schedule and coverage guideOdds via Caesars Sportsbook

2022 Presidents Cup expert picks, predictions

United States MVP

Kyle Porter — Justin Thomas: J.T. is 12-4-3 in Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups. He’s also the de facto leader (at least one of them) on the U.S. side. We know he’ll play either four or five matches, and the path to him going 4-0-0 or even 5-0-0 is there. He doesn’t need an equitable matchup to get jacked up for any team tournament, and history has shown that he’s an absolute force when he puts on the red, white and blue. Top U.S. points scorer odds: 7-1

Patrick McDonald — Tony Finau: I love the course fit for Finau, and I love that he may be paired with Collin Morikawa. Finau is only two months removed from winning back-to-back tournaments and nearly adding a third at the St. Jude Championship. He is one of the elder statesmen on this American side, and we saw at the Ryder Cup that he thrives in front of the U.S. contingent. Top U.S. points scorer odds: 9-1

Jacob Hallex — Xander Schauffele: Xander has hit new highs this season with three PGA Tour victories. We have a really good feeling he’ll be paired with Patrick Cantlay for the majority of his partner matches. It’s likely, with the four-day schedule, these two could play every session. I’m expecting him to rack up points as he comes into his own in the team format. At last year’s Ryder Cup, Schauffele was one of four players to earn three or more points for Team USA. He should go out early in Sunday singles and secure a point for the Americans. If you were looking at the betting markets, I would suggest splitting a top overall points score wager between Xander and Patrick Cantlay. Top U.S. points scorer odds: 25/4

International MVP

Kyle Porter — Tom Kim: There aren’t a lot of great options, but I’ll ride with youth in the 20-year-old Kim. He’s coming off an astounding end to his season where he won the Wyndham Championship, and his confidence will be through the roof in his first Presidents Cup. Plus, I doubt captain Trevor Immelman will throw him out against the J.T.-Spieth matchup or any of the other monstrous pairings the U.S. side can and will produce. Top international points scorer odds: 5-1

Patrick McDonald — Sungjae Im: Still only 24, Im has turned into the best player on this international team. With three runner-up finishes in his final five starts of the 2021-22 season, he is clearly in fine form and is a great fit for Quail Hollow. He will have to go in all five sessions if the internationals are to have a chance and I wouldn’t be surprised if he runs the table. Top international points scorer odds: 5-1

Jacob Hallex — Sungjae Im: We say it all the time on The First Cut Podcast, Im is a flusher of the golf ball. No longer a rookie, I hope to see him break out in the team format this year. The Korean pod for the International side looks cohesive and stacked this year with Sungjae set to be the leader. In 2019, he tied Abraham Ancer as the leading points earner for the Internationals. With Ancer out of the picture, it wouldn’t shock me to see Sungjae take the reins at Quail Hollow for Captain Immelman’s team. Top international points scorer odds: 5-1

Surprise prediction

Kyle Porter — The International team will keep singles close. Since 2007, the Internationals actually lead singles matches. This is likely due to the fact that the U.S. has often wrapped the event up early and often coasted to the finish line. Still, the Internationals have some unique firepower that, while it won’t be able to keep the foursomes and fourball matchups close, could be interesting on Sunday in singles.

Patrick McDonald — The U.S. will not win every session. The U.S. is not without its weaknesses and fourball would certainly be considered one. While improved in recent years, the Americans clearly prefer foursomes and singles; they often use those formats to claw ahead in this competition. With zero expectations, I expect the internationals to surprise and draw even with the U.S. in at least one of the sessions.

Jacob Hallex — Max Homa shines in team debut. Golf fans have been spoiled by recent generational talents emerging early on the PGA Tour. Homa isn’t old by any stretch of the imagination; he is just a guy who has taken a more traditional route to the upper echelon of the game. He has a dogged attitude and won on this exact course for his maiden PGA Tour victory. He mentioned after his dramatic win last week that he’s playing with a chip on his shoulder. Alleged Twitter naysayers tell him he doesn’t deserve to be on the team and LIV Golf defections are the only reason he’s in Quail Hollow. I’m looking forward to seeing Max play with that dog in him even as the U.S. side remains such heavy favorites.

Winning side

Kyle Porter — United States (20-10): This U.S. team, perhaps strangely, has something to prove. It’s not that it’s an underdog (it’s actually a heavy favorite) nor that it needs to show its bonafides at a Presidents Cup (it hasn’t lost this century) but rather that it will want to show that this year’s stars and stripes can match last year’s Ryder Cup Dream Team, which routed the Europeans at Whistling Straits. In a way, this U.S. team — with Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka absent — is competing against a former version of itself and setting the table for next year’s event in Rome, where it will again be the favorite. U.S. odds: 2/15 | Exact score odds: 12-1

Patrick McDonald — United States (17.5-12.5): It will be close early, but the U.S. advantage in skill, course fit, and continuity will ultimately give way. Riding a wave of confidence from the Ryder Cup, they roll to their ninth straight Presidents Cup. U.S. odds: 2/15 | Exact score odds: 11-1

Jacob Hallex — United States (19-11): I hope I’m wrong, but this contest by all accounts seemed to be pretty uniformly scripted by everyone in the media. I don’t see many calling for a shocking upset, and the oddsmakers don’t either. The U.S. side has great individual advantage that should shine during the singles matches and foursomes. I can easily see a scenario taking place where the Americans only need a few victories Sunday to clinch the trophy, thus leaving a spot for the Internationals to score some “garbage time” points. U.S. odds: 2/15 | Exact score odds: 11-1

2022 Presidents Cup: These sleepers could emerge as heroes for U.S., international teams at Quail Hollow https://golfingagency.com/2022-presidents-cup-these-sleepers-could-emerge-as-heroes-for-u-s-international-teams-at-quail-hollow/ https://golfingagency.com/2022-presidents-cup-these-sleepers-could-emerge-as-heroes-for-u-s-international-teams-at-quail-hollow/#respond Thu, 22 Sep 2022 09:40:26 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022-presidents-cup-these-sleepers-could-emerge-as-heroes-for-u-s-international-teams-at-quail-hollow/

You know the names by now: Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama. But what about those who have yet to make a name for themselves? In total, the 2022 Presidents Cup will feature 14 rookies with six coming for the United States side and eight being featured for the internationals.

While a pair of those Americans include Scottie Scheffler and Collin Morikawa, who were influential in the U.S. drubbing of the Europeans at the 2021 Ryder Cup, this week still marks their first experience in the Presidents Cup. Just one year ago, Scheffler was considered a borderline selection by captain Steve Stricker for Whistling Straits. The Wisconsin native’s pick proved to be a wise one as Scheffler played a key role in the competition by dethroning Jon Rahm in singles. He would later go on to become No. 1 in the OWGR, a position he still holds.

Something similar may possibly be in store for either Davis Love III or Trevor Immelman and one of their team’s members this time around. Quail Hollow Club could prove to be a launching pad for some of the youngest stars in the game, or even a veteran, and the team environment will be conducive to big moments.

In 2019, Abraham Ancer and Sungjae Im proved to be up to the task for the international side. Each gathered 3.5 points at Royal Melbourne and nearly led the international team to a dramatic upset victory over the Tiger Woods-led Americans. Facing heavy odds once again, the internationals will need more than a pair of their fresh faces to step up if they are expected to pull off the unthinkable.

Potential unlikely heroes for United States

Tony Finau (12-1 to be top points scorer): He may be one of the oldest members of the team, and has plenty of experience having played in three prior team events, but Finau has yet been treated as an elite player. Winning twice in the late summer, the world No. 14 almost added another at the St. Jude Championship, which would have upped his career win total to five in a blink of an eye.

He impressed in his Ryder Cup debut in 2018 at Le National, where even though the U.S. was outmatched, Finau garnered a record of 2-1-0 which included a 6&4 beatdown of Tommy Fleetwood on Sunday. Influential in Royal Melbourne and Wisconsin, the 33-year-old will serve as a key cog in Charlotte with Quail Hollow is statistically being right up his alley.

Sam Burns (12-1): A three-time winner during the 2021-22 season, Burns has fared well in team competitions before. Alongside Billy Horschel, the SEC duo finished runner-up at the Zurich Classic to U.S. teammates Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay. Despite this being his first Presidents Cup, Burns hardly feels like a rookie.

Likely to be paired with Horschel, the two will be a difficult out as they can run as hot as anyone on the greens. If not paired with Horschel, his good friend Scheffler may be an ideal partner as the laidback, easygoing nature of each is ideal for the high-pressure, chaotic environment which will engulf Quail Hollow.

Cameron Young (18-1): Of all Presidents Cup players, Young is second only to Scheffler over the last three months in strokes gained off the tee. The presumed Rookie of the Year is familiar with finishing one spot short as he captured seven podium finishes throughout his 2021-22 campaign, including the PGA Championship and The Open.

Young is an ideal fit for Quail Hollow, and his ability to rise to the occasion should serve him well. He seems to play with the ultimate chip on his shoulder, and if able to channel this quiet assassin mentality into the team setting, this could be just the beginning of a fruitful Presidents Cup career.

Potential unlikely heroes for internationals

Corey Conners (28-1): The internationals are in a hole before a tee has even been pegged into the ground. They must rely on some of their known quantities without the depth of the U.S. team, one of which is Conners. The Canadian may technically be a rookie, but his ball-striking has the potential to give the Americans headaches.

Second in driving accuracy and sixth in strokes gained approach over the last three months, Conners is one of the few players who is on par with the Americans in this department. He often struggles on and around the green, but we have seen poor putters such as Sergio Garcia thrive in this arena. Perhaps the same will go for Conners.

Taylor Pendrith (55-1): The second of the Canadians for captain Immelman, Pendrith could be a star in the making. Returning from injury in the midsummer, Pendrith notched six top-15 finishes in his last eight tournaments, including a runner-up performance to Finau at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Pendrith is supremely long off the tee — third in this field — and possesses the firepower to dismantle the American side. Similar to Conners, the putter can pose problems, but if strategically teamed with Tom Kim or Christiaan Bezuidenhout, those concerns can be squashed.

K.H. Lee (70-1): The sexiest golfer in the world has quickly become one of the best golfers in the world. Successfully defending his Byron Nelson title this past season, Lee looked Americans Spieth, Thomas and Schauffele — and even his own teammate Matsuyama — in the eyes en route to his second PGA Tour victory.

The moment is never too big for Lee; that was on display in the FedEx Cup Playoffs when he clawed his way into the Tour Championship via a T5 finish at the BMW Championship. He ranks sixth in strokes gained putting, and while the results haven’t been memorable at Quail Hollow, he has posted some strong rounds, including a 5-under 66 to kick off the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship.
