Another year means another venue for the CJ Cup as it heads to Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina. Previously held in South Korea at Nine Bridges, the tournament was moved to the United States due to the COVID-19 pandemic and found a new home in Las Vegas. After playing at Shadow Creek and The Summit Club over the last couple of seasons, the PGA Tour will make its way to the low country.

Despite the change in venue and time zone, Congaree Golf Club is another golf course molded by the hands of golf architect Tom Fazio, who is responsible for many courses on the PGA Tour, including Caves Valley, Corales Resort and Spa, and the aforementioned Summit Club. He even had some say in the renovation ahead of the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club — the site of the 2022 Presidents Cup.

The drama is high entering the final round on Sunday. Rory McIlroy holds the solo lead at 13 under, and should he be able to hold on for the victory, it would be all but guaranteed he rises back to No. 1 in the OWGR. However, the lead is far from safe as Jon Rahm is lurking one shot behind along with Kurt Kitayama and KH Lee. A thrilling finish seems to be in store on Sunday at Congaree.

Through two rounds of action, we’re trending toward two of the biggest stars in the game potentially dueling for the win this weekend. Former world No. 1 Jon Rahm surged to the top of the leaderboard on Friday to secure a tie with Kurt Kitayama at 11 under. Just two strokes behind, however, is Rory McIlroy, who remains in contention after a solid outing to kickstart his tournament on Round 1 on Thursday.

It makes perfect sense that Rory McIlroy will headline this field. The world No. 2 has dominated Fazio designs throughout his career and will have an opportunity to steal the top spot from Scottie Scheffler in the Official World Golf Rankings with a strong showing. Jordan Spieth will also be making his first start of the 2022-23 season after a splendid Presidents Cup that saw him command a perfect 5-0-0 record. In total, 15 of the world’s top 20 players will be making their way to South Carolina to play in what will be the strongest field of the PGA Tour’s final fall swing.

After a dramatic finish to the Zozo Championship in Japan, the PGA Tour heads back stateside for the 2022 CJ Cup in South Carolina. Hosted at Congaree Golf Club, the Tom Fazio design welcomes 15 of the top 20 players in the Official World Golf Rankings including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm.

McIlroy plays the role of defending champion despite his victory occurring hundreds of miles away last year at The Summit Club in Las Vegas. The world No. 2 hopes to win back-to-back titles at two different venues, much like he did this past summer at the Canadian Open. If McIlroy is able to accomplish this, not only will he another tally another one in the win column, but he will also have a strong chance to reclaim the world No. 1 title if Scheffler struggles.

The two faced off most recently at the Tour Championship where Scheffler faltered on the final day of competition and relinquished the FedEx Cup crown to McIlroy. The world No. 1 then experienced a poor Presidents Cup showing at Quail Hollow Club where he garnered a 0-3-1 record. The reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year will look to get back on track in his first start of the 2022-23 season.

The Texan is not the only one making his season debut this week; Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Matt Fitzpatrick and Rahm will be kicking off their campaigns at Congaree as well. Rahm is coming off a victory at the Open de España and Fitzpatrick nearly secured a DP World Tour title of his own at the Italian Open. The two Europeans should be in contention while Spieth and Thomas look to make runs after experiencing a brilliant Presidents Cup in Charlotte.

Let’s take a closer look at this week’s 2022 CJ Cup in South Carolina with odds provided via Caesars Sportsbook.

Event Information

Event: 2022 CJ Cup in South Carolina | Dates: Oct. 20-23
Location: Congaree Golf Club — Ridgeland, South Carolina
Par: 71 | Yardage: 7,655 | Purse: $10,500,000

2022 CJ Cup in South Carolina field, odds

  • Rory McIlroy (13/2)
  • Jon Rahm (9-1): Don’t look now, but Rahm learned how to putt. The former world No. 1 struggled in the early parts of 2022 with the flat stick in hand but has clearly turned a corner in recent months. Rahm has averaged +1.61 strokes gained putting over his last 15 rounds worldwide, and lapped the field in his victory at the Open de España. Coming off a down year (for his standards), if Rahm can wield the putter in such a manner, he could realistically repeat his 2021 when he captured his lone major title and was by far the best player in the world.
  • Scottie Scheffler (12-1)
  • Justin Thomas (14-1): The two-time major champion has captured at least one victory in seven straight seasons, but his total as of late seems light. While his two most recent triumphs were of great importance — the 2021 Players Championship and 2022 PGA Championship — Thomas is too strong of an iron player to go through another campaign raising only one trophy. Congaree should be an ideal fit as it boasts wide fairways, tight runoffs and will put an added emphasis on approach play where few, if any, are better.
  • Sungjae Im (22-1)
  • Matt Fitzpatrick (22-1): The U.S. Open winner came into 2022 swinging — both literally and figuratively — as speed training and added distance propelled him to a career season. Despite not playing in the U.S. since the Tour Championship, the Englishman has been getting his fair share of reps in across the pond. Playing four times in the last six weeks, Fitzpatrick arrives at Congaree off a missed cut at Valderrama where he was unable to put together a solid defense effort of his 2021 crown. He owns the skillset needed to pick apart this par 71, so it will just be a matter of whether he can bounce back from disappointing play his last time out.
  • Viktor Hovland (22-1)
  • Jordan Spieth (28-1)
  • Cameron Young (28-1)
  • Sam Burns (28-1): It was a Presidents Cup debut to forget for Burns who garnered an 0-3-2 record at Quail Hollow Club for Team USA. On the heels of a career season that included three trips to the winner’s circle, the 26-year-old was unable to find his bearings in his first team event as a professional. Long off the tee and electric on the dance floor, Congaree should be a get-right spot for the Louisiana native.
  • Tom Kim (30-1)
  • Shane Lowry (28-1): The Irishman probably should have nabbed at least one victory during his 2021-22 PGA Tour campaign but quickly rectified his inability to close in the states with a win at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Having the best statistical season of his career, I am interested to see how the 35-year-old will back things up, especially in a Ryder Cup year. The last time Lowry played in South Carolina, he finished T3 at the RBC Heritage where some final-round short-game troubles were his undoing.
  • Collin Morikawa (30-1)
  • Max Homa (30-1)

South Essex Golf Club - Brentwood, Essex - Club Partners 2022 v3

South Essex GC is a unique 27-hole layout set in nearly 300 acres of undulating countryside combines three separate loops of 9 holes.

Spaciously laid-out and designed with nature in mind, The Heron, Hawk and Vixen provide a variety of interesting course combinations. Blending into the gently rolling landscape, each hole is unique and offers a challenge to golfers of all abilities.

Practice before your round on our Toptracer driving range and enjoy a fantastic array of food offerings after your round of golf.

WOW! What a difference…

As a local Brentwood resident, I have had the pleasure of playing at South Essex Golf Club a number of times over the years. However, the change to the course (and Clubhouse) since my last visit in mid-2020 is huge! Not only have the owners spent a great deal of money on restoring the greens and fairways (to an excellent standard) but the hours that must have been spent re-landscaping some of the holes (and bunkers) is truly inspiring.

I counted at least six holes that look (and feel) completely different to what was there before. I have always maintained that Essex needs a good, superbly maintained but affordable golf club to play at…and this could be it. I can’t wait to go back and revisit. If you haven’t been to South Essex GC in a while, now is the time to visit!

WIN A LUXURY SOUTH DEVON GOLF & BEACH BREAK! https://golfingagency.com/win-a-luxury-south-devon-golf-beach-break/ https://golfingagency.com/win-a-luxury-south-devon-golf-beach-break/#respond Wed, 14 Sep 2022 05:29:43 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/win-a-luxury-south-devon-golf-beach-break/

Golf News has teamed up with the renowned Cary Arms & Spa in Babbacombe and nearby Teignmouth Golf Club, to offer one lucky winner a luxury golf break for two on South Devon’s stunning coast

STAY

The beach huts at the Cary Arms enjoy wonderful views over Babbacombe Bay

Owned by Peter and Lana de Savary, the award-winning Cary Arms & Spa combines the personality and values of a traditional English inn and the luxurious style and facilities of a boutique hotel. Couples, families and even dogs can enjoy a relaxed getaway with breath-taking views of Babbacombe Bay and miles of seascape along the Jurassic Coast.
With 10 elegant sea-facing rooms and suites at the inn, four restored fisherman’s cottages, and eight deluxe beach huts & beach suites, the Cary Arms is the perfect place to unwind and relax. Whether you choose a room, a beach hut or the added privacy of a cottage, all are individually designed for great comfort as well as calm.
Straddling the water’s edge, each beach hut boasts a spacious mezzanine bedroom with a porthole window overlooking the water, a sitting room with a stylish modern fireplace, and wall-to-wall glass doors that fold back onto a sunbathing deck.
Other facilities on site include a comfortable lounge, billiard room and a spa, which offers massages, facials, manicures and pedicures. Dinner, which is included in the prize, features a stunning menu featuring fresh local produce, so expect superb Devon beef and line caught seafood, including Brixham hake and chips battered with Otter Ale. In finer weather, guests can dine outdoors in the manicured Garden Terraces or at the Captain’s Table whilst watching life in the bay unfold.

PLAY

Teignmouth Golf Club

After a relaxing nights’ sleep in your Beach Hut and a hearty breakfast, the winners can take the short drive to Teignmouth Golf Club, where 18 holes await on a course that was designed by the legendary Dr Alister MacKenzie.
Opened in 1924, some nine years before he completed his most famous work at the Augusta National, Teignmouth boasts a 6,082-yard heathland track offers spectacular views of the sea and nearby moors.
MacKenzie’s signature multi-tiered greens are much in evidence on a course that has changed little since it first opened. The yardage may be modest, but par is a lowly 69 from the whites, and with wind almost a constant factor on this exposed layout, birdies are not always easy to come by, especially on the six par-three holes.

For more details about the Cary Arms & Spa, visit www.caryarms.co.uk or call 01803 327110. For information about Teignmouth Golf Club, visit www.teignmouthgolfclub.co.uk.

THE PRIZE
The prize includes a two-night stay for two people in a beach hut at the Cary Arms, with one dinner with house wine, a daily breakfast, and two 18-hole green fees at Teignmouth Golf Club.

South Coast UK Golf – East Sussex Courses Reviewed…

Here are our views on two South Coast UK golf courses in East Sussex, close to the historic towns of Battle and Hastings.

Every year the TSG Team heads off on a golf trip for a couple of days to discuss the next year’s TSG golf events, and any improvements we can make to the site.

Often this has been to prestigious golf courses in Europe, but in a pandemic year (2021) we thought we would stay closer to home…

Cooden Beach Golf Club - South Coast UK Golf Courses - www.thesocialgolfer.com

Awesome Seaside Course I could play again
and again and again.

  • South Coast UK Golf – Cooden Beach Golf Club

Cooden Beach Golf Club, Cooden Sea Road, Bexhill On Sea, East Sussex, TN39 4TR, United Kingdom

01424 843938

Just back from a fantastic couple of days playing South Coast UK golf courses, where I had the pleasure of playing Cooden Beach Golf Club.

Prior to the trip I had been told that I would enjoy Cooden Beach Golf Club, and I am very pleased to report, this course does not disappoint!

From the moment you arrive, you find a relaxed atmosphere in the Clubhouse and the vistas from the patio seating area give you a superb view of the 18th and first fairways and of what you can expect from the course. Simply stunning.

However, before heading out, I indulged in a superb Fish Finger sandwich which was supposed to be a light snack, but was a complete meal in itself. I was impressed.

Now, if you like links courses then Cooden Beach Golf Club is for you.

Technically, the course is built on marshland but it plays like a links course, and whilst most holes are open, the course does boast some mature trees.

The fairways are spacious, but they are undulating.

The greens are tough, fast in certain directions, and the borrows are a real art to read.

As you get closer to the ‘beach’ from holes eight onwards, although not viewable, you do get the ‘seaside’ feel when you notice the tops of the beach huts and the scenic railway that passes along the coastline, reminding me of my childhood.

Here, again, the views are stunning. There are glimpses of the sea and Beachy Head straddles the skyline but it’s the overall landscape of the course that wins the day.

This is a challenging golf course – 6182 off yellows and 6518 off whites.

The Par 3s are long. Two of them around 180 yards but reachable with the right club.

However, the Par 5s give you a chance, as they are fairly straight.

The long Par 4s are tough – some of them are 430 yards so getting off the tee is crucial with a decent drive.

The stand-out holes for me were the Par 5 9th, and the Par 5 15th.

In short, I fell in love with Cooden Beach Golf Club.

I found the course in beautifully kept condition with a great layout that keeps your attention (whilst also forgiving). Luckily, I found the fairway, more often than not. If you stay straight, you’ll have a great day.

The Clubhouse may be older and of the more traditional style but this is the charm of playing the more established clubs.

The Pro shop was also very friendly and helpful.

If I had any criticism, it would be the cost of a buggy. I thought £30 each was a bit steep but was necessary on a hot day.

Obviously, it helps when you have some of your favourite golfing pals along to encourage you throughout the day.

I always enjoy my rounds with the TSG Team, so I had ideal playing partners to enjoy my South Coast UK golf tour.

Finally, the reception on arrival as a visitor is always telling, and I found everyone had a smile and were all friendly and chatty.

I hope to play Cooden Beach Golf Club again… it’s a Sussex star!

Sedlescombe Golf Club - South Coast UK Golf Courses - www.thesocialgolfer.com

Pretty mature parkland course, that will keep you coming back for more

  • South Coast UK Golf – Sedlescombe Golf Club

Sedlescombe Golf Club, Kent Street, Sedlescombe, Sussex, TN33 0SD, United Kingdom

01424 871700

Playing for the first time at Sedlescombe Golf Club, based in the area of Battle and Hastings, there is no need to tell you this is an area of some historic importance not to mention great beauty.

On arrival, you can see this is a busy golf course.

A brand new modern Clubhouse greets you with a large patio area (that wouldn’t be out of place in Spain) with table service, friendly staff and a great mixed menu.

Visiting in the middle of the British summer, you can never really predict either the weather or your game. But having read only good things about this course, I was excited to see what this club (now under new management) was going to be like.

Now I’ll get my excuses out of the way straight away.

Sedlescombe Golf Club played host to the PGA Sussex Championship the week before our visit, so the rough had been grown up and the greens top-dressed, so I wasn’t expecting to play to my handicap and I was right.

This is a course that you need to study, learn and think about. If you like to blast a driver down every fairway, forget it. At Sedlescombe, you require patience and accuracy.

Having played another local seaside course the day before, what a contrast this would prove to be.

This course is a mature, dense, and beautiful parkland course and there is not a sound to be heard except the larks and the cuckoos.

On speaking with members, some of whom referred to the course as ‘Ditch-combe’, I would advise buying a course planner if you’re playing here for the first time.

With tight tree-lined fairways, and in places some very small greens, this is a course I could play again and again and again. It is my kind of course.

Every hole is different. Some elevated tees, some sunken greens, some very reachable Par 4s and some seriously testing Par 5s. Oh, and plenty of water. Yep, this course just about has it all.

The stand-out holes for me were the 337 yard 8th and the 232 yard 10th, but I’ll also mention the dog-leg 15th to a tiny hidden green, surrounded by tall trees. If you make this in two, you are a good golfer.

If I had any issues with the course (and I am nit-picking now), the rough needs another cut now the PGA’s have gone and I would say the greens could be a little better.

However, judging by the number of works going on around the course, this is something they are already working on.

I have no doubt that this will be the leading course in the area within a few years.

Membership is very reasonably priced at only £900 pa. Very affordable when compared with some of the more established clubs in the region.

There is a hotel on site too, so you have the option of completely immersing yourself in golf for a few days without leaving the venue.

Lastly, the club also offers a great driving range on-site for those wanting to practice before their round.

Inside the Clubhouse, the changing rooms are modern and clean with all the amenities you would expect including good disabled facilities.

In summary, I REALLY liked this course.

It’s clear the new owners (who have also had to battle with COVID) have the ambition to make this one of the best South Coast UK golf courses, providing a relaxed ‘inclusive’ atmosphere and I am already looking forward to returning soon!

South East golfers go the distance with Arccos – Golf News https://golfingagency.com/south-east-golfers-go-the-distance-with-arccos-golf-news/ https://golfingagency.com/south-east-golfers-go-the-distance-with-arccos-golf-news/#respond Sat, 10 Sep 2022 18:23:38 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022/09/10/south-east-golfers-go-the-distance-with-arccos-golf-news/

Golfers using the the Arccos shot tracking system were most likely to be found playing golf courses around London and the South East so far this year, according to data revealed by the company.

The Addington Golf Club in Croydon is the venue with the most rounds tracked by Arccos in England so far this year

Courses located in the southern part of the country dominated the ‘Most Played’ rankings for golfers playing in Britain, with Arccos Smart Sensors between January and June this year, with five of the top 10 courses located in Surrey alone.

Leading the way was the scenic heathland course at The Addington Golf Club in Croydon – just ten miles from central London – where a total of 318 rounds were played using Arccos Smart Sensors to detect each shot – equating to over 50 rounds each month or 12 rounds per week.

Dating back to 1913 and designed by J.F Abercromby, who also created Worplesdon, the par 69, 6300-yard course is in the middle of a full restoration project under the guidance of world-renowned architects Mike Clayton, Mike DeVries and Frank Pont (CDP). The 230-yard par 3 13th and 515-yard par 5 16th  are the best of many memorable, challenging, and spectacular holes with expansive views of the capital city from its hilltop tees.

“It’s great that so many of our members and visitors are using Arccos Caddie data to understand and improve their game and I’m looking to utilise the system more within my own coaching sessions,” said Phil Womack, Head Professional at The Addington Club.

Foxhills Club & Resort in Chertsey accounted for places 2 and 5 in the top-10 Arccos usage ratings, with both championship parkland courses – the Bernard Hunt (293) and Longcross (275) – proving popular with tech-orientated golfers.

Knole Park Golf Club the Kent (279) squeezed into third spot, with two other Surrey courses at Hampton Court Palace Golf Club (277) and the Hoebridge Golf Centre in Old Woking (261) completing the top six.

Also making a strong start to the year with market-leading Arccos Caddie members were three more locations in Kent – Pedham Place Golf Centre (247), Newbury & Crookham Golf Club (244) and the Cave Hotel & Golf Resort in Faversham (244) – plus the Skylark Golf & Country Club (232) in Hampshire.

Notable courses to feature in the top 50 included Cotswold Hills, The Oxfordshire, Bearwood Lakes, Gog Magog, Celtic Manor, Royal North Devon, The Grove, Formby Hall, The Goodwood Club, Royal Blackheath, Burhill, Sunningdale, Silvermere and Royal Mid-Surrey.

“This course location data over the first six months of the year demonstrates just how committed our British Arccos Caddie members are in pursuit of game improvement, particularly those in London and the southeast region,” said Andrew Turner, Vice President of Sales at Arccos Golf. “We’re now able to extract data from our dataset more easily and have plans to introduce a host of game enhancing insights that will help all golfers take their game from guessing to knowing.”

Recent Arccos innovations include Gen3+ Smart Sensors and the Link Gen 2 wearable device, plus Enhanced Putting Stats that provides amateur players with putting data previously the preserve of elite Tour players.

Arccos Caddie automatically tracks your shots while delivering in-round insights and personalised Strokes Gained analytics for every game aspect. The system is highlighted by an A.I.-powered rangefinder, smart club distances and caddie advice for every golf hole. These innovations helped new Arccos Caddie members who played at least 10 rounds lower their handicap index by an average of 5.78 strokes in 2021.

Arccos members have now recorded more than 550 million shots during 11.5 million rounds in 162 countries. This feeds the world’s largest on-course dataset, now including over 350 billion individual data points, which powers Arccos’ industry-leading Strokes Gained engine that allows a player to select their personal handicap goal, then provides personalised analysis for every game aspect and each club in the bag.
