Mackenzie Hughes rose above his own consistency to win the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship in a two-hole playoff with a walk-off birdie against Sepp Straka. Hughes gutted out a 69 in regulation that concluded with a nasty up and down at the 72nd hole to get into the playoff, which he punctuated with an early fist pump that proved to be accurate. The victory, Hughes’ second on the Tour, ends a drought of 155 professional starts between wins. 

When I say Hughes rose above his own consistency, here is what I mean: The Canadian is your prototypically average PGA Tour player. He makes a lot of cuts, notches a lot of top 30s and top 40s, but he rarely wins because he rarely has those standard deviation weeks needed to win on the PGA Tour. Interestingly, he had one of those last year when he gained 12 strokes (a borderline winning number at a lot of events) at the RSM Classic but failed to capitalize.

That wasn’t the case this time around. Hughes took advantage of some terrific tee-to-green play (he finished first in the field this week in strokes gained from tee to green) and closed out a victory that had been so elusive. 

“I kept telling myself the whole week that I was going to do it,” Hughes said. “That was the only thing I saw in my mind. Those par saves down the stretch, just trying to will the ball in the hole. I’d say that describes my game a bit is that grit and perseverance. The second one felt harder than the first one, that’s for sure.”

The par saves were pretty incredible. The one on the 72nd hole was difficult, but he had an up and down from a greenside bunker on the first hole of the playoff that was just as delectable.

Hughes almost never finishes outside the top 75 in the FedEx Cup, but just as infrequently finishes in the top 25. He’s just a solid player who rarely tastes victory. There are a lot of those guys on the PGA Tour, but Hughes seems more bent on winning than most. It’s not as taxing to simply exist as an average PGA Tour player, but Hughes should be applauded for doing what so few seem to want to do: putting himself in contention to win and hitting the shots (and putts) to actually pull it off.

The man he defeated, Straka, has now lost two playoffs in his last four PGA Tour starts. He was terrific all week — he shot all four rounds in the 60s — and could be poised for a breakout year. The oily-swinging Austrian looks exactly like somebody who is going to have a career year that culminates in a 3-0-1 record at next year’s Ryder Cup in Rome right before Luke Donald pours his beloved Diet Coke from the Ryder Cup straight into the back of Straka’s throat.

We’re getting ahead of ourselves, though. This was event No. 2 of 47 for the PGA Tour season, and while it lacked the chaotic ending of the first one — when Danny Willett kicked away a winning opportunity to Max Homa — it still provided some good context for the rest of the season. Straka, as a breakout European, and Hughes as somebody who, as some would say given that football season is fully underway, might have that dog in him. Grade (for both): A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship.

Mark Hubbard (T5): It was not a Sunday to remember for Hubbard, who was the 54-hole leader. He shot 2-over par in the final round — the only player in the top 12 to shoot over par at all — and couldn’t cash in the healthy lead he built up over the first three days. Hubbard is an especially easy player to root for, and it’s always fun to have him in contention. Unfortunately, he just didn’t have his best stuff when having it would have resulted in his first-ever PGA Tour victory. Grade: A-

Davis Riley (T19): After the first day, I thought we might get a Sam Burns redux, with Riley kick-starting his season with an early win and some whispers about whether he could make next year’s United States Ryder Cup team. Instead, he faded over the last three days with rounds of 71-70-71. Riley struggled immensely off the tee. not normally a weakness of his — and the result was that he let a group of players who were looking up at him after 18 holes overtake him over the final 54. Grade: B

Sam Burns (T30): Burns was the highest-ranked player in the field this week, so his T30 has to be a disappointment — especially coming off a strong Presidents Cup week and at a golf course where he won just a year ago. Burns was awesome off the tee, but he struggled elsewhere and couldn’t find his iron game (he finished second in approach shots a year ago and 49th this week). This says nothing about his long-term ability or what I expect from him this season, but it’s likely not the start to the season he envisioned. Grade: B-

The third round of the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship is in the books, and one man has separated himself from the pack as he tries to secure what would be his first PGA Tour win in just the second event of the 2022-23 season.

Mark Hubbard shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday to run out to a one-stroke lead over Mackenzie Hughes and three (or more) on the rest of a really interesting top of this leaderboard. That sets the stage for what should be an intriguing Sunday at the Country Club of Jackson as Hubbard tries to close out a life-changing 18 holes, while a host of other players attempt to upend his bid to do so.

Let’s take a look at what happened in Round 3 of the Sanderson and look ahead to the final day.

The leader

1. Mark Hubbard (-15)

The fall was made for players like Hubbard. The 188th-ranked player in the world is trying to work his way into the majors, along with the big-time events next spring and summer. A win this week would go a long way to making next August’s Tour Championship, too. Hubbard has been terrific this week — first from tee to green and first in approach shots — and he’s trying to improve on a best-ever finish at the 2019 Houston Open, where he T2 behind Lanto Griffin.

Hubbard is one of the fascinating characters on Tour — his dream foursome is E. Harvie Ward, Walter Hagen and Yohann Benson, and his favorite book is “Ready Player One” — and he’s certainly going to be a fan (and probably Twitter) favorite come Sunday’s final round.

Incredibly, Hubbard might be more surprised than anyone about his position. 

“I had last week off,” he said. “My daughter got my sick, and then accidentally knocked off a kitchen knife off the counter and stabbed me in the foot, so I had a hole in my foot this whole week, and I didn’t get to practice at all last week, so I was just kind of coming here trying to get ready for Vegas to be honest.

“I think that probably has a lot to do with expectations being low. That being said, I felt incredible about my game for the last six, seven months, so I’m just kind of trying to go with it and keep those expectations low and just try and hit good golf shots.”

Hughes is interesting because he was among the best players on the PGA Tour last season who didn’t win a golf tournament. He’s playing solid golf again this week and is second in the field from tee to green behind Hubbard. Hughes has won before and won’t be afraid of the moment (if it comes). He’s probably the player, along with Hardy, I’m most interested in following on Sunday as Hubbard tries to pull away.

Sunday scaries?

The top of this board is not the most accomplished on the PGA Tour when it comes to winning; Bradley leads the way with four PGA Tour victories. There are likely going to be some shaky hands and a few gasps for air when things get tight late. That will make the golf even more compelling than it would be on a Sunday, and it should provide the Sanderson with a great finish between a lot of intriguing players.

Thomas Detry signed for a second consecutive 5-under 67 to earn a share of the lead of the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship heading into the weekend. A PGA Tour rookie in name only, Detry sits at 10 under alongside Mackenzie Hughes who fired a 9-under 63 on Friday to push his name back into contention.

Securing some status on the PGA Tour late last summer courtesy of a T4 finish at the Boise Open in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, Detry has been in the midst of quality golf for quite some time. His success in Idaho was on the heels of a top-10 finish at the Scottish Open and followed by a top-five result at the DP World Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship.

Since taking his talents to the PGA Tour, Detry has kicked off his rookie season without a hitch in spite of his extensive travel schedule. The 29-year-old impressed at the Fortinet Championship with a T12 result and looks well on his way to improving on his efforts in Napa.

Playing in Europe the past six seasons, Detry is inexplicably without a professional victory since his Challenge Tour days in 2016. Experiencing a number of close calls, perhaps the change of scenery, location and tour will allow him to finally enter the winner’s circle. 

Hoping this is not the case are a number of his chasers including his co-leader Hughes. Reigning Honda Classic champion Sepp Straka also appears to be up for the challenge as he arrived in Jackson, Mississippi, fresh off a scorching hot FedEx Cup Playoffs. The Austrian is alone in third and a couple strokes ahead of hometown hero Davis Riley who grabbed a share of the first-round lead and now stands at 7 under after a so-so second round.

The leaders

1. Thomas Detry and Mackenzie Hughes (-10):

More than 150 starts removed from his lone victory on the PGA Tour, Hughes is positioned perfectly at the halfway point to end this winless drought. The Canadian experienced a middling 2021-22 season that featured only three top-10 finishes, and after missing out on the Presidents Cup in his own neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina, the motivation to play well has never been higher with sights on the 2024 competition in his home country.

“Yeah, I watched [the Presidents Cup]. I had some family in town that week, so we didn’t make it out, but I watched and was keeping tabs on the boys and pulling like heck for them to pull it out,” Hughes said. “It was motivating for sure. I wanted to be there really badly, and it was something I had kind of marked on my calendar for the last year and a half. Once I knew it was coming to Charlotte, that was — I wanted to be on that team. It hurt, but that’s the way it goes in this game sometimes. I’ll work hard to be on that team in two years in Montreal.”

3. Sepp Straka (-9)

T4. Mark Hubbard, Garrick Higgo, Scott Stallings (-8)

T7. Davis Riley, Nick Hardy, Stephan Jaeger (-7)

Mississippi’s Riley is still in this tournament after 36 holes. After commanding a share of the first-round lead with a 6-under 66, Riley stalled on Friday with a 1-under 71. Describing this week as “one of the worst driving weeks I’ve had so far in a long time,” the local kid has gotten the job done in spite of the big stick. More than capable of wielding this club effectively, if able to right the wrongs from the first two days over the weekend, Riley will have a real chance to nab his first victory on the PGA Tour in his own backyard.

“It would mean the world to have a chance to win this golf tournament,” Riley said. “But like I was saying (Thursday), there’s a lot of work to be done. Yeah, the game is in a good spot. I didn’t score and do things quite as well as I did (Thursday), but I’m still doing a lot of things good. I just need to take a tweak or two here or there and get ready to go again (Saturday).”

Grillo early contender for reaction of the season

Only six rounds into the 2022-23, Emiliano Grillo may already have the best reaction to any shot this season. Channeling his inner Hideki Matsuyama or even Mark Hubbard at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the Argentinian was disgusted with his tee shot on the par-3 13th. 

In lieu of the casual club drop, Grillo went a step further and flung his club into the high grass only for his ball to settle 11 feet from the pin. While his birdie effort ultimately slid by, Grillo signed for a bogey-free 7-under 65 and sits four strokes off the lead.

Is it too early to look ahead to the 2023 Ryder Cup?

My CBS Sports colleague Kyle Porter pegged first-round leader Riley as a potential future Ryder Cup participant and I can’t help but look ahead to Rome next fall. Instead of discussing the U.S. side, it is the backend of the European Team which I find extremely intriguing and could make or break its efforts to recapture the cup.

Both Detry and Straka should have a realistic opportunity to garner a selection from Captain Luke Donald if they continue to play in this manner for the foreseeable future. While hardly on the minds of the Europeans as they head into the weekend in Jackson with a chance to win, I am sure somewhere Donald is taking notes.

The easy pick is Burns who sits at 5 under and only five strokes back despite losing more than two strokes on the greens through the first two rounds. Ranking second in strokes gained tee-to-green, conventional wisdom suggests a putter like Burns should be able to figure things out moving forward. 

Personally, I love Straka ‘s chances to raise his second trophy in less than a year, but the number is a smidge short for my taste. If not interested in either Straka or Burns, rookie Taylor Montgomery (-4) at 60-1 is a worthwhile option.

The PGA Tour returns following a terrific Presidents Cup with a fun Sanderson Farms Championship to kick-start the rest of the last fall as we know it for the foreseeable future. The tournament in Jackson, Mississippi, has become a fun fall staple — the type of throwback PGA Tour event that doesn’t really define the Tour anymore but provides a great launching pad for young talent and a nice landing spot for old stalwarts.

Sam Burns, fresh off his first Team USA event, rolled in as the defending champion and he played nicely on the first day at the Country Club of Jackson. However, he still trails the leaders — and there are a lot of them — after 18 holes.

Let’s take a look at his round as well as who else is in the hunt this week.

The leaders

T1. Davis Riley, Will Gordon (-6)

Riley is somebody who has been talked about as a potential future Presidents Cup or even Ryder Cup participant, and perhaps this is the beginning of that march toward Rome next year. That sounds ridiculous given the depth the U.S. has, but Riley is a terrific talent, and we often see 3-5 players drop off year over year on these U.S. teams. 

“I feel like I played really solid,” Riley said. “I feel like it was hard to get really, really close to a lot of pins just because the greens were rolling out, the wind up there. It’s hard to have a ton of opportunities, but yeah, I felt like I had a really solid day. The way I was playing, I feel like if I just kept going on, I would be pretty close to up there. To keep it stress-free was really nice.”

One thing to keep an eye on is that though Riley hit it well, he also rode a really hot putter in Round 1 (5th in the field) to that 6-under score. He has the tee-to-green chops to back it up, but it’s worth considering as we roll into the next three rounds.

Other contenders

T3. Andrew Putnam, Brandon Matthews, Kevin Yu, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Mark Hubbard, Thomas Detry, Trevor Cone (-5)

T10. Nick Taylor, Kevin Roy, Russell Knox, S.H. Kim (-4)

Keep an eye on Matthews. He got married on Saturday and joked that his wife always dreamed of honeymooning in Jackson. He’s one of the longest good players in the world off the tee, and he gained nearly three strokes from tee to green Thursday. Matthews winning this week would be a great feel good story.

“I consider myself one of the luckiest guys in the world to be able to do this for a living because I love it so much,” Matthews said. “To have fun over the next three days, not put a ton of pressure on myself and just go out and enjoy it.”

Burns returns

A three-time winner a year ago, Burns is easily the class of this field, and he played well enough with a 2-under 70 on Thursday to stay in the top three of the betting odds (see below). The good news for Burns a week after he hit a bevy of long putts to help the U.S. to its win at Quail Hollow is that he didn’t putt well at all and has a lot of room for improvement (and perhaps a second straight win here) over the next three days. 

“This tournament means a lot to me, like you said,” Burns said. “It’s close to home, and I enjoy coming back here. I look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces this week. I’ve gotten to know a lot of the Sanderson Farms family really well, and it’s been great coming back here. I’m excited for the next few days.”

Riley is compelling as a winner but not necessarily at this number. Bezuidenhout, on the other hand, is an interesting pick given that he’s coming off a successful Presidents Cup and led this field from tee to green Thursday. Burns, too, is a nice number, given his firepower and how poorly he putted (105th in the field) on Thursday. Those are the two guys that I would be on ahead of Riley.

Sam Burns will try to defend his title when he participates in the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship, which begins on Thursday, Sept. 29. Burns closed as the favorite last year, and he is the 11-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship odds. Three of the last four winners at the Country Club of Jackson have ranked inside the top-10 in driving distance, which could be a factor to consider when making your 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship bets. 

Burns is followed by J.T. Poston (16-1), Denny McCarthy (18-1), Sahith Theegala (20-1) and Russell Henley (22-1) on the PGA odds board. Theegala held either the outright lead or was a co-leader after each of the first three rounds of this event last year, but he wound up finishing in eighth place. This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Top 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship predictions 

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship: Denny McCarthy, one of the top favorites at 18-1, stumbles this week and doesn’t even crack the top-five. McCarthy is coming off an impressive season on the PGA Tour, recording five top-10 finishes, which includes a T-7 showing at the U.S. Open in June. However, the 29-year-old struggled down the stretch, missing the cut in three of his last six events. 

In addition, McCarthy was extremely inconsistent with his approach shots last season, ranking 131st in greens in regulation percentage (65.33%) and strokes gained: approach the green (-.059), which doesn’t bode well for his chances to win this week. He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Sanderson Farms Championship 2022 field.

Another surprise: Taylor Montgomery, a 35-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. Montgomery has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. He was a consistent golfer on the Korn Ferry Tour last season, and he carded a top-15 at the Farmers Insurance Open. Montgomery is coming off a strong showing at the Fortinet Championship, finishing in third place at 13-under-par.

He currently leads the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting, which bodes well for his chances of contending this weekend. Montgomery also ranks third in strokes gained: total, which is why his odds continue to shrink in each tournament that he plays in. Another first-time PGA Tour winner could be in the cards in Jackson, Miss. this week when the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship tees off. The tournament, long known as the Magnolia Classic, moved to the Country Club of Jackson in 2014, and six of eight winners there were first-time PGA Tour champions. They include Sebastian Munoz (2019) Ryan Armour (2017), Cody Gribble (2016), Peter Malnati (2015) and Nick Taylor (2014). All will be part of the field teeing off Thursday, with Cameron Champ (2018) the only one taking the week off. Sam Burns, who went 22 under par last year, also is scheduled to tee off this week. Burns’ victory sparked a season that included three PGA Tour victories and a fifth-place FedEx Cup ranking entering the Tour Championship (he finished 24th). Top PGA Tour rookies Davis Riley and Sahith Theegala aim for their first tour wins this week as part of the Sanderson Farms 2022 field. Fresh off an electric Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club, the PGA Tour returns to Jackson, Mississippi, for the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship. Defending champion and Presidents Cup participant Sam Burns headlines the field as he looks to get his 2022-23 campaign off on the right foot after notching three victories a season ago.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout, a member of the international team, will also make the short trip from Charlotte to Jackson. The South African should be brimming with confidence as he searches for his first victory on the PGA Tour after garnering a 1-0-1 record at the Presidents Cup. The Country Club of Jackson, which has been kind to first-time winners in recent history, could be an ideal landing spot. Six of the last eight champions at the Sanderson Farms Championship have been first timers, with Sebastian Munoz being the last in 2019. 

This is welcomed news not only for Bezuidenhout, but also for the stable of recent Korn Ferry Tour graduates looking to make a splash on the PGA Tour. Taylor Montgomery, Davis Thompson and Ben An are coming off of top-10 finishes at the 2022 Foritnet Championship and primed to improve on their efforts in Napa.

Coming off his Presidents Cup debut, Sam Burns aims to repeat as champion at the 2022 Sanderson Farms Championship this week in Jackson, Miss. The 26-year-old set the course tournament record with a 22-under 266 at the Sanderson Farms Championship last fall. It was the first of his three victories last season. He comes off a frustrating Presidents Cup where he went 0-3-2, but his inclusion on the victorious United States team should still put him in a positive frame of mind. Also teeing off Thursday are several 2021-22 PGA Tour winners, including Keegan Bradley, J.T. Poston and Seamus Power, and Tour Championship qualifiers Sahith Theegala and Scott Stallings. This is the ninth edition of the event at the Country Club of Jackson, and six of the eight Sanderson Farms winners on the course were first-time PGA Tour champions.
