With 2022 coming to a close, there are innumerable options available for the golfer in your life. Clubs, shoes, clothes, hats and books. It’s all a bit overwhelming.

We’re going to highlight a few intriguing options for this year’s holiday season through the new year. Some are appropriate based on the season, while others are just a bunch of fun.

Let’s take a look at some of the products available as 2022 moves into 2023.

Holderness & Bourne Ward sweater ($175 | Holderness & Bourne): This is my favorite sweater Holderness and Bourne makes. It’s incredibly versatile — I wore it to a wedding last weekend but have worn it on the golf course as well — as well as extraordinarily comfortable. Full send on pretty much all H&B sweaters (full disclosure: author is outfitted by Holderness & Bourne).

H&B

Prime Putt putting mat ($299 | Prime Putt): There are two things I love about this putting mat. The first is the quality of the turf. Prime Putt calls it “Tour-grade turf” and that’s the right way to describe it. Even when you put it on carpet, the ball rolls so well. The other is how easy it is to roll up and store. I’ve tried other putting mats that were a nightmare to keep in the home, and this one is the opposite of that. My kids cannot stop putting on it.

Prime Putt

Ralph Lauren cashmere hooded sweater ($330 | Ralph Lauren): This is one of the more expensive products I’ve ever included in this gift guide, but I also cannot stop wearing this hoodie. It’s as comfortable as material gets and looks great in any and all environments. Light but warm, sharp but casual, the Ralph Lauren cashmere hooded sweater is a tremendous golf product.

Ralph Lauren

TRUE All Day Ripstop ($220 | TRUE): I have yet to try a TRUE product I didn’t enjoy. These golf shoes are no different. They were “crafted to keep you moving comfortably when you opt outside while simultaneously leaving a light footprint on the planet,” and I think TRUE accomplished that goal here. Again, my favorite thing about TRUE is how versatile its products are. The shoes don’t look out of place when you wear them off the golf course and into a cofee shop or on a date. One shoe to rule them all, and TRUE is making a run at that.

TRUE

Swiftwick Flite XT Zero Tab socks ($20 | Swiftwick): I’m always in need of better socks, and these Swiftwicks are a really solid product. They’re light but not too light (I don’t want to feel like I don’t have any socks on at all), and it’s easy to envision them lasting years and years. Swiftwick says they are good for fitness, running, golf and racket sports, and I’m sure that’s true but I enjoy them just as much for lounging around the house.

Swiftwick

Seamus yardage book cover ($95 | Seamus): The Seamus products are all of the highest quality, and this yardage book cover is no different. Though Seamus makes a variety of yardage book and scorecard holders, the leather versions are certainly my favorite.

Seamus

PGA Tour 2K23 (Price varies): The latest edition of PGA Tour from 2K offers more options than ever before. Whether entering MyCareer mode for an authentic PGA Tour experience, creating your own dream courses or competing in TopGolf activities, playing golf on a console has never been better. There are more controls and options than ever before, and you can even start from scratch with MyPlayer, which has new archetypes and skills along with licensed gear and apparel. You can even buy a bundle with NBA 2K23.

8 Best Putting Mats That’ll Make You a Better Putter [2022] https://golfingagency.com/8-best-putting-mats-thatll-make-you-a-better-putter-2022/ Sun, 13 Nov 2022 00:45:25 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/8-best-putting-mats-thatll-make-you-a-better-putter-2022/
8 Best Putting Mats That’ll Make You a Better Putter [2022]

Your short game is where you gain or lose strokes. That’s why you should be spending as much time working on it as you do your long game.

In this post, I reveal the best putting mats to help you practice your stroke from home.

You’ll find that the options on this list include simple, narrow putting mats and broader premium designs with various cups to aim at. In addition, you’ll see that most of these putting mats are easy to roll up and store away or transport when you go on vacation.

1. Boburn Golf Mat – Best Overall Putting Mat

Top pick

BOBURN Golf Putting Green

BOBURN Golf Putting Green

True-roll surface simulates real green conditions with a similar stimp meter reading. Soft high-elastic base that helps it to adhere on any surface that you place it on indoors or outdoors.

Check Price on Amazon

Dimensions

Pros

  • 6 holes to aim at
  • Optimal durability
  • Produces a true-roll
  • Remains stable while conducting your putting drills
  • You can set it up inside or outdoors

Cons

  • Premium price tag
  • It takes time to get the wrinkle out when you first open it

The Boburn golf putting mat is my best overall putting practice mat, thanks to its quality, size, and quantity of cups to aim at. Although it carries a premium price tag, I feel it is well worth the money because it gives the closest feel to an actual putting green you can find.

At 5 x 10 feet, the high-quality Boburn mat is constructed from heavy-duty materials to offer superior durability. Besides its durability, you’ll find that the soft-elastic surface and slip-resistant rubber-backing keeps the green stable while you putt.

Furthermore, I enjoyed the speed consistency of these greens and that the True-roll surface simulated the conditions of an authentic green on a golf course. Besides my balls roll, I appreciated the six flagsticks to aim at, which is rare for a personal putting surface.

Finally, you can set the Boburn golf putting mat up inside or outdoors and practice most comfortably. However, you will need patience when rolling it out, as it will contain creases. I found that applying some weight to these areas overnight straightened them out.

2. Thorza Indoor Putting Mat – Best Budget Putting Mat

Budget friendly

Thorza Indoor Golf Putting Mat

Dimensions

Pros

  • Affordable putting mat
  • Easily portable
  • It comes with a carry bag and putting cup
  • Features distance markings along the mat
  • Ideal for indoor use

Cons

  • It does not include any cut-out holes
  • The surface is too similar to a carpet rather than a putting green

The Thorza indoor putting mat offers golfers an affordable setup, easy storage, and hassle-free portability. In addition, I felt the carry bag and the putting cup were a nice touch for an entry-level golf putting mat.

You’ll notice that this mat stretches 10 feet long and is only 1.65 feet wide, leaving little room for error. Besides boosting your accuracy on the golf course, Thorza added markers to help you optimize your distance control from 1 to 7 feet from the cup.

Moreover, I found that the mat remained in place, for the most part, thanks to its non-slip rubber underside. I would avoid consistently walking on it, as this cause it to slide out of place.

The biggest downside is that the mat does not contain cut-out holes for your golf balls to drop into. However, Thorza made up for it with a putting cup. Finally, I felt the surface was thicker than usual, leading to a slower roll, but at this price point, I cannot complain.

3. Perfect Practice Putting Mat – Best Automatic Ball Return System

PERFECT PRACTICE Putting Mat

Dimensions

Pros

  • Automatically returns your ball to you after each putt
  • Quality velvet material
  • Features distance markers and lines to the cup
  • Portable
  • Includes 2 holes

Cons

  • Expensive
  • It takes a while to flatten the mat after unboxing it.

A tedious part of putting practice is collecting your golf balls at the end of your set. Fortunately, the Perfect Practice putting mat solves this with an automatic ball return system that shoots your ionomer back to you after every stroke.

I feel it allows me to stay in the zone for an extended period instead of breaking my concentration every few seconds to fetch a ball. You’ll see that this putting mat stretches 9.6 feet long and 15 inches wide to help you master close-range putts.

The putting mat of choice for Dustin Johnson features distance markers and lines to aid your roll to the cup. On the topic of cups, it is equipped with two to aim at. One is smaller to increase your challenge, while the other is regulation size.

Finally, the Perfect Practice putting green delivers a clean roll, and I found it is easy to pack up to transport between the office and home. My only gripe is its premium price tag, but the quality of the product is well worth the spend.

4. TrueBirdie Indoor Putting Green – Best For Distance Control Practice

TrueBirdie Indoor Putting Green and Golf Mat

Dimensions

Pros

  • Moderately affordable
  • Excellent for distance control training
  • Practical travel bag to carry the mat
  • Non-slip backing
  • Easy to store

Cons

  • It does not feature any cut-out holes
  • It is not equipped with slope pads, leading to monotonous putts

Feel is an integral part of your putting stroke, and understanding how hard to strike each putt results in greater distance control. The TrueBirdie indoor putting greens feature distance markers from 1 to 8 feet from the cup, allowing you to work on specific lengths.

I find this knowledge is easily transferable to the links, and I have a better feel for how many feet I am from the cup. This 10-foot by 16-inch putting mat also demands straight putts to stay on the surface.

You’ll spot 3 putting targets on the mat, but none are cut out, which could bleak some golfers out. TrueBirdie made amends by adding a moveable silicone golf cup to place on the hole targets.

I also applaud the ease of portability thanks to the nifty draw-string travel back and found it easy to roll up. Lastly, the non-slip backing holds effectively as long as you avoid walking on it frequently.

5. TrueBirdie XL – Best For Mid Handicappers

TrueBirdie XL Indoor Golf Putting Green

Dimensions

Pros

  • The green includes 2 flagsticks
  • A removable backstop prevents golf balls from running wild
  • You can create a slope for an extra challenge
  • The broader design lets you putt it from different angles
  • Quality turf material

Cons

  • Moderately expensive
  • It would be nice if the slope was more elevated

In my experience, the TrueBirdie XL offers the perfect practice putting mat for mid-handicappers. It provides excellent value for money, allowing golfers to putt from different angles and throw in the challenge of a slope.

You’ll see that the TrueBirdie XL putting green extends to 10.5 feet and is an impressive 3 feet wide. The added width allows you to putt from different positions and challenge yourself to a new line.

Besides putting from different angles, this putting mat offers golfers the luxury of adding a slope to the equation. TrueBirdie included a foam-shaped wedge that elevates the position of the flagsticks and demands precise distance control.

In addition, I enjoy the presence of 2 removable flag-sticks for two reasons. Firstly, you have two targets to aim at, and secondly, you can putt more balls before you need to clear out the cup. Finally, I also approve of the backstop behind the cup, as it stopped my golf balls from rolling all over the house.

6. Putt-A-Bout Par Three Plus – Best Office Putting Mat

PUTT-A-BOUT Par Three Plus

Dimensions

Pros

  • Affordable for a quality surface
  • 3-hole cut-outs to aim at
  • 2 hazard cut out to increase the challenge
  • You can putt it from multiple angles
  • Easy to roll up and store

Cons

  • The mat does not contain any actual holes
  • Rolling it up too tightly creates creases that are difficult to eradicate

If you are looking for the best indoor putting green to kit out your office, consider the Putt-A-Bout Par Three Plus. It is a simple kidney-shaped mat with 3 cut-out holes and 2 cut-out hazards to add an extra obstacle.

Besides the 2 cut-out hazards, which are broader on the Plus version than others, the 9-foot by 3-foot mat offers the added challenge of various angles. You can use this to your advantage when working on your putting skills and mastering a variety of lines.

Furthermore, I welcomed the flat green-like putting surface, which produced a consistent roll during practice. In addition, the non-skid backing did well to keep the mat grounded throughout.

Finally, the Putt-A-Bout Par Three Plus putting mat is easy to roll up and store whenever you need to hide the evidence of your training exercises.

7. Pinstripe Golf Putting Mat – Best Portable Putting Mat

Pinstripe Golf Indoor Putting Green

Dimensions

Pros

  • Simple to fold up
  • It includes a swing path trainer template to boost accurate strokes
  • Master start lines show you the way to the cup
  • It comes with a carry bag for hassle-free portability
  • It remains stable while practicing

Cons

  • There are no actual holes
  • It is expensive for indoor putting mats with no ramps

In the age of the digital nomad, you need to travel light and remain practical. Luckily, you don’t have to leave your golf training aids behind. The 7.87-foot by 1.64-foot mat is easy to fold and slide into the complimentary travel bag.

Besides its ease of transport, this putting mat features alignment aids to help you keep your putter head square at impact for accurate putts. Plus, you’ll find a line running down the center of the mat to help you keep your ball on target toward the cup.

Furthermore, this mat does not contain cut-out holes for your ball to drop into but includes a cup. I like the design because it requires you to send your ball at least 18-inches past for the cup to swallow it. You’ll find this promotes confident putts when you are out on the golf course.

I felt it was a nice touch to offer this mat in three different colors, giving the option of green, red and blue. Finally, a ball-blocking aim board prevents your balls from rolling all over the place, as a greaseless rubber bottom keeps them in place during practice.

8. SKLZ Accelerator Pro – Best Putting Mat For For Accurate Strokes

SKLZ Accelerator Pro with Ball Return

Dimensions

Pros

  • It helps golfers produce straighter putts
  • The hole at the top of the slope adds an additional challenge
  • Affordable
  • You can use it indoors or outside
  • Quality materials used on the surface for the price

Cons

  • The ball got stuck in the automatic returner on occasion
  • If you putt it from either side of the alignment markers, the lines are erratic.

My final recommendation for the best putting mats is the SKLZ Accelerator Pro. In my experience, it offered the best platform to work on minimizing putter face twists during your stroke to keep the face square at impact.

The 9-foot by 16.25-inch mat features squaring and alignment lines at 3, 5, and 7 feet from the cup. Watch the putter path on your backstroke and follow through to ensure it remains on plane throughout. Over time it will become second nature to produce straighter strokes.

In addition, they equipped this putting mat with a hole at the top of the ramp. You’ll find this demands precise distance control to drain putts. Once your ball drops into the cup, it is remitted to the sender by the automatic ball returner.

Finally, I admired the quality of the surface as it was as close to actual grass as you can get on an affordable putting mat.

5 Tips to Improve Your Putting Stance and Sink More Birdies https://golfingagency.com/5-tips-to-improve-your-putting-stance-and-sink-more-birdies/ Sun, 06 Nov 2022 01:48:14 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/5-tips-to-improve-your-putting-stance-and-sink-more-birdies/
5 Tips to Improve Your Putting Stance and Sink More Birdies

Have you ever heard of the immensely popular golf phrase, “You drive for show, but you putt for dough”? That’s because over 40% of your strokes during a round are with the putter! Sadly, lots of golfers never seem to get around to practicing their putting and this costs them dearly on their scorecards.

When I first started playing golf, my PGA teaching professional told me that phrase quite often. He did this to remind me to spend just as much time on the putting practice green as I did on the driving range, if not more. Once I started heeding his advice, my overall golf game improved rapidly.

Is your putting stance keeping you from shooting your lowest score ever? Here are some quick tips to help you improve your putting stance. These are some simple things to remember when you are practicing at the putting green.

1. Find the Proper Stance Width

Two keys to hitting great putts are having balance and stability. In order to maximize balance and stability, spread your feet out slightly wider than your shoulders during your set-up. The best way to do this is to stand with your feet at shoulder-width apart, then move each foot one to two inches away from each other.

Why do we want a wide stance when putting? Not only will you stay more balanced throughout your putt, but a wide stance will help limit your head movement. Any type of head movement before or during your putt will decrease your accuracy.

How wide of a stance is too wide? Well, you never want to feel uncomfortable while putting. If your stance is putting unnecessary stress on your back, hips, or knees, consider standing a little bit more narrow. The ideal putting stance is wide enough to maintain balance but narrow enough to keep you comfortable.

2. Practice the Perfect Ball Position

To sink more birdie putts, you have to make sure you position the ball properly in your stance. The perfect position for the golf ball is right in the center of your stance. This will put you in the ideal position for sinking more birdies and eagles.

It may help to picture an imaginary line right in the middle of your stance. That’s exactly where you want the ball. Keeping the ball right in the middle of your stance will ensure that the golf ball is aligned right between your eyes. The most talented putters in the game keep their eyes directly over the ball.

When you line up with the ball in the center, you ensure that you’ll make contact with the ball at the bottom of your swing arc. This will get the ball started with the necessary amount of speed. Speed is the most important factor to having more success on the putting green.

If you play the ball too far towards your back foot, you’ll often hit the ball with too much force and it’ll run by the hole. If you play the ball too much toward your front foot, you’ll catch the ball at the end of your putting stroke and it likely won’t have enough speed to get to the hole. Obviously, neither one of these results are what we’re looking for on the putting green.

3. Aim for a 50/50 Weight Distribution

When working on your putting posture, aim to keep your weight equally distributed. This means you want the same amount of weight on each leg. This will lead to better balance, increased stability, and less head movement.

If you put too much weight on either leg, it will change your swing path and decrease your consistency. If you have too much weight on your right foot, the bottom of your swing arc moves too far back. If too much weight is on the left foot, the opposite is true.

Remember, we never want the swing arc to change. Try your best to maintain that perfect 50/50 balance throughout your entire stroke. Your scorecard will thank you for doing so!

4. Don’t Forget to Practice Your Putting Grip

We’ve discussed in great detail how important your grip is when making normal golf swings. Having the proper grip is also crucial to reaching your full potential with the flat stick! Here’s a quick drill you can perform to make sure your grip is correct.

  • Let your arms hang naturally out in front of your body
  • Hold the putter shaft with both of your palms facing each other
  • Practice hitting a few putts while making sure that the back of both your right hand and left hand are following through with a straight line toward your target

Also, make sure your grip pressure is correct. Just as with your normal golf swing, you never want to grip the shaft too tight. If you can see white on either of your thumbnails, your grip is too tight. Loosen up and don’t choke your putter.

5. Check Your Alignment

Having the proper alignment is critical to putting success. If your alignment is off by the slightest of margins, you’ll find yourself pulling or pushing putts just outside the hole. Work on keeping the shoulders square towards your intended line.

The best way to make sure your shoulders stay square at impact is to putt cross-handed. Lots of players on the PGA Tour employ this method when they’re in the midst of a putting slump. If you’re right-handed, simply practice some putts with your left hand lower than your right hand on the shaft. (If you’re a leftie, it’s obviously the other way around)

It may feel a bit weird at first so it’ll take some time to get used to the feel of it. Once you feel more confident in your alignment, you can always go back to your normal putting stroke with your left hand on top.

What is a Cross Handed Putting Grip and Is It Effective? https://golfingagency.com/what-is-a-cross-handed-putting-grip-and-is-it-effective/ Sun, 06 Nov 2022 00:43:48 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/what-is-a-cross-handed-putting-grip-and-is-it-effective/
What is a Cross Handed Putting Grip and Is It Effective?

One of my favorite golfers is Rickie Fowler because of his dynamic putting ability and his positive attitude.

I remember watching a PGA Tour tournament on TV and noticing that Fowler was putting with his left hand lower than his right hand (cross-handed). When one of the announcers asked him about it, Fowler mentioned that the cross-handed grip helped him regain his feel when he was in the midst of a slump on the putting green.

If you play golf, you’ve probably heard of a crossed-hands putting method or grip.

But does this method work? We explore the effectiveness of this popular putting grip here.

What is a Cross Handed Putting Grip?

A cross-handed putting grip is often used by golfers who want to improve their putting accuracy or pace.

Do you know how the standard putting grip involves keeping your right hand below your left (for a right-handed golfer)? When using the cross-handed technique, the left hand is the low hand on the putter’s shaft instead of the right hand.

Though the cross-handed grip doesn’t get much publicity, it has been helping golfers regain their putting feel for several decades. Jordan Spieth, Billy Horschel, and Kevin Chappell are PGA Tour stars who are big fans of the cross-handed putting grip.

Other veteran PGA Tour stars like Bernhard Langer and Vijay Singh have employed the cross-handed grip at different points in their respective careers.

Benefits of Using a Cross Handed Putting Grip

There are many benefits to using a cross-handed putting grip

If you are struggling on the greens and hitting way too many three-putts, the cross-handed grip may be just the key to getting your flat stick back on track! Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of trying out the cross-handed grip.

1. Improves Shoulder Alignment

Most right-handed golfers have open shoulders. This means that the right shoulder sticks out just a bit further than the left shoulder.

This can make lining up your putts much tougher. It can also make keeping your shoulders square throughout the putting stroke more difficult.

When you move to a cross-handed putting grip, this naturally squares up your shoulders. Most golfers love that by using the left-hand low technique, they no longer have to worry about their shoulders flying open during the putt.

This leads to more solid contact with the ball in the impact zone.

2. Better Control of the Putter

Control means everything on the green. The cross-handed grip enables the golfer to feel the putter’s clubhead more easily.

This leads to more precise accuracy, especially on those long lag putts that are always tricky.

The cross hand grip also leads to more control of the putter face. This helps the golfer to putt with the proper speed.

Controlling the speed of your putts will lead to lower scores and a more enjoyable time on the course!

3. Reduces Hand Movement

Remember how Jack Nicklaus said that the “hands are the swing wreckers”? That statement is also true for putting.

Too much wrist involvement can send your putt flying way past the hole and possibly off the green altogether (OUCH!).

When using the cross-handed putting grip, the wrists’ involvement in the putting stroke becomes limited. This is a great thing because it leads to a more consistent putting stroke.

As we all know, consistency is a huge factor in playing better golf.

Other Common Putting Grips

Reverse Overlap Putting Grip

The most popular putting grip in the game of golf is the reverse overlap grip. The reverse overlap grip involves placing your left index finger over your right pinkie finger while putting.

This is very similar to the Vardon golf grip for a regular golf swing. Lots of golfers prefer this putting grip because it allows them to have both of their thumbs on the putter’s shaft together.

Two Fingers Down Grip

Other folks opt to point their right index finger down the side of the shaft. This is the most common variation of the reverse overlap grip.

Some golfers prefer to point both of their index fingers down the shaft of the putter. This is known as the Two Fingers Down Grip.

Claw Grip

The claw grip is another common type of putting grip. With the claw grip, the left hand stays in the same position as the reverse overlap grip.

The right-hand remains lower on the club but makes a claw shape.

The claw grip makes sure that the shaft of the putter stays in the fingers of the right hand. This keeps the dominant hand (right hand) from taking over the stroke.

Some golfers opt to use a long putter when using the claw grip. Big-time PGA Tour stars like Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, and Webb Simpson swear by the claw grip.

Palms Facing Grip

This grip calls for the golfer to putt with their palms facing each other on the club.

Neither hand is lower on the club so this should keep either hand from taking over the stroke. Both thumbs simply rest on each side of the putter’s shaft.

Vijay Singh is a big fan of this grip because it keeps both hands in a neutral position.

This grip certainly works well for Mr. Singh, but many golfers find that they cannot put enough speed on their putts with this type of grip.

What is The Reverse Overlap Putting Grip & Should You Use It? https://golfingagency.com/what-is-the-reverse-overlap-putting-grip-should-you-use-it/ Sat, 05 Nov 2022 05:55:45 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/what-is-the-reverse-overlap-putting-grip-should-you-use-it/
What is The Reverse Overlap Putting Grip & Should You Use It?

Have you ever heard of the reverse overlap putting grip? Though it may sound a bit complicated, the reverse overlap is one of the simplest putting grips in golf. When it comes to putting, the reverse overlap is considered a conventional grip.

The reverse overlap grip has been around a long time and it has become the most popular grip on the PGA Tour. In fact, according to this poll, 68.5% of PGA players on the Top 70 FedEx Cup standings in 2019 used the reverse overlap grip.

This putting grip style is giving some golfers a huge advantage. Find out how it works and if you should use it here. After reading this, you’ll be able to decide if the reverse overlap putting grip will help you shoot lower scores.

What is The Reverse Overlap Putting Grip?

Perhaps you have heard of the famous overlap grip for full golf swings. Do you know how the overlap grip requires you to take your right pinky finger and lap it over your left index finger?

This putting grip works in a similar, albeit opposite fashion. Here’s a quick guide to how to use the reverse overlap putting grip:

  1. Grab the putter shaft with your right hand first
  2. Place the golf club into your right palm and make sure your right thumb points straight down the shaft
  3. Loosely grip the club with the fingers of your right hand
  4. Now place your left hand on the club
  5. Curl your left index finger over your right pinkie finger

reverse overlap putting grip

Why Some Golfers Use This Putting Grip Style

1. More Control of the Clubface

Most golfers love the reverse overlap putting grip because it keeps the putter more in the palms. This gives the golfer much more control of the putter’s clubface.

More control usually leads to more stability and consistency on the greens. All of this adds up to a more confident putting stroke and more birdies on the golfer’s scorecard.

2. Prevents the Hands from Rolling Over

Another big reason golfers prefer the reverse overlap grip is because it helps prevent the hands from rolling over at impact. Golfers who roll their wrists during their putting stroke often struggle with finding the correct ball speed on the greens.

3. Simplicity

Other golfers like the reverse overlap grip because it’s a simple putting technique that has a long history of success. In golf, simplicity means a great deal to both amateurs and professionals alike.

Not only is the reverse overlap easy to learn, most golfers feel it is incredibly comfortable. Comfort means everything, especially on the greens.

4. Grip Pressure

Lots of golfers get super nervous while on the putting green and they end up gripping the putter way too tightly. This makes it more difficult to sink any putt, especially a long one.

The reverse overlap grip makes it easier for the golfer to lighten their grip pressure on their dominant hand. This leads to better accuracy and a more pure stroke.

Pro Golfers Who Use The Reverse Overlap Grip

Tiger Woods

We can’t leave the greatest golfer of all time off this list. Woods has used the traditional reverse overlap grip his entire PGA Tour career.

Woods prefers to lap his left index finger over both his right pinkie and right ring fingers. The 15-time major champion is known as the best clutch putter of all time so the reverse overlap grip has worked exceptionally well for him.

Rory McIlroy

McIlory has been one of the best players on the PGA Tour for quite some time. The 4-time major champion switched to the reverse overlap putting grip back in 2011 and it has served him well.

Shortly after McIlory made the putter grip switch, he won his first major title at the 2011 U.S. Open. The reverse overlap grip allows McIlory to keep his left hand in perfect alignment with his target line. Though it seems as if McIlory has been on Tour forever, he’s still only 32 years old and should be able to win a few more major championships.

Jason Day

Though Day’s putting has declined a bit in recent years because of a whole slew of back injuries, he’s still one of the best putters on Tour. The 12-time PGA Tour winner uses the reverse overlap grip and it helps him keep his grip pressure light on the putter. This grip style also allows Day to keep his left forearm aligned with the putter face.

Day won the 2015 PGA Championship and, if he can stay healthy, should be able to make a run at another major soon. The 34-year old Australian has remarkable touch on the greens and the reverse overlap grip is a big reason for his putting acumen.

Other Common Putting Grips

Have you tried the reverse overlap grip and didn’t like the feel of it? Here are 4 other common putting grips for you to explore. Practice with each grip style to see which one works best for you.

Vardon Grip

The Vardon Grip was made popular by pro golfer Harry Vardon and is also known as the overlapping grip. With the Vardon grip, the right pinkie rests on top of the left forefinger.

Though lots of golfers utilize this grip for a full swing, not as many use it for putting. Many golf instructors feel that the Vardon putting grip allows for too much wrist movement at impact.

Saw Grip

The saw grip is a popular choice for some golfers, but it is considered unconventional. With the saw grip, the left-hand holds the club in a normal, neutral position.

The right hand, however, forms a saw shape with the four fingers. The right thumb grips the underside of the golf club. PGA Tour phenom Collin Morikawa has improved his putting quite a bit since switching to the saw grip.

Claw Grip

The claw grip is similar to the saw grip, so much so that some folks use the terms interchangeably. With the claw grip, the left hand is also neutral. PGA Tour stars like Justin Rose, Tony Finau, and Tommy Fleetwood use the claw grip.

The right-hand forms a cupped claw, but the right forefinger points straight down the shaft instead of across the shaft like with the saw grip. Lots of golfers who have struggled with the yips have found relief by using the claw grip.

Cross-Handed Grip

The cross-handed grip is also known as the left-hand low grip by lots of folks in golf. PGA Tour golfers like Rickie Fowler use the cross-handed grip whenever they are in the midst of an awful putting slump. Fowler claims the cross-handed grip helps him get back to basics and helps him regain his feel on the greens.

As its name implies, the hands swap positions when using the cross-handed grip. With the non-dominant (left) hand lower on the golf club, the golfer’s shoulders are more likely to stay aligned properly throughout the entire putting stroke. Jack Nicklaus never used the left-hand low putting grip, but he famously said he wished he would have learned to do so during his epic pro golf career.

What is The Left Hand Low Putting Grip & Its Benefits?

I’ll never forget the first time I saw PGA Tour phenom Jordan Spieth putt.

I was watching a golf tournament on TV and said out loud, “Spieth is putting the wrong way”. That was the first time I had ever seen the left-hand low putting grip and it worked very well for Spieth that day.

Some golfers swear by the left-hand low putting grip. Find out what it is and how it can help improve your golf game here. After reading this you’ll be able to decide if this unconventional putting technique is worth trying on the course.

What is The Left Hand Low Putting Grip?

As its name implies, the left-hand low putting grip requires the golfer’s left hand to be the lowest one on the putter shaft. This grip is considered non-traditional because standard putting grips require right-handed golfers to have their right hand in the lowest position on the putter grip.

left hand low putting grip

When using the left-hand low putting grip, there are two main options as far as how the right hand and left hand fit together on the golf club. Most golfers prefer to take their left pinky finger and lay it on top of their right index finger. This is the most common method of employing the left-hand low technique.

The other option is to point the right forefinger straight down the side of the handle. This is how PGA Tour pro Jim Furyk employs the left-hand low grip and it has paid huge dividends for him during his career. No matter what option you choose, make sure that both of your thumbs sit on top of the putter grip for maximum control of the putter head.

The Benefits of Using This Putting Grip

The left-hand low putting grip may look a bit odd, but there are a ton of benefits to using it. Here are some of the biggest advantages of putting this way.

Better Alignment

Lots of golfers struggle with their alignment on the greens. When using a traditional putting grip, it’s easy to have open shoulders when lining up your putts. This can lead to putts being pulled to the left (for a right-handed golfer).

A main advantage of the left-hand low grip is that it automatically forces the golfer’s left shoulder to square up with the right shoulder. This improves the golfer’s putting stance right from the start, without him even having to think about it. A better setup on the green can lead to more birdies!

Limits Hand and Wrist Action

A putting stroke that is too ‘handsy’ has a lot of disadvantages. Unfortunately, lots of golfers rely too heavily on their hands and wrists when putting. This often leads to poor putting speed and a lack of accuracy.

The left-hand low putting grip helps take the hands and wrists out of the putting stroke. This forces the bigger muscles like the hips, shoulders, and arms to control the entire stroke. When this happens, the golfer will notice that their putting technique is more reliable and consistent.

Easier to Stay on the Target Line

Putting sounds easy enough. After all, the golfer is simply trying to take the putter straight back and straight through the target line. As with several things in golf, the concept is simple but the execution isn’t easy.

Some golfers struggle with their dominant hand taking over the putting stroke. When this happens, the putter face is either pushed or pulled off the target line. This results in a ton of frustration with the flat stick.

The left-hand low technique takes the golfer’s dominant hand out of the putting stroke to a certain degree. With the nondominant (left) hand in more control of the club, it’s easier to stay on the target line.

Pro Golfers Who Use The Left Hand Low Putting Grip

Wondering if any pros actually use this putting technique? Here’s the list…

Jordan Spieth

Spieth is the most famous left-hand low putter on the PGA Tour. The three-time major champion consistently ranks as one of the best putters in the game. This proves that the left-hand low technique can provide high-level results, even for top-tier pro golfers.

An interesting thing about Spieth is that he is naturally left-handed, even though he plays golf right-handed. This may explain why he chooses to use the left-hand low grip.

Kevin Chappell

Chappell is another PGA Tour player who loves the left-hand low (lhl) putting grip. The 35-year old has won once on the PGA Tour and once on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Chappel’s putting grip is of the left-hand low variety but he adds a twist to it. Chappell almost makes a claw with his left hand and then cups it over both the putter and his right hand. This would be uncomfortable to most golfers but it works exceptionally well for Chappell.

Billy Horschel

Horschel is a big fan of the left-hand low putting grip and it has served him well. The 35-year old Florida alum has won 6 PGA Tour events and he also won the 2014 FedEx Cup.

Horschel employs the left-hand low technique because it keeps his wrists from breaking down during the putting stroke. Horschel prefers an oversized putter handle, which may help him make the best use of his left hand low grip.

Other Common Putting Grips

Vardon Grip

The Vardon Grip (aka the overlapping grip) is the most common in golf for full swings. Not many golfers use it while putting though. With the Vardon Grip, the right pinky rests on top of the left index finger.

Reverse Overlap Grip

The reverse overlap grip is considered the conventional way to putt. This grip is basically a reversal of the Vardon Grip. The left index finger sits on top of the right pinky with the reverse overlap grip.

Claw Grip

The claw grip has been around the game of golf for several decades. With the claw grip, the right hand is still the lower hand. However, the golfer forms a claw shape with the right hand to keep it from overpowering the putting stroke.

Saw Grip

The saw grip is very similar to the claw grip. The only major difference is that instead of the fingers pointing straight down the shaft, the fingers point horizontally towards the target line. This makes it look like the fingers are trying to saw through the putter’s handle.

Cross-Handed

The cross-handed grip is another term for the left-hand low putting grip. However, the cross-handed term can be used for both right-handed and left-handed golfers. With the cross-handed grip, the golfer simply switches the positions of his hands on the putter.

Where Should You Position The Ball When You’re Putting? https://golfingagency.com/where-should-you-position-the-ball-when-youre-putting/ https://golfingagency.com/where-should-you-position-the-ball-when-youre-putting/#respond Fri, 04 Nov 2022 10:36:09 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/where-should-you-position-the-ball-when-youre-putting/
Where Should You Position The Ball When You’re Putting?

Did you know that putting is the most important part of the game of golf?

Think about it. Most strokes are spent on the putting green than anywhere else on the golf course.

Putting form is an important part of the putting equation. How you position your body to the ball can lead to more efficiency and consistency. Here are a few tips for finding the proper ball position during putting.

Where to Position The Ball When Putting

There are several schools of thought when it comes to finding the ideal place to position the golf ball when putting. Some PGA professionals teach their proteges to always place the ball in the middle of the putting stance. They argue that for maximum putting accuracy, you need to make contact with the golf ball at the bottom arc of your putting stroke.

The other common place of alignment during putting is a little bit forward of the center of your stance. Some teachers claim that catching the ball on the upstroke of the swing path will result in a higher amount of precision and consistency.

Not a lot of golfers believe in placing the golf ball behind the middle of the stance while putting. Choosing to place the ball in this position means that you’ll make contact with the ball before your swing has bottomed out. This will usually result in a descending blow and the wrong amount of ball speed.

What Happens if You Stand Too Far Away From The Golf Ball

One of the fundamentals of putting is to make sure you are standing the proper distance away from the golf ball. For most golfers, it is best to position the golf ball right under your eyes. An easy way to do this is to use your putter’s shaft as a measuring tool.

Standing too far away from the golf ball will often cause you to use an in-to-out swing path. This almost always results in putts that are pushed out to the right of the hole.

Standing too close to the golf ball also causes inaccurate putts. When a golfer stands too close to the ball, it can cause lots of misses to the left of the hole. This is because this type of stance promotes an out-to-in swing path.

When to Change You’re Ball Position in Your Putting Stance

Most amateurs prefer to keep the position of the ball the same in their putting stance regardless of the situation. There is nothing wrong with this line of thinking because it keeps things simple on the greens.

However, some golfers like to change their ball position based on a variety of factors. During the following circumstances, a golfer may want to experiment with a different ball position.

No matter what ball position you choose, remember to always spread your feet out until they are shoulder-width apart. You can change a lot of variables in your putting stroke, but the width of your stance shouldn’t be one of them.

Close to Hole vs. Further Away

Lots of golfers like to change their ball position based on the length of the putt. For short putts, they’ll elect to play the ball a little forward of center.

A lot of folks feel that this strategy keeps them from hitting the ball too hard on short putts. There is nothing more annoying than blasting your ball past the hole on a short five-foot putt! Since this ball placement causes contact on the upstroke, there should be a little less ball speed.

To that same point, some golfers prefer to play the ball from the center of their stance when faced with longer putts. This helps make sure they strike the ball at the low point of their swing plane. This should result in more ball speed than playing the ball a little past the center of the stance.

Incline vs. Decline

Another common situation that may warrant a change in ball position is whether the putt is uphill or downhill. Uphill putts call for an aggressive stroke. After all, when facing an incline you have to make sure that you use enough ball speed to get the ball to the hole.

When looking at an uphill putt, opt to play the ball in the center of your stance. This will ensure that you get enough oomph on the putt.

Downhill putts are an entirely different animal. These types of putts with a severe decline slope are incredibly difficult, even for golfers on the PGA Tour.

The best ball position to choose for downhill putts is one that is slightly past the center of your stance. You may even want to go an inch or two more toward your front foot for these types of putts. This will help you strike the golf ball with just enough tempo.

The goal with downhill putts is to not smack the ball way past the hole. Try your best to avoid a three-putt at all costs because nothing will wreck a scorecard faster.

A Couple of Putting Tips To Help You Improve on the Greens

1. Pay Attention to Your Grip Pressure

All golfers have to experiment to find the right amount of grip pressure. You never want to choke the putter by gripping it too tightly. This will cause you to have a jabbing type of putting stroke that is wild and inaccurate.

On the other hand, you don’t want to grip the putter too loosely either. Grip the shaft tight enough so that you feel in control of your swing. On a grip pressure scale of 1 to 10, you want to be at about a 4 with both the right hand and the left hand.

2. Practice a Pendulum Stroke When Putting

To make sure you are using the correct amount of tempo while putting, keep your knees bent while practicing a pendulum stroke. To do this, focus on taking the putter’s face straight back during the backswing and straight through on the downswing.

The pendulum stroke will help you keep most of your putts on your target line. When this happens, you’ll start making more birdie putts!

The 8 Best Putting Lasers to Help You Sink More Putts [2022]

Besides reading the line and judging the speed, I have found beginners and high handicaps struggle with alignment.

It doesn’t matter how well you read a line or judge the pace. If you are aiming off line, your putts stand no chance. This article seeks to rectify that by introducing you to the best putting laser aids to sink more putts.

I’ve compiled a combination of affordable, mid-range, and premium options to cater to all players. Whether you are a beginner on a limited budget or a high-rolling lower handicapper, this list gives you options.

Budget Laser Target Line Putting Aids

1. SWTM Golf Putter Sight Pointer

The SWTM is the most affordable laser putter aid to achieve the perfect aim. It is a simple, portable design that attaches to your shaft and shines down on the ball at address. The laser helps you identify and keep your putter path consistent during your backstroke and follow through.

Apart from keeping your putter head on line during your stroke, it ensures your face is aiming along the correct line. That helps you send your ball off on the proposed start line for added accuracy.

Given the lightweight construction of this putter laser, it also attaches to other clubs. However, it’s best set-up to improve your short game. Its affordable price point suits beginners and casual golfers on a budget.

2. Foretra Golf Putter Plane Laser Pointer

The Foretra is an adjustable putter laser pointer aid that helps you aim at the desired target. Subsequently, it allows you to see if your clubhead remains on the path during your stroke for a square impact point of the putter.

Furthermore, the adjustable pointer helps you align the laser with your ball for added accuracy.

Finally, this laser pointer is highly affordable and portable, allowing you to attach it to other clubs and practice wherever you have a putting mat or green.

3. Peyan Golf Laser Sight Pointer

This golf laser sight pointer features a similar construction to other affordable designs. Its sole purpose is to help you master your putting alignment.

An adjustable pointer allows you to calibrate the laser for improved accuracy, while a lightweight construction means it can attach to any putter.

Mid-Range Laser Putter Aids

4. The Smart Golfer LPAS Smart Laser Putting Alignment

The Smart Golfer LPAS attaches to your putter face and exhibits the correct vision line of the clubface. It instantly demonstrates when the face of the putter is aiming along the incorrect line. On long putts with multiple breaks and speeds, pick a point nearer to you to set up on target.

A button that attaches to your grip connects to the laser pointer. That means a wire runs up your shaft, which may be distracting. Whenever you wish to deploy the laser, press the button to see where your clubface is aiming.

One complaint I have is that the product looks cheap and the light sometimes struggles to prevail in bright conditions. However, it does what it needs to and helps you improve your aim.

5. ProActive Sports

This laser putter is a great product to assist you with aligning your putter face with the target. Plus, it allows you to determine whether your putter head remains on plane during your backstroke and follow through.

Employing this laser with solid line projection improves your aim to ensure that you start your ball on the desired target line. That helps you improve your accuracy on the green for more consistency on long and short putts.

The rechargeable device attaches to your shaft, and the laser reflects onto your target line and putter head. Therefore, it is portable, and you can use it on your indoor putting mat or the practice green.

6. Perfect Practice Golf Laser Glasses

Perfect Practice glasses take the individual golfer one step further into the future. Thanks to their laser module glasses. Instead of attaching a laser to your club, you wear it. These frames train your head and eyes to remain above the ball at address.

It helps you follow the line of your putter and ball from your backstroke through impact. Considering that Dustin Johnson uses these glasses, one may suggest that it forms part of the equipment of the serious golfer types.

Premium Putting Laser Systems

7. Mark-Tech Rechargeable Green Laser Putter

The Mark-Tech rechargeable green laser putt is a high-performing product with rechargeable batteries and a powerful green laser. It is easy to set up and requires no calibration, unlike products that attach to your shaft.

This laser aid shines brightly on your target, providing great visuals for a true assessment of your clubface position. You can see where your clubface is pointing throughout your stroke. That helps you identify and make adjustments to your stroke for improved results on the green.

This device offers an accurate aim kit to eradicate silly alignment errors that can cause you to miss makeable short putts.

An issue one may have is the added weight the device gives your putter. That could lead to inconsistencies in your distance control on the course. You may leave putts short when it is not attached to your putter because you usually do not need to hit the ball with as much force.

8. Greenon Laser Coach Putting

The final putting laser aid on this list is the most expensive. It performs multiple functions, such as pointing you along your target line and exposing the angle of your putter face at impact. In addition, it guides you to master the distance control of your putts for fewer three-putts.

Besides giving you the perfect line, this laser putter aid provides visualization training to help you understand where your putter face needs to reach at impact. As a result, you will pay more attention to getting your face square for improved accuracy.

Finally, it features a powerful green laser for optimal visuals and is rechargeable to avoid frequently purchasing batteries.

Related: Familiarize yourself with effective putting drills. That will give purpose to your practice session and boost the impact of your laser training aid.

7 Tips to Improve Your Putting Stroke to Sink More Birdies

Amateurs I speak to spend insane amounts of time worrying about the tiniest equipment specifications. Mostly, their aim is to maximize distance. However, these same players struggle around the green and neglect their short game. That is why I have compiled 7 tips to help your putting stroke.

I will explain how your golf ball, grip, and hosel influence the accuracy and distance control of putts. But, more importantly, I have compiled tips to help you improve your putting stroke. If you can dial your performance with the flat stick, you will start to consistently shave strokes off your handicap.

You should also learn about the 8 best putting drills to card more birdies. These exercises will increase your consistency on the dancefloor for fewer 3-putts and more birdies.

What is a Putting Stroke?

In simple terms, a putting stroke is your swing with a flat stick. It refers to when you take your putter head back and through to connect the golf ball.

There are 3 predominant putting strokes, including the straight, straight-arc, and arc. The straight stroke occurs when players take the putter head away on a straight line and follow the same path through to the ball.

The second putting stroke is often displayed by PGA Tour professionals. This is a straight-arc stroke. As the same suggests, players induce a combination of straight back and arc motions for a square face at impact.

Finally, an arc stroke occurs when golfers produce increased face twisting between takeaway and impact.

It is vital to understand what putting stroke you have to identify the correct putter specs. Otherwise, you will experience inaccuracy and erratic distance control on the green.

Does The Ball You Use Matter for Putting?

The ball you use does not matter for the average golfer. I say that because you probably do not strike it consistently in the center of the clubface for it to impact your result. However, GolfWorks shows how the position of your ball at set-up can influence the direction that it rolls off the putter face:

GolfWorks explains that when the weight of the ball is positioned to the left or right, it veers off in that direction. When weight is positioned upwards, it produces a purer roll to remain on its target line.

Now, if you strike the ball off-center, it will miss on the left or right-hand side of the cup. Even the weight of the ball is facing up. That is where the majority of us average golfers sit.

7 Tips to Improve Your Putting Stroke

1. Hosel Selection

The first step to optimizing your putting stroke is to select a putter with the correct hosel for your stroke. Once you know what stroke you have, you can identify the ideal hosel to increase stability and limit face rotation.

Golfers with a straight back and through putting technique tend to excel with a double bend hosel. This shaft construction helps balance the club face, keeping it square through impact. Another option for straight strokes is a center shaft, which is also face-balanced.

Conversely, players with an arc putter path are better equipped for a short hosel. It also works for those who work their wrists excessively during the stroke. These hostels create toe hang in the face, which mitigates face rotation to square it up through impact.

Furthermore, a plumber’s neck is built for those with a slight arc and straight swing path. These putters feature some toe-hang to get your face square for a straighter shot.

2. Shaft Length

The next step is to consider the length of your putter shaft. Employ a posture where you are completely in control of your stroke. Some players find that bending over and getting their eyes directly over the ball is the best way to ensure the correct alignment. A standard 34 or 33-inch shaft may do the trick in this instance.

However, taller golfers who prefer to stand more upright at address may opt for a 35-inch shaft. The length of your shaft impacts the angle that your face strikes the ball through impact. If it is too long for your setup you may struggle to square up the putter face in time for contact.

On the other hand, a short shaft might lead to a closed face at impact, resulting in putts missing to the left of the cup.

3. Putter Grip Setup

Try a few different putting grips to find the one that produces the best control and feel. One option is the claw grip. Tommy Fleetwood is an excellent claw putting stroke teacher. He provides a simple explanation of the technique in the below video, but I will touch on the basics:

Effectively, your grip locks between your thumb and index finger on your strongest hand. That means right hand for right-handers and left for left hand golfers. This boosts the stability of the club and limits face rotation.

Another option that I use on the practice green is left-hand low and right-hand above. As a right-hander, it reduces my ability to move the wrists. Therefore, it keeps the face straight through the stroke.

My actual setup is the conventional grip. I keep the hands connected to encourage the palms to work together. It feels more comfortable for me and provides optimal feedback. Unfortunately, it can cause my wrists to rotate during the stroke.

4. Strike The Ball On The Up

For optimal distance control and accuracy, your ball must roll purely. This can only be achieved if you connect the ball cleanly. I see many amateurs stab at the ball instead of stroking it. This leads to them striking the ball on a downward trajectory limiting the topspin the low lofted club produces.

Therefore, you should work on striking the ball a moment after the low point of your stroke. PGA coach Todd Kolb recommends an effective drill that requires no fancy training aid. Place a Sharpie 6 to 8-inches behind your ball and stroke away. If you strike the sharpie on your follow-through, it highlights that you are bringing it down too early in the stroke:

5. Gate Drill

To become a great putter, you need to master accuracy. This starts by understanding alignment and reading the slope of the green. Once you know how to read your line, the next step is to keep your ball on the target line for the entire putt.

For optimal accuracy, your clubface needs to remain square through impact. You can work on this by placing your ball between 2 tees and a further 2 3-inches ahead of that. This setup prompts your ball to start on the desired line and roll to the cup.

Alternatively, you can find a friendly device online or at your local golf retail store. One option is the PuttOut Putting Trainer.

6. Follow The Line

This is an easy exercise that you can work on to boost your stroke path consistency. In addition, it improves your rhythm and tempo. Use a ruler or another golf club and practice taking your putter back and forward along the line. You can even use the grout in your tiles as a guideline.

If you prefer the presence of a proper alignment aid, think about the Kingtop Putting Alignment Mirror.

7. Distance Control Practice

Amateurs tend to struggle with distance control, especially on startling longer putts. This tip is simple. When you practice your skills with the flat stick, pick a spot on the other side of the green. Putt 10 to 20 balls to the point, and see how many you get within a 2-foot radius.

Then work it back by picking a spot in the middle of the green, and finally, one within 10-feet of you. This drill helps you understand how hard to strike the ball for each distance.
