The Sony Open 2023 is set to tee off on Thursday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii. The long-standing tournament is a follow up to the first elevated PGA Tour event of season in last week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions. Seven of the top 25 golfers in the world are in the 2023 Sony Open field, headlined by Tom Kim, Jordan Spieth,  Hideki Matsuyama, and Sungjae Im. Im is listed as the 10-1 betting favorite in the latest 2023 Sony Open odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Other top contenders in the field include Kim (11-1), Spieth (14-1), Matsuyama (15-1), Brian Harman (16-1), and Russell Henley (18-1).

Which players should you target when building your Sony Open prop bet betting strategy? And which sleepers should you target for a potentially huge payday? Before locking in any Sony Open 2023 picks of your own, be sure to check out the PGA predictions and betting advice from SportsLine golf expert Mike McClure.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up over $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model predicted Jon Rahm (+800) to finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions. The model also included J.T. Poston in its best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet hit at +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $1,100. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scottie Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Jon Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has set his sights on the 2023 Sony Open field and just revealed his top PGA prop bets. You can head to SportsLine now to see all of McClure’s 2023 Sony Open prop picks, sleepers, head-to-head matchups, best bets, and his top one and done pick.

Top 2023 Sony Open prop picks

One of McClure’s favorite prop bets this week for the Sentry Tournament of Champions is world No. 30 Tom Hoge finishing in the top-20 of the final leaderboard at +125 odds. Hoge notched his first career PGA Tour victory at the 2022 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, edging Jordan Spieth by two strokes, and has been climbing in the Official World Golf Ranking ever since.

For the 2022-23 PGA Tour season, Hoge has five top-25 finishes, three top-10’s, and is coming off a third place finish last week against an elite field at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. He enters the Sony Open ranked first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained on approach (1.640) and eighth in total strokes gained (1.811), which suggest he should perform well at Waialae Country Club. You can see the rest of McClure’s Sony Open prop bet picks at SportsLine.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions 2023 is set to tee off on Thursday at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Maui, Hawaii. The event serves as the first PGA Tour event of the calendar year, and will feature 17 of the top 20 golfers in the latest Official World Golf Rankings. The only way to earn an invitation is to win in the previous year or to have qualified for the Tour Championship at East Lake in August. Jon Rahm is listed as the 8-1 betting favorite in the latest 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Other top contenders in the Sentry TOC field include Scottie Scheffler (10-1), Xander Schauffele (10-1), Justin Thomas (10-1) and Patrick Cantlay (12-1).

Which players should you target when building your Sentry Tournament of Champions prop bet betting strategy? And which sleepers should you target for a potentially huge payday? Top 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions prop picks

One of McClure’s favorite prop bets this week for the Sentry Tournament of Champions is world No. 12 Tony Finau finishing in the top-10 of the final leaderboard at +105 odds. Finau was playing some outstanding golf before the December break, winning the Cadence Bank Houston Open and finishing in seventh place at the Hero World Challenge.

Finau enters this week ranked first on the PGA Tour in total strokes gained (4.661), second in strokes gained putting (1.984), third in strokes gained tee-to-green (2.677), and fifth in strokes gained off the tee (1.061) and on approach (1.325). If the 33-year-old plays at the same level he was at prior to the break, he will likely be in contention until the end. 2022 Hero World Challenge picks, predictions, best bets, odds, props: Top rated PGA expert says back Jon Rahm https://golfingagency.com/2022-hero-world-challenge-picks-predictions-best-bets-odds-props-top-rated-pga-expert-says-back-jon-rahm/ Wed, 30 Nov 2022 17:52:58 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022-hero-world-challenge-picks-predictions-best-bets-odds-props-top-rated-pga-expert-says-back-jon-rahm/

Tiger Woods was supposed to be the headliner, and he’ll still be on site, but players like Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler will be the focus at the 2022 Hero World Challenge. Woods was expected to return to the course for the first time since The Open in June, but a flare-up of plantar fasciitis forced him to pull out Monday. His event at Albany Golf Club in The Bahamas benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation, and six of the world’s top 10 golfers will compete starting Thursday. Rahm and Scheffler will be joined by fellow major champions like Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa. Viktor Hovland also will be in the Hero World Challenge 2022 field to defend his title. He shot 6-under 66 in the final round last year at Albany to edge Scheffler by one stroke. Morikawa went into Sunday with a six-stroke lead but ended up in a tie for fifth. Woods still expects to compete in two exhibitions next month – The Match on Dec. 10 and the PNC Championship alongside son Charlie from Dec. 17-18.

Rahm, who won this tournament in his debut in 2018 and was the 2019 runner-up, is the 5-1 favorite in the latest 2022 Hero World Challenge odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Scheffler (8-1), Finau (9-1) and Xander Schauffele (10-1) also are expected to be top contenders in the Hero World Challenge 2022 field. Hovland (12-1), Thomas (12-1) and Fitzpatrick (14-1) are among more than a dozen golfers priced shorter than 20-1. Before locking in any 2022 Hero World Challenge picks or golf bets, you need to see the PGA Tour predictions, best bets and sleeper picks from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

McDonald is having a profitable 2022-23 season in every category, and he nailed this month’s Houston Open, backing Finau at 25-1. The expert has been on the money on his matchup plays and cashed in huge on Brendan Steele (80-1) as the first-round leader at the Zozo Championship. Anyone who followed McDonald’s advice has cashed in huge.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Hero World Challenge field and is locking in his best bets, best value and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Hero World Challenge expert picks

In one shocking pick, McDonald is fading Sam Burns (16-1) despite the 26-year-old’s performance in his debut and throughout last season. Burns won three tournaments in 2021-22, and he tied for third in his first appearance at Albany last year. But the last we saw him was at the Houston Open, where he withdrew after a first-round 77. He hit four of 13 fairways and six of 18 greens there, and his ball-striking has been off for a while now. “Burns hasn’t been the same since the summer,” McDonald says, and he has finished in the top-10 just once since June.

On the flip side, this is a ball-striker’s course, and there are plenty of great ones in the field, but Rahm is probably the best. He won the DP World Tour Championship two weeks ago, his second European victory since the 2021-22 PGA Tour season ended. He has finished in the top in two other tournaments since then, and the world’s fifth-ranked golfers seems primed to make a run at a return to No. 1. The Spaniard led the tour in strokes gained off the tee last season and was third in greens in regulation. He hasn’t played at Albany since he was the runner-up in 2019. See who else to pick at the Hero World Challenge here.

How to make 2022 Hero World Challenge golf picks

Before this week’s PGA Tour event at Albany, McDonald has locked in his best bets for the 2022 Hero World Challenge. He is targeting an overlooked star to win who brings excellent value given his course history. The expert says this golfer is the best in the field in terms of strokes gained and should continue to excel on this seaside course. You can only find out who it is, and see the rest of McDonald’s picks and PGA Tour analysis, at SportsLine.

2022 Houston Open picks, predictions, best bets, odds, props: PGA expert says back Tony Finau at Memorial Park https://golfingagency.com/2022-houston-open-picks-predictions-best-bets-odds-props-pga-expert-says-back-tony-finau-at-memorial-park/ Mon, 07 Nov 2022 21:20:33 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022-houston-open-picks-predictions-best-bets-odds-props-pga-expert-says-back-tony-finau-at-memorial-park/

Russell Henley has to be feeling good as he heads to the next stop on the PGA Tour, the 2022 Houston Open, which tees off Thursday at Memorial Park. Henley cruised to a four-stroke victory at last weeks’ World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, and now he comes to a tournament where he has excelled. Henley won the 2017 Houston Open and has finished in the top 10 five times in his nine appearances. He will face a strong Cadence Bank Houston Open 2022 field led by the past two Masters champions – world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler and 2021 winner Hideki Matsuyama. Scheffler has a chance to reclaim the No. 1 ranking with a victory, and he tied for third last week in Mexico. He also held the 54-hole lead at Memorial Park last year before finishing as a runner-up, two strokes behind Jason Kokrak. Among the others in action this week are Tony Finau, Sam Burns and major champions like Jason Day and Justin Rose.

Scheffler is the 11-2 favorite in the latest 2022 Houston Open odds, and Burns (12-1), Finau (16-1) and Aaron Wise (16-1) also are expected to contend. Taylor Montgomery (20-1), Maverick McNealy (20-1), Matsuyama (22-1) and Henley (25-1) are among the other favorites in the Houston Open 2022 field. Before you consider any 2022 Houston Open picks or PGA Tour predictions, you need to check out the best bets and sleepers from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.

McDonald has hit seven of his 11 matchup plays over the past three weeks and is up more than 14 units on those picks this season. At the Bermuda Championship, he backed winner Seamus Power +100 over pre-tournament favorite Denny McCarthy. For the Zozo Championship, he predicted that winner Keegan Bradley would beat Corey Conners, one of the favorites. McDonald also nailed a first-round leader at the Zozo, backing 80-1 Brendan Steele. Anyone who followed McDonald’s advice has cashed in huge.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Houston Open field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Houston Open expert picks

McDonald faded McNealy last week before his top-10 finish, and the expert is still not sold, so he is fading the 27-year-old again. McNealy gained six strokes on the field with his putter in Mexico, and McDonald knows that’s not sustainable. When the putter cools off, “this hot streak will burst in a big way,” the expert says. The California native is fourth in strokes gained putting and was 19th last season. But he also was 122nd in strokes gained on approach and 124th around the green, and he hasn’t been any better this fall. McDonald will find better value elsewhere.

On the other hand, the expert isn’t fazed by Finau’s missed cut last week and expects his well-rounded game to play better in Houston this time. The 33-year-old had a strong showing at the Presidents Cup, going 3-1-0 in the Americans’ victory, and closed last season on a roll. He had back-to-back victories and two other top-10 finishes in his final five events. He finished last season in the top 15 in strokes gained off the tee, approach and tee to green and was 58th in putting. He was fifth in greens in regulation (71.25 percent) and 11th in scoring (69.748). See who else to pick at the Houston Open here.

How to make 2022 Houston Open golf picks

Before this week’s PGA Tour event at Memorial Park, McDonald has locked in his best bets for the 2022 Houston Open. He has several outright plays, including a huge longshot who would bring a monster payout of 200-1. You can only find out who it is, and see the rest of McDonald’s picks and PGA Tour analysis, at SportsLine.

Viktor Hovland will be seeking his third straight title in the PGA Tour event when he tees off Thursday at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. Hovland, ranked No. 11, is one of five players in the top 20 in the World Golf Ranking who are scheduled to compete this week. Reigning Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who dropped to No. 2 in the world behind Rory McIlroy two weeks ago, leads the field in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Hovland and Scheffler will be joined by ninth-ranked Collin Morikawa, 14th-ranked Tony Finau and No. 16 Billy Horschel. Hovland went 20 under par in 2020 at El Camaleon Golf Course to win his second PGA Tour event, then went 23 under last year to win by four strokes. There are six former winners in the field, including Matt Kuchar (2018) and Harris English (2013).

Caesars Sportsbook lists Scheffler as the 9-1 favorite in its latest 2022 World Wide Technology Championship odds. Hovland (11-1), Morikawa (14-1), Finau (18-1), Billy Horschel (18-1) and Aaron Wise (20-1) also are among the favorites in the World Wide Technology Championship 2022 field. Before you make any 2022 World Wide Technology Championship picks or bets, you need to check out the PGA Tour predictions, best bets and sleepers from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

McDonald hit two of his three matchup plays at the Bermuda Championship, including winner Seamus Power +100 over pre-tournament favorite Denny McCarthy. At the Zozo Championship, McDonald nailed a first-round leader, backing 80-1 Brendan Steele, and also hit two of three matchup plays, backing winner Keegan Bradley over Corey Conners, one of the favorites. He is up more than 15 units on matchup wagers this season, and anyone who followed McDonald’s advice cashed in huge.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.

Top 2022 World Wide Technology Championship expert picks

One player McDonald is fading this week is Maverick McNealy, who is high on the odds list but doesn’t deserve to be. In fact, McDonald doesn’t expect the 26-year-old to make the weekend. The former No. 1 amateur doesn’t have a tour victory yet, and while he has posted three straight top-20 finishes, he hasn’t been posting really low scores. That is what he will need to do here, and he has five rounds of 69 or higher in his past eight. “Despite his current quality, there are flaws in his game,” McDonald says, and the expert says he could get in big trouble off the tee.

On the flip side, the flaws in Morikawa’s game shouldn’t be a major problem this week, so McDonald is expecting big things. The PGA and Open champion is excellent from tee to green, and his issues have come the closer he gets to the hole. El Camaleon isn’t terribly tricky on or around the greens, and despite a T-29 finish, Morikawa was sixth in strokes gained tee to green at the CJ Cup. He hasn’t won in almost a year, but he had eight top-10 finishes and was twice a runner-up last season. Mayakoba is “an ideal spot to break his winless drought,” McDonald says. See who else to pick at Mayakoba here.

A handful of the top stars on the PGA Tour are making the trek south of the border to take on El Camaleon Golf Course in the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. The tournament tees off Thursday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and Viktor Hovland returns as a two-time defending champion. The world’s 11th-ranked golfer got his second tour victory at Mayakoba in 2020, then went 23 under to win by four strokes last year. World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler is the highest-ranked player in the World Wide Technology Championship 2022 field, and two-time major champion Collin Morikawa also is scheduled to compete. They will be joined by players like Tony Finau, Billy Horschel and Seamus Power, who won last week’s Bermuda Championship. In addition to Hovland, six other former Mayakoba winners are in the field, including Brendon Todd, Matt Kuchar and Harris English.

The latest 2022 World Wide Technology Championship odds list Scheffler as the 9-1 favorite, with Hovland right behind at 10-1. Five other golfers in the World Wide Technology Championship 2022 field are 20-1 or shorter – Finau (14-1), Billy Horschel (16-1), Aaron Wise (16-1), Maverick McNealy (18-1) and Morikawa (20-1).

One major surprise from McDonald: The expert is fading McNealy, saying “his name simply does not belong in this portion of the odds board.” The former world No. 1 amateur hasn’t recorded a PGA Tour victory yet and finished in the top 10 four times in 27 events last season. He has three straight top-20 finishes in this campaign but hasn’t been scoring particularly low. He is 17 under par over his past two tournaments, shooting 69 or higher in five of eight rounds. McNealy also can get wild off the tee, which will get him into some trouble on El Camaleon.

On the other hand, the expert likes what he sees from Morikawa and thinks this just might be the place to end his victory drought. The PGA and Open champion has gone almost a year without a worldwide victory, but he was in the top 10 eight times, including two runner-up finishes, last season. He hasn’t cracked the top 25 in two events so far this fall, but this course can hide the problems he has in the short game and on the greens. Morikawa was sixth in strokes gained tee to green at the CJ Cup, where he slipped to T-29 with a final-round 72. See who else to pick at Mayakoba here.

The 2022-23 PGA Tour season heads to Port Royal Golf Club this week for the 2022 Bermuda Championship, teeing off Thursday in Southampton, Bermuda. A week after the fall season’s most loaded tournament, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship is a chance for the lesser-known players to grab a huge victory. They will face a short but potentially challenging Port Royal Golf Club course that measures just 6,828 yards but gets most of its protection from Mother Nature. The oceanside track also features notable elevation changes, and the unpredictable weather will determine how low scores can go. Lucas Herbert went 15 under par last year to beat Patrick Reed and Danny Lee by one stroke, but he won’t be on hand to defend. Instead, players like 2021 PGA Tour winners Seamus Power and Garrick Higgo will be looking for another title, and John Daly will be among the fan favorites on a sponsor exemption.

Denny McCarthy (18-1), Mark Hubbard (22-1) and Patrick Rodgers (22-1) are the favorites in the latest 2022 Bermuda Championship odds. Power (25-1), Adrian Meronk (25-1), Aaron Rai (25-1), Thomas Detry (25-1) and Alex Smalley (25-1) are also at the top of the list in the Bermuda Championship 2022 field. Higgo is priced at 55-1, while Daly is a 1000-1 longshot. Before you lock in any 2022 Bermuda Championship picks or predictions, you need to check out the PGA Tour best bets and sleepers from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright picks and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

At this year’s Zozo Championship, McDonald nailed a first-round leader, backing 80-1 Brendan Steele before he closed with four birdies to lead by one stroke after Thursday’s round. The expert also hit two of his three matchup plays there, including tournament winner Keegan Bradley over Corey Conners, one of the pre-tournament favorites. Then last week at the CJ Cup, McDonald was all over defending champion Rory McIlroy, who would go on to win the tournament and defend his title. Anyone who followed McDonald’s golf betting advice has cashed in huge.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Bermuda Championship field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship expert picks

One surprise among McDonald’s picks: The golf insider is fading favorite McCarthy. The expert expects good things from the Maryland native this season, but he hasn’t seen it yet and he doesn’t see value at these odds. McCarthy had five top-10 finishes last season, including a T-7 at the U.S. Open, but he hasn’t come close so far in this campaign. His best is a tie for 25th in four starts, missing the cut in one of those. The 29-year-old doesn’t have a PGA Tour victory, and the putting and excellent work around the green from last season haven’t appeared yet.

On the other hand, McDonald is eyeing another player who doesn’t have a victory in Englishman Callum Tarren. The 32-year-old is one of the longest hitters in this field, averaging 310 yards off the tee, and that will give him an advantage – especially when the wind cranks up. He also has been strong on approach and with his putter, and it is going to take a well-rounded game to win at Port Royal. Tarren has been up and down, missing two cuts but also tying for 13th at the Sanderson Farms in his three starts. McDonald expects him to surge this week. See who else to pick here.

After the biggest event of the fall portion of the PGA Tour season, the grinders and up-and-coming players return to the spotlight at the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Rory McIlroy won the star-studded CJ Cup last week for his 23rd tour victory, regaining the world No. 1 ranking in the process. Now, the likes of Seamus Power, Garrick Higgo and Chad Ramey will be seeking a second tour win starting Thursday at Port Royal Golf Club. Lucas Herbert got his first tour triumph last year, winning the tournament in Southampton, Bermuda at 15 under par. The Australian shot 69 on Sunday to hold off Patrick Reed and Danny Lee by one stroke. Port Royal is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour at just 6,828 yards, but elevation changes and unpredictable weather on the oceanside course can make things interesting. John Daly also is scheduled to compete on a sponsor exemption.

The latest 2022 Bermuda Championship odds list Denny McCarthy as a 14-1 favorite, followed by Adrian Meronk (18-1) and Thomas Detry (18-1). Power (25-1) also is among the favorites along with Mark Hubbard (25-1) in the Bermuda Championship 2022 field. Herbert elected not to return to defend his title.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Bermuda Championship field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship expert picks

Shockingly, McDonald is fading McCarthy, even though he is the favorite and one of the best ball-strikers in the field. But the expert says the 29-year-old hasn’t quite found his form from last season, when he posted five top-10 finishes. He hasn’t finished higher than 25th in four outings this year, missing one cut. McCarthy also hasn’t won on the PGA Tour, and while this might be a good place to post his first victory, McDonald doesn’t like the price in this wide-open field. “Without a victory on the PGA Tour, McCarthy is an easy name to pass over at 14-1,” he says.

On the other hand, the expert is intrigued by Callum Tarren, a big hitter who was tied with Rory McIlroy for second after the first round of this year’s U.S. Open. He went on to tie for 31st, but he had three top-10 finishes last season. He was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard at last year’s Bermuda Championship, so he will have unfinished business. The 32-year-old tied for 13th at the Sanderson Farms but has missed the cut in two other outings so far during this campaign. But the Englishman is in the top 20 in the field in several strokes gained categories. See who else to pick here.

A limited but loaded field is set to tee off Thursday at Congaree Golf Club in the 2022 CJ Cup in South Carolina. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and reigning FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy are among the 15 players ranked in the top 20 who are scheduled to compete. Also among the 78 golfers in the CJ Cup 2022 field are 10 top players from the Korean Tour. The event was originally contested at Nine Bridges in South Korea but has been played in the States since the start of the pandemic. Sungjae Im, a runner-up alongside Scheffler at the Tour Championship at East Lake, is part of that contingent, along with rising star Tom Kim. There are several multiple major champions in the field, including Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Collin Morkiawa. U.S. Open champs Jon Rahm and Matt Fitzpatrick also are among the top contenders in the 2022 CJ Cup field. McIlroy is the defending CJ Cup champion after going 25 under to edge Morikawa by one stroke at The Summit Club in Las Vegas last year.

Caesars Sportsbook lists McIlroy as the 13-2 favorite in its latest 2022 CJ Cup odds, followed by Rahm (9-1), Scheffler (12-1) and Thomas (14-1). They are the clear favorites, with Fitzpatrick (22-1), Im (22-1) and Viktor Hovland (25-1) not too far behind. Spieth (28-1) and Morikawa (30-1) are among the slightly longer shots in the CJ Cup 2022 field, along with young stars like Sam Burns (28-1), Cameron Young (28-1) and Kim (30-1). Before you lock in any 2022 CJ Cup picks or bets, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions, best bets and sleepers from golf insider Patrick McDonald.

At the Zozo Championship, McDonald nailed a first-round leader, backing 80-1 Brendan Steele before he closed with four consecutive birdies to lead by one stroke after Thursday’s round. The expert also hit two of his three matchup plays, including tournament winner Keegan Bradley over Corey Conners, one of the pre-tournament favorites. Anyone who followed McDonald’s advice cashed in huge.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 CJ Cup field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.

Top 2022 CJ Cup expert picks

In a surprise prediction, McDonald is fading Kim, even though the phenom won his second tournament just two weeks ago. The 20-year-old went 24 under at TPC Summerlin to win the Shriners, then went to Japan, where he finished T-25 at the Zozo. That’s a lot of travel, but even if his youth makes that a non-issue, his skills aren’t an ideal fit. Congaree will reward power, and that isn’t part of Kim’s game. He typically averages about 300 yards off the tee and is 192nd in driving distance so far this season at less than 287. He will have a lot of ground to make up.

On the other hand, the expert knows McIlory has power to spare and that the rest of his game has been locked in for months. The 33-year-old is on the brink of regaining the No. 1 ranking for the first time in two years, and he has been in great form since winning the Tour Championship two months ago. He has three straight top-five finishes on the DP World Tour, and his win at The Summit Club and two at Quail Hollow show his affinity for Tom Fazio designs. He was No. 1 in scoring average and second in driving distance last year and could make short work of Congaree. See who else to pick here.

Rory McIroy shows no signs of slowing down as he heads to Congaree Golf Club as the defending champion for this week’s 2022 CJ Cup in South Carolina. The nomadic PGA Tour event, initially intended to be a South Korean staple, was contested at the Summit Club in Las Vegas last year. McIlroy went 25 under to edge a surging Collin Morikawa by one stroke. He went on to win the Tour Championship to close last season, and while this is his first PGA Tour appearance of this campaign, he remains in top form. The Northern Irishman has finished in the top five in all three of his events on the DP World Tour this fall, and he is part of a loaded field teeing off Thursday at Congaree. Six of the world’s top 10 players are scheduled to compete this week. No. 2 McIlroy is joined in that group by top-ranked Scottie Scheffler, two-time CJ Cup winner Justin Thomas, former No. 1 Jon Rahm, two-time major champ Morikawa and U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.

McIlroy is listed as the 13-2 favorite in the latest 2022 CJ Cup odds, with Rahm (9-1) and Scheffler (11-1) not far behind. Thomas (16-1), Max Homa (16-1) and Fitzpatrick (18-1) also are among other top contenders in the CJ Cup 2022 field. Before you lock in any 2022 CJ Cup picks or bets, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions, best bets and sleepers from golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

Top 2022 CJ Cup expert picks

Shockingly, McDonald is fading Tom Kim (28-1) despite the rising young star’s recent success. The South Korean won the Shriners in Las Vegas two weeks ago and tied for 25th on Sunday in Japan, but his travel schedule could catch up with him. His game also is less than ideal for Congaree, as he hits it straight and makes his putts but doesn’t have a ton of power. He ranks 192nd in driving distance so far, at less than 287 yards. The 20-year-old will have trouble keeping up with the big hitters in this field, and his accuracy is unlikely to make up for that.

On the other hand, the expert knows McIlroy is one of several players in this field who play well on Tom Fazio designs. In addition to his victory on the architect’s Summit Club track last year, he went 22 under to finish fourth in the BMW Championship at Caves Valley in 2021 and has two victories and a runner-up at Quail Hollow. McIlroy has been on a tear, finishing in the top 20 in all but one event since his runner-up finish at the Masters last April, a span that includes three victories. He also has his eye on the No. 1 ranking, with a chance he could take it this week. See who else to pick here.
