Just four days after the PGA Tour’s stars wrapped up a thrilling event in Maui, a slightly less-impressive full field will tee off at the 2023 Sony Open on Thursday. The 144-player Sony Open 2023 field includes seven of the world’s top 25, including Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama and Tom Kim. They will face a much different test on the shorter Waialae Country Club course in Honolulu, but scoring low hasn’t been a problem there. It should be another picture-perfect week in the Hawaiian islands, so a score of 20 under or more is in the cards. Matsuyama won last year, tying Russell Henley at 23 under with a furious comeback before making eagle on the first playoff hole.     

Kim (10-1) and Sungjae Im (12-1) are the favorites in Caesars Sportsbook’s latest 2023 Sony Open odds. They are followed by Matsuyama (15-1), Spieth (16-1) and Brian Harman (16-1). Henley (22-1) also is among the eight players shorter than 30-1 in the Sony Open 2023 field. Kim is priced at $10,500 in the DraftKings Fantasy rankings, and Im, Matsuyama and Spieth are all at least $10,000.

One thing Holliman is certain about this week is that Kim will put up a good result. “There’s good reason for the high price,” the expert says, “but he’ll be worth it.” Two victories in his first 15 PGA Tour events is just a continuation of a dominant career that includes 11 in various tours around the world. “The kid knows how to win,” Holliman says, and he is one of the most accurate ball-strikers on tour. Hideki Matsuyama will try to defend his crown this week when the 2023 Sony Open tees off Thursday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. Matsuyama aims to become the first golfer to go back-to-back at Waialae since Jimmy Walker (2014-15). Matsuyama stormed back from five strokes down with nine holes to play last year and beat Russell Henley with an eagle on the first playoff hole. The full PGA Tour gets rolling again this week when the 2023 Sony Open tees off Thursday at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. Almost half the PGA Tour field from last week will make the short hop over to Honolulu for the 2023 Sony Open at Waialae Country Club. In a surprise move, McDonald is fading U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick (22-1), who is one of the best at grinding out victories. Unfortunately, that won’t be required this week on a Kapalua course that won’t put up much fight. The Englishman didn’t shoot better than 64 all of last season, and his best score among his eight worldwide victories is 17 under. The average winning score over the past decade in Maui is 23 under. This is also the 28-year-old’s tournament debut, and it typically takes a couple of rounds to get used to the rolling terrain on this course.

The Hero World Challenge will close out the PGA Tour’s calendar year with 20 of the world’s top players, and all eyes will be on host Tiger Woods. The 15-time major champion will play in the tournament at Albany Golf Course in The Bahamas for the first time since 2019. He played in only three majors last season as he built strength following a serious car crash in February of 2021. Woods last played at The Open Championship in June. He will be joined in the Hero World Challenge 2022 field by 2022 major champions Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Thomas and other PGA Tour stars like Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa and Jordan Spieth. Viktor Hovland is the defending champion, and he edged Scheffler by one stroke after shooting a 6 under 66 in the final round to finish 18 under. Morikawa, who could have taken over as world No. 1 with a victory, entered the final round with a six stroke lead but went 4 over to tie for fifth.

The latest 2022 Hero World Challenge odds list Rahm, who won the tournament by four strokes in his debut back in 2018, as the 5-1 favorite. One shocking pick from McDonald: The expert is fading Sam Burns (16-1) despite his three victories last season and a T-3 here. “Burns hasn’t been the same since the summer,” the expert says. The 26-year-old won the Charles Schwab in May and finished in the top five at the Canadian Open in June, but has one top-10 finish since then. That came at the CJ Cup, where his putter helped him go 11 under par to tie for seventh. Burns is 226th in greens in regulation and 146th in strokes gained around the green, so until those improve, his putter can’t save him.  

On the other hand, the expert knows excellent ball-strikers are the players who tend to win in Albany, and Rahm is among the world’s best. The final official PGA Tour event of the calendar year brings a slightly subpar field, and it took a big hit on Tuesday when favorite Tony Finau withdrew from the 2022 RSM Classic. The tournament tees off Thursday at Sea Island Resort in St. Simons Island, Ga., and five of the top 40 players in the world and eight major champions are set to tee off. Brian Harman is the highest-ranked player in the RSM Classic 2022 field at 26th, followed by Sepp Straka (28th) and Seamus Power (30th). Past major winners include Webb Simpson, Jason Day and Justin Rose, and six past RSM Classic winners are scheduled to tee up this week. They include two-time winner Robert Streb (2014, 2020) and MacKenzie Hughes, who won in 2016 and was the runner-up last year. The tournament has gone to a playoff four of the seven years it has been played on the Seaside and Plantation courses, and the average winning score over that span is 20 under par.

One surprising prediction from McDonald: Montgomery will struggle on a course that is “a less-than-stellar statistical fit,” so the expert is fading him. The 27-year-old ran off 10 consecutive top-15 finishes dating back to his time on the Korn Ferry Tour. He led that tour in scoring average (68.36) last season, but the rookie comes in off a tie for 57th at last week’s Houston Open. Montgomery is an excellent putter, ranking 11th in strokes gained, but he wasn’t on last week, and now he heads to a course where his power off the tee will be neutralized.

On the other hand, Montgomery loves what he sees from Matt Kuchar, who is priced at 50-1 and could get a boost from playing at home. Tony Finau will try to continue his recent dominance when he tees off Thursday in the 2022 RSM Classic at Sea Island Resort in Georgia. Finau comes into St. Simons Island fresh off a four-stroke victory at last week’s Houston Open, his third win in his past seven events. Top 2022 RSM Classic expert picks

Scottie Scheffler has a shot at reclaiming the world’s No 1 ranking at this week’s 2022 Houston Open, which tees off Thursday at Memorial Park Golf Course. A victory this week would move Scheffler back ahead of Rory McIlroy, and the Texas native has reason to feel confident. He held the 54-hole lead at Memorial Park last year, and he comes off a tie for third at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba last week. Russell Henley, who won that tournament by four strokes and is the 2017 Houston Open champion, also is scheduled to be part of the 2022 Cadence Bank Houston Open field. Sam Burns, a three-time winner last season, also returns to action for the first time since the CJ Cup. This is the third year of the tournament at Memorial Park, and Carlos Ortiz won the inaugural one at 13 under, while Jason Kokrak went 10 under last year.

Scheffler is listed as the 11-2 favorite in the latest 2022 Houston Open odds from Caesars Sportsbook. Nine golfers are priced shorter than 30-1, led by Burns (14-1), Tony Finau (14-1) and Aaron Wise (18-1). Hideki Matsuyama (20-1), Henley (22-1), Maverick McNealy (22-1), Taylor Montgomery (22-1) and Jason Day (25-1) also are among the favorites in the Houston Open 2022 field. Top 2022 Houston Open expert picks

One surprise from McDonald this week: He is fading McNealy again, as he doesn’t expect his run of strong results to continue much longer. McNealy is just too reliant on his hot putter, and despite four straight top-20 finishes, he hasn’t been in true contention for his first victory. “McNealy’s name is still too high on the odds board,” McDonald says, “and should be passed over for others in his price range.” The 27-year-old is fourth in strokes gained putting but 135th in greens in regulation and 138th tee to green, and that isn’t a recipe for long-term success.   

On the flip side, McDonald knows Finau’s approach is proven, and he expects the four-time tour winner to rebound from his missed cut from last week. Finau went 3 under par at Mayakoba to miss the cut on the number, and the only other time he has missed the weekend since March came at the U.S. Open. He ended last season with four top-10’s in his last five starts, including consecutive victories, and he was 3-1-0 at the Presidents Cup six weeks ago. Viktor Hovland will be seeking his third straight title in the PGA Tour event when he tees off Thursday at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba. Hovland, ranked No. 11, is one of five players in the top 20 in the World Golf Ranking who are scheduled to compete this week. Reigning Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, who dropped to No. 2 in the world behind Rory McIlroy two weeks ago, leads the field in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Hovland and Scheffler will be joined by ninth-ranked Collin Morikawa, 14th-ranked Tony Finau and No. 16 Billy Horschel. Hovland went 20 under par in 2020 at El Camaleon Golf Course to win his second PGA Tour event, then went 23 under last year to win by four strokes. There are six former winners in the field, including Matt Kuchar (2018) and Harris English (2013).

Top 2022 World Wide Technology Championship expert picks

One player McDonald is fading this week is Maverick McNealy, who is high on the odds list but doesn’t deserve to be. In fact, McDonald doesn’t expect the 26-year-old to make the weekend. The former No. 1 amateur doesn’t have a tour victory yet, and while he has posted three straight top-20 finishes, he hasn’t been posting really low scores. That is what he will need to do here, and he has five rounds of 69 or higher in his past eight. “Despite his current quality, there are flaws in his game,” McDonald says, and the expert says he could get in big trouble off the tee.

On the flip side, the flaws in Morikawa’s game shouldn’t be a major problem this week, so McDonald is expecting big things. The PGA and Open champion is excellent from tee to green, and his issues have come the closer he gets to the hole. El Camaleon isn’t terribly tricky on or around the greens, and despite a T-29 finish, Morikawa was sixth in strokes gained tee to green at the CJ Cup. He hasn’t won in almost a year, but he had eight top-10 finishes and was twice a runner-up last season.
