Gary Woodland will play with Cobra clubs and wear Puma apparel and footwear as part of the new deal

Heading into the Sony Open in Hawaii, Woodland is due to play a bag full of the brand’s clubs, including its new and as yet unreleased driver, fairway woods, and irons for 2023. He will also continue his long-standing relationship with Puma Golf and wear head-to-toe Puma apparel.
Woodland, 38, who turned pro in 2007, has four PGA Tour wins to his credit including the 2018 Waste Management Phoenix Open and the 2019 US Open at Pebble Beach.“I have built a great connection with the Cobra Puma Golf team,” said Woodland, who is currently 100th in the OWGR. “I couldn’t be happier to put their equipment into my bag. Their technology and innovation are outstanding and I’m particularly excited to put the new 2023 unreleased driver in play. It’s as long and fast as anything I’ve hit and looks great at address.”
During the 2023 season, Woodland will continue to wear a selection of Puma apparel and footwear, including items from the Volition America collection, and will alternate between Puma and Cobra caps. The full details of Woodland’s equipment line up will be released next week following the announcement of Cobra’s new line up of clubs for 2023.

BMW extends sponsorship deal with DP World Tour https://golfingagency.com/bmw-extends-sponsorship-deal-with-dp-world-tour/ Tue, 13 Dec 2022 13:01:51 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/bmw-extends-sponsorship-deal-with-dp-world-tour/
The BMW PGA Championship remains one of the showpiece events on the DP World Tour’s calendar

BMW have signed an extension to its sponsorship deal with the DP World Tour that will see the German-owned car brand remain the headline sponsor of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth until 2027.

As part of the agreement, BMW will also remain as title sponsor of the BMW International Open in Germany, where it will also remain the promoter of the tournament.

BMW’s relationship with Europe’s top tier tour dates back to 1989, when it ran the first BMW International Open in its hometown of Munich. BMW then became headline sponsor of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in 2005, and will be celebrating its 25th anniversary of supporting the event in 2026.
Guy Kinnings, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Commercial Officer of the European Tour group, said: “Over the last 33 years we have developed an extremely close working relationship that continues to drive strong value to BMW’s global engagement in sport. With this extended partnership, we will have ample opportunities to use the DP World Tour to showcase both their range of products and our collective leadership credentials in passion areas such as sustainability and technology innovation.
“Together, we will also make sure that the BMW PGA Championship and BMW International Open keep innovating to elevate the fan experience and continue to be key moments on the sporting and entertainment calendars in Germany and the UK each year.”

Tickets for next year’s BMW PGA Championship, which takes place at Wentworth Club from September 12-17, are already on sale and can be bought here. This year’s tickets for the weekend’s play sold out for the first time in the event’s history.

]]> LIV Golf left pointless as ranking body rejects Mena Tour deal https://golfingagency.com/liv-golf-left-pointless-as-ranking-body-rejects-mena-tour-deal/ https://golfingagency.com/liv-golf-left-pointless-as-ranking-body-rejects-mena-tour-deal/#respond Sat, 08 Oct 2022 00:16:04 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/liv-golf-left-pointless-as-ranking-body-rejects-mena-tour-deal/

LIV Golf‘s attempt to gain world ranking points for its players via a backdoor deal with the Mena Tour have been snubbed by the body that organises the rankings, leaving the Saudi-backed series with no immediate prospect of being granted official status.

The Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) has confirmed that LIV Golf events this season will not offer world ranking points, despite the Saudi-backed circuit’s new partnership with the MENA Tour, a Dubai-based tour that has offered world ranking points since 2016.

On Wednesday the Mena Tour announced a ‘strategic alliance’ with LIV Golf that would see all its events added to their schedule and all members of the LIV Golf circuit joining their tour. LIV Golf believed the move would make their events eligible to receive official world ranking points, potentially as soon as the Thailand tournament beginning today (Friday), although the OWGR said it had been given insufficient notice of the development and that a decision would only be made following a review.

In a statement earlier this week, the OWGR said: “We received a communication from the MENA Tour on October 5 detailing significant changes to the MENA Tour’s membership structure, along with an outline of the initial series of tournaments in the 2022/23 MENA Tour season. OWGR notes that the first two tournaments in this series appeared to be the same as the LIV Golf Invitational Series tournaments in Bangkok and Jeddah. The communication from the MENA Tour included a starting field data file for the Bangkok tournament, confirming that to be the case.

The statement added: “Regular official MENA Tour events conducted over 54 or 72 holes with a cut after 36 holes, and its Tour Championship, typically conducted over 54 holes with no cut, remain eligible for inclusion in the OWGR.”

All 48 players who competed at LIV Golf’s tournament in Chicago last month sent a joint letter to OWGR chairman Peter Dawson urging him to award ranking points to competitors, although the application for their own world ranking status remains under review.

How to deal with golf cheats… https://golfingagency.com/how-to-deal-with-golf-cheats/ https://golfingagency.com/how-to-deal-with-golf-cheats/#respond Sat, 10 Sep 2022 20:07:59 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022/09/10/how-to-deal-with-golf-cheats/

Spotting a Golf Bandit in action

We’ve all had to deal with golf cheats at one time or another, yet golf is supposed to be the great game of honour, or so they say.

Except when it isn’t, and you find that you are confronted with someone trying to manipulate the rules to their own advantage.

With golf being a self-policing sport and often no officials around when needed, it is down to an individual to uphold the rules.

So you might find it’s down to you to decide whether he or she has broken them.

With players using their own discretion, it’s sad to say that some amateur golfers bend the rules whenever they can.

These golfers are  known as ‘Golf Bandits’.

Here are a few things to look out for when dealing with golf cheats…

The Leather Wedge

Look out for the casual nudge of the ball with the shoe in the rough or near an obstacle – known in the trade as the ‘leather wedge’. Another trick is to casually press down the grass behind the ball with the foot or even rolling the ball, for a cleaner impact.

Improving lie in the rough

Given a bad lie in the rough, a cheat will pick the ball up, supposedly to identify it, but then replace it in an improved position, allowing a better contact out of the rough. N.B. Identifying the ball is allowed but should be witnessed by a playing partner.

Point of entry

A ball played into a water hazard brings about a penalty of 1 stroke. The next shot must be played, keeping the point of entry between the hole and the point from where the next shot is played from.

However, someone who cheats will tend to steal yards nearer the hole, by changing the point of entry making the next shot easier than it should be.

Changing a score

People who cheat don’t seem to have good memories, especially when it comes to scoring! They will often declare a score 1 shot less than they actually scored. Over 18 holes, this makes a massive difference to their scorecard, even if they only do it once or twice. They also tend to dismiss any air shots or penalties they incur throughout the round.

Golf Bandits, how to stop cheats

Moving the coin

Golf cheats often use a big coin, like an old penny, 50p or inch-diameter marker. They then carefully slide it as far as possible under the ball. When replaced, the distance between ball and coin will be at least an inch nearer the hole or slightly to the side to avoid a mark on the green.

Gamesmanship

Cheats, for some reason, also have poor etiquette on the golf course. Things they get up to include whistling, talking, coughing, rattling change on someone’s backswing or casting a shadow across someone’s putt or tee shot.

False or Fake handicaps

Golf Bandits have a habit of protecting their handicaps too. Especially if they enter lots of open competitions where there’s a healthy prize table or sweeps are on offer.

During club competitions, if they are in danger of a handicap cut without a chance of winning a prize, they will manipulate their final gross score. Easy to do, by taking extra shots to make their score higher than it would normally be on the last few holes of the round.

Golf Bandits, how to stop cheats

What should I do if I see or catch a cheat in action?

If you come across someone you think has cheated and you have someone who can verify your suspicions, then have a quiet word with the individual directly is the first action to take. However, choose your words carefully.

Don’t start by immediately calling them a ‘cheat’. Be more tactful. Ask in a way that is deemed as inquisitive rather than accusing. Perhaps start with a passive comment.

If you notice someone finding water after a shot, ask “Apologies, just wanted to ask, what is the rule when it comes to water hazards?”

That way they are not immediately on the defensive.

  • It may be that they just aren’t aware of any breach of the rules.
  • Explain that their actions are against the spirit of the game.
  • Point out that they can be reported to the committee or event organiser, if they don’t ‘make good’ any discrepancies with the score.
  • If you don’t have a witness to any form of cheating and want to avoid confrontation, you can report to the committee or refuse to sign their scorecard.

Happy Golfing!
