Holiday season may well be in full swing, but that is not stopping what was supposed to be one of the most anticipated events of the golf year. While not The Masters, PGA Championship or any of the four major championships, the 2022 Hero World Challenge was lined up to be appointment viewing before Tiger Woods withdrew on Monday, citing plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

While no longer in the field, Woods is sure to get the collective golf world talking. Present around the Albany property throughout the week, the 46-year-old will play the role of tournament host to 20 of the best player in the world. All 20 players check inside the top 35 of the Official World Golf Rankings with six of the top 10 set to compete. Highlighted by world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler and recent DP World Tour Championship winner Jon Rahm, the collective class of the field more than makes up for the small pool of players. 

Viktor Hovland holds the title of defending champion when the Norwegian caught fire this time last year. Winning three times over just five starts, Hovland rose to high as world No. 3 thanks in part to his play in The Bahamas. Tony Finau, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick and Xander Schauffele are among those who will look to follow in the footsteps of Hovland and head into the winter off of a victorious conquest.

The last event of the last PGA Tour swing season gets underway this week at the 2022 RSM Classic. Traveling to Sea Island, Georgia, a number of competitors will enjoy a home game as the Sea Island Mafia welcomes the field to the Atlantic Coast for the 13th time in tournament history.

Originally leading the charge was last week’s Houston Open winner Tony Finau. The world No. 12 was forced to withdraw Tuesday afternoon citing an injury, and with his absence the path to victory has widened for the remaining competitors. However, Justin Rose will be a member of this field for the third straight season after the Englishman was featured in the final group alongside Finau in Houston. Ultimately finishing T9, Rose will look for more of the same this week.

Sea Island residents Keith Mitchell, Brian Harman, Harris English, Will Gordon, Greyson Sigg and J.T. Poston round out the action as the PGA Tour wraps up the 2022 calendar year before resuming at the Tournament of Champions in Kapalua in January 2023.

In his place, a resurgent Jason Day hopes to enter the winner’s circle as the Australian arrives at Sea Island off four consecutive top-25 finishes. After traveling international in three of the last four weeks, the PGA Tour returns to the United States for the 2022 Houston Open at Memorial Park Golf Course. Taking to the Tom Doak redesign for the third time in event history, players will be tasked with handling firm and fast conditions around this municipal course just outside the heart of Houston. With only two events remaining in the 2022-23 swing season, players will look to garner any momentum possible before heading into the holiday offseason.

The first-round action went off without a hitch on Thursday, but golfers were not so lucky in the second round on Friday as inclement pushed the Round 2 golf into Saturday. Heading into the weekend, it’s the Tony Finau Show as the American held a commanding four-shot lead after completing his round shooting an 8-under 62 before play was suspended. All eyes will be on whether the veteran can continue to separate from the pack to earn his fifth career PGA Tour victory come Sunday.

Historically played across from the WGC-HSBC Championship, the successive cancellation of this event due to COVID-19 has allowed the Bermuda Championship to become a standalone FedEx Cup event on the PGA Tour. As such, not only are 500 FedEx Cup points up for grabs for the eventual winner, but also invitations to the Tournament of Champions, Players Championship, Masters and PGA Championship in 2023 — in addition to being exempt on the PGA Tour through 2025.

When put into this scope, the stakes could not be higher for a Bermuda Championship field that features rookies, journeymen and everyone in between. Denny McCarthy headlines the action as the 29-year-old is still in search of his first victory on the PGA Tour. Coming off a career year that saw him collect 11 top-20 finishes in 29 starts, the University of Virginia product will look to get his 2022-23 campaign jumpstarted alongside Seamus Power, Patrick Rodgers and a slew of PGA Tour rookies.
