Tom Kim may officially be him after outdueling Patrick Cantlay in the final round Sunday of the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open for his second victory on the PGA Tour. Triumphant for the second time in two months, the 20-year-old superstar who burst onto the scene at the 2022 Presidents Cup may only be getting started.

Beginning the day at 19 under and in a share of the lead, Kim quickly fell behind when Cantlay opened with a birdie of his own. In lockstep with veteran caddie Joe Skovron, Kim was unphased. The South Korean connected on his first birdie of the day on the par-4 fourth and added two more on Nos. 8-9 to turn in 3-under 32 and in possession of a two-stroke lead.

This comfortable margin would be short-lived as Cantlay found his stroke early on the inward nine. With consecutive birdies on 11 and 12, the pair went into the final third of TPC Summerlin all squared.

Back-and-forth Kim and Cantlay continued to go before arriving at the 17th tied at 24 under. Trading pars on the difficult par 3, Cantlay’s tee shot on the 72nd hole ultimately sealed his fate. Finding the native area, the world No. 4 attempted to play from the brush and left his golf ball at his feet before taking an unplayable and hitting his fourth shot into the water. Leading to a triple bogey, all Kim needed was a routine par for his second win in his last four starts.

Known to be automatic in clutch situations, it was not Cantlay, but rather Kim who held the steady hand. Getting around TPC Summerlin in a bogey-free fashion on the week, he became the first player on the PGA Tour to do so since Joaquin Niemann at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic and the first to do so in victory since J.T. Poston at the 2019 Wyndham Championship.

Consistently applying pressure on his playing competitor, this victory showcases the ways in which Kim may win in the future. Lapping the field on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship for his first win on the PGA Tour, this trip to the winner’s circle was considerably different given not only the competition, but the manner in which it was achieved.

Kim never flustered when Cantlay struck back and if he was, his poker face was strong enough to warrant a seat at a big-money table on the strip. Leaning on his short-game at opportune times, the combination of steadiness, touch and a dash of fieriness makes the 20-year-old not only fun to watch, but fun to root for.

With the victory Kim became the first player since Tiger Woods in 1996 to win twice on the PGA TOUR before turning 21.

While comparisons to Tiger Woods are far-fetched, it did almost feel Tiger-esque. Slowly draining the life out of the rest of the field, Kim never blinked in the face of adversity. When punched, he punched back. When faced with sticky situations, he played conservatively aggressive. And when given a chance to step on the neck, he took one giant step in more ways than one. Grade: A+

Here are the rest of our grades for the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open.

T2. Patrick Cantlay (-21): We may never see a 72nd hole from Cantlay like that ever again as the 2017 Shriners Children’s Open winner carded a triple bogey on the final hole to hand Kim the trophy. While some will suggest it was another quality outing for Cantlay — his third runner-up at TPC Summerlin in addition to his win — he needs to start putting these tournaments away. On the heels of a season where he lost in two playoffs and was a runner-up once more, the Californian has admitted to being tired of falling short. Yes, he has eight wins in his PGA Tour career, but given his talent, consistency and mental fortitude, it sure does feel light. Grade: A

7. Sungjae Im (-19): It was a nice defense for Im, who was nearly perfect except for a 70 in Round 2 that mostly took him out of the tournament. Across the last two Shriners Children’s Opens, Im has lost to just six total golfers. The question now is how close to No. 1 he can get. In the last five years, Im’s Data Golf ranking has looked like this: 230-80-30-25-15. Right now he’s No. 11. Can he get all the way into the top five or, gulp, even close to No. 1 over the next few years? Grade: A-

T8. Jason Day (-18): The former major winner closed with 63 to jump into the top 10, and it made me wonder what in the world Day has been up to over the last few years. So I dove into his statistics and his finishes. Day hasn’t won since the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship, but he has finished in the top 20 in over 20% of his events in each of the last four year. The biggest problems for Day have been with his iron play, where he went to a top 25 type player to barely tour average. He’s also gone from being the best putter in the world to being just a solid player. Hopefully the Shriners, which is his only individual top 10 since January, will be a nice kick start to him for 2023. Grade: A

T12. Davis Thompson (-16): Remember the name. Or should I say, remember the name? Thompson led after the first round of the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot when he was still an amateur at Georgia. After a nice year in 2022 on the Korn Ferry Tour—Thompson had four top 10s, including a win—he’s off to a good PGA Tour start this fall with three made cuts, including a T9 at the Fortinet Championship and this week’s T12. The even better news? He flushed it all week and was the worst putter of anybody inside the top 19 on this leaderboard. He’s somebody to keep an eye on over the next month. Grade: A-

T28. Patrick Welch (-13): You might be asking, “Wait, who in the world is Patrick Welch?” which is a totally reasonable question. The answer: He’s an amateur who plays collegiately for Oklahoma, is ranked No. 44 in the world, plays cross-handed and beat over 100 pros this week doing so. Here’s a look at his wild swing, which must be working considering he finished top 25 in the field in both strokes gained on approach and from tee to green. Grade: A+

The floodgates were always going to open for Patrick Cantlay ,and on Saturday they did just that. The 2017 Shriners Children’s Open champion catapulted his name to the top of the leaderboard with an exquisite third round of 11-under 60, leapfrogging his counterparts in the process. Good for a share of the course record and a share of the 54-hole lead, the Californian is now in prime position to notch his ninth career victory on the PGA Tour five years after capturing his first on these very grounds.

While unable to make birdie on his final hole to become the 13th member of the illustrious sub-60 club on the PGA Tour, Cantlay’s day was still indelible. The 30-year-old was as solid as can be, not once finding the rough and averaging a proximity of 21 feet with his approach shots.

His lone missed green in regulation came when his ball settled on the fringe of the par-3 8th, and if not for a so-so day with the putter, Cantlay’s 60 could have easily surpassed Jim Furyk’s 58. Connecting on only a single effort from outside 10 feet, the one putt Cantlay may want to have back is his 17-foot eagle chance on the par-5 16th that came a couple revolutions short of dropping.

Despite the spotlight rightfully settling on Cantlay, one cannot lose sight of the Energizer Bunny that is Tom Kim. Without a birdie on his back nine on Friday, the 20-year-old more than made amends on Saturday with six on his inward half. Making four straight birdies from Nos. 13-16, the South Korean was able to keep pace with the very American he disarmed on Day 3 of the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club.

Alongside Cantlay, the pair possess a three-stroke margin over their nearest pursuers, setting up for a potential duel between the unlikely foes. Opposite in demeanor and opposite in skillset, the primary focus of the two will be the same in the final round in Las Vegas: Win.

The leaders

1. Patrick Cantlay, Tom Kim (-19)

The betting favorite coming into the week, Cantlay has played the part through 54 holes at TPC Summerlin. Capturing his first victory here in 2017, he has since added finishes of 2nd-2nd-T8 to his Shriners Children’s Open résumé and looks well on his way to adding to his stellar history.

With a near flawless track record on these grounds, it was surprising to hear Cantlay critical of the conditions after his second round on Friday. Emphasizing the need to hit his approach shots closers as the new greens settle, Cantlay did just that on Saturday and led the field in strokes gained tee-to-green.

“[Sunday will be the] Same game plan as the first three days, and it’s going to take a low one again tomorrow,” said Cantlay. “This golf course yields low scores, and I expect the same tomorrow. Everyone will be gunning for me, and I’ve got to shoot a low one.”

Other contenders

T3. Matthew NeSmith, Mito Pereira (-16)

T5. Sungjae Im, S.H. Kim (-15)

T7. Aaron Rai, J.T. Poston, Adam Hadwin, Si Woo Kim, Robby Shelton (-14)

Im, the defending champion of this event, put together a middling first couple rounds, but much like Cantlay, exploded on Saturday. Signing for an 8-under 63, the two-time winner on the PGA Tour will look to add a third trophy to his mantle tomorrow. Im memorably carded a 9-under 62 to win by four strokes a season ago at TPC Summerlin, and given the play of Cantlay and Co., something similar may be needed again.

“It would be great meaning to me, back-to-back winning,” Im said. “I know it’s really difficult to win back to back, but I’ve got one more day. Today I didn’t think about any winning for tomorrow, I just clean and play without thinking about winning.”

Adam Hadwin making a habit of fronting the tab

Hopefully the boys will not be making their way down to the strip, because if so, Adam Hadwin’s tab could run wild. The Canadian connected for a hole-in-one late in his third round on the par-3 14th. Hadwin is no stranger to making aces on the PGA Tour as he made one four months ago at the Memorial and celebrated in memorable fashion. This shot was just as impressive despite the celebration being a bit more tame.

“It’s a good pin on the back right. I had to take some off a pitching wedge, and just kind of held it up there nicely,” said Hadwin. “It took off on a perfect line. Obviously when it lands, you never quite know, but it was on a perfect line, and I think it was going to be close regardless. So it’s a bonus to drop in.”

2022 Shriners Children’s Open updated odds and picks

  • Patrick Cantlay: 11/10
  • Tom Kim: 7/5
  • Sungjae Im: 20-1
  • Mito Pereira: 20-1
  • Matthew NeSmith: 20-1
  • S.H. Kim: 55-1
  • Si Woo Kim: 80-1
  • Adam Hadwin: 90-1

Earlier in the week, Cantlay was pegged as a player to win five times in the 2022-23 season, and his play through 54 holes doesn’t suggest otherwise. He has been exquisite off the tee, and his iron play followed suit in his memorable round on Saturday. With his ball-striking in sync, Cantlay has not needed to lean on his biggest weapon (the putter), which makes him all the more dangerous to raise the trophy on Sunday.

2022 Shriners Children’s Open leaderboard, scores: Mito Pereira goes low in Round 2 to command solo lead https://golfingagency.com/2022-shriners-childrens-open-leaderboard-scores-mito-pereira-goes-low-in-round-2-to-command-solo-lead/ https://golfingagency.com/2022-shriners-childrens-open-leaderboard-scores-mito-pereira-goes-low-in-round-2-to-command-solo-lead/#respond Sat, 08 Oct 2022 13:48:35 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022-shriners-childrens-open-leaderboard-scores-mito-pereira-goes-low-in-round-2-to-command-solo-lead/

There are no Presidents Cup snubs on the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open leaderboard, only those who competed a couple weeks ago at Quail Hollow Club. Mito Pereira leads the charge after a sizzling 8-under 63 on Friday, and is atop the leaderboard alone at 12 under heading into the final 36 holes at TPC Summerlin.

Utilizing a team competition as a launch pad for one’s season is nothing new on the PGA Tour (just look at Scottie Scheffler last year), and for Pereira it appears he is not alone. His fellow teammates from Quail Hollow, Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim, are some of his closest pursuers as they check in two strokes off the lead at 10 under alongside Las Vegas resident Maverick McNealy.

Cam Davis, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Sungjae Im all find themselves inside the top 20 for the time being, but to say the Shriners Children’s Open has strictly been an international party would be a lie. Americans Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa will surely have something to say about the outcome of this tournament with both only four strokes adrift in a tie for ninth.

The two men from the United States have yet to display their A-games around TPC Summerlin, and are more than capable of firing a round in the low 60s on Saturday to take control. While scoring is down a touch compared to recent years, favorable pin positions and ideal weather may lead to a birdie barrage finally coming to fruition over the weekend in Sin City.

The leader

1. Mito Pereira (-12)

After flashing serious form in the middle stages of the 2021-22 season, Pereira went cold. Showcasing his skillset at the 2022 PGA Championship, the Chilean went on to miss four of his final six starts to end his first full campaign on the PGA Tour. While he limped to the finish line, Pereira’s play was still enough to garner him a spot on the Presidents Cup team, where some of this lost confidence may have been rediscovered.

“[Captain Trevor Immelman] Just really tried to put us in a position that we really want to play well and really trusting ourselves,” Pereira said of the international confidence. “Every day he did like a little speech of how good we are and how we can do this. So I think it really touched us.”

Other contenders

2. Robby Shelton (-11)

T3. Tom Kim, Si Woo Kim, Maverick McNealy

T6. Kevin Streelman, Cam Davis, Chad Ramey (-9)

T9. Patrick Rodgers, Patrick Cantlay, Matthew NeSmith, S.H. Kim, Adam Hadwin, Max Homa, Sam Ryder, Keith Mitchell (-8)

It was a run-of-the-mill first 11 holes for Si Woo Kim, who reached 10 under early in his second round. Stalling around the turn, disaster struck for the South Korean when he bladed his chip shot into the water on the par-4 12th leading to a triple bogey. Kim later made amends with a hole-out eagle on the par-4 15th from the greenside bunker and a birdie on the par-5 16th to reach 10 under yet again to keep his name in contention.

“I had a little between numbers and then hit a little pull hook. I think always pull hook is a little bit further, so I miss it. I just missed the one shot and then kind of had a tough lie. Then I had a bad chip and then make triple,” said Kim. “But Manny, my caddie, said keep it positive and we can get back. Yeah, I kept positive and just played my own.”

Momentum from Presidents Cup carrying on

At the start of the week, 10 Presidents Cup participants teed it up at TPC Summerlin with the vast majority coming from the international side. All 10 have made their way into the weekend with eight currently residing inside the top 20 — six of which are international. Led by Pereira and the South Korean duo, a new sense of confidence may been instilled from this team competition just a couple weeks ago.

“Obviously, with the amount of pressure there is in the Presidents Cup, and normally you play for yourself in individual tournaments, but you play for the whole team. For me, it’s actually like — it was so comfortable just knowing if I miss a shot, it’s on me,” said Tom Kim. “I’m not hurting anyone else. Just things like that, where you’re in a mindset where you’re a little more comfortable. For a lot of us players, it was a big learning experience, and I think we’re going to keep growing.”

Cantlay discusses TPC Summerlin’s new greens

Horse for the course, Patrick Cantlay is once again well-positioned to contend for the Shriners Children’s Open title. Coming into this week having notched a victory, two runners-up and a top-10 result in his four prior trips to Las Vegas, this time around has been drastically different. Known to be one of the best putters on the PGA Tour, Cantlay was vocal with his displeasure in regards to putting surfaces in the desert.

“It’s [TPC Summerlin’s] in a lot worse condition, and you can see that with the scores,” said Cantlay. “The greens haven’t quite settled, so you get all sorts of bounces out there. Every green and every little spot is a different firmness. It’s hard to predict and hard to get it close because of that, but it’s the same way for everybody. I’ll just do my best to hit it as close as I can and make as many birdies as I can.”

The world No. 4 continued: “The greens are not settled. It’s very hard to read the greens. Even if you read it correctly, it could bounce offline in a heartbeat. I think it puts even more of a premium on ball-striking around this place. If I could keep driving it the way I am and hit a few more shots closer, I’ll be in a good spot.”

2022 Shriners Children’s Open updated odds and picks

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Mito Pereira: 9/2
  • Tom Kim: 11/2
  • Patrick Cantlay: 15/2
  • Si Woo Kim: 10-1
  • Robby Shelton: 10-1
  • Maverick McNealy: 12-1
  • Cam Davis: 16-1
  • Max Homa: 18-1
  • Sungjae Im: 20-1

All the big hitters came to play this week, but I have a sense of a Saturday run coming from a player not on this list. Sam Ryder has been a name I’ve been following this week as he arrived with both his irons and putter in good form. Through two rounds, he ranks 10th in strokes gained approach, and would be found on the first page of the leaderboard if not for a poor putting display on Friday. Instead, Ryder is 100-1 sitting at 8 under and in a tie for ninth where he takes a backseat to the likes of Cantlay and Homa despite still being in contention.

The first round leaderboard of the Shriners Children’s Open is fascinating. Tom Hoge leads after the round was suspended due to darkness Thursday with a stellar 8-under 63, but a host of players who bring interesting storylines to the table are just behind him.

While some of the biggest names in the field — Patrick Cantlay, Rickie Fowler and Max Homa — didn’t ascend to the very top of the table, they’re all still very much in the mix after strong starts at TPC Summerlin. All will chase Hoge, though, over the final three days as he tries to add to his 2022 win collection after taking the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier this year.

Let’s take a look at his round as well as who else is in the hunt this week.

The leader

T1. Tom Hoge (-8)

Hoge was a menace in Round 1, although he said that was “a little bit unexpected” because he took some time away from golf over the last few weeks. He finished third in approach shots and third from tee to green, which means he didn’t have to putt it all that well to shoot the only 63 in the field on Thursday. This is nothing new though. Since Jan. 1, Hoge is a top 30 iron player in the world, and even higher than that if you look at PGA Tour-only players. He is unlikely to fade even if he doesn’t win what would be the second Tour victory of his career following his first in February at Pebble Beach.

There’s a lot at stake for somebody like Hoge this week, especially considering only the top 70 in the FedEx Cup rankings will make it into the FedEx Cup Playoffs this year. He’s coming off a career year in which he cleared $4 million and finished inside the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings for the first time in his life (he finished 10th). To improve on that would be pretty incredible.

“Yeah, I felt like last fall I got off to a good start,” Hoge said. “I’ve played well in the fall in the past. I feel like there’s a lot of good golf courses that set up well for me in the fall. That’s one of the reasons why I’m playing a lot this year still. I feel like I could get off to a nice start in the FedEx Cup. I felt like I had that last year and continue that into the west coast. Just trying to do more of the same.

“I didn’t play as well as I would have liked in the summer last year, but you get off to this nice start, and you can kind of relax even when you’re not playing as well. Just trying to play as well as I can here in the fall and give it that head start.”

Other contenders

T2. Si Woo Kim, Maverick McNealy (-7)
T4. Keith Mitchell, Thomas Detry, Will Gordon, Tom Kim, Sam Ryder, Sungjae Im (-6)

There are so many different directions we could go here, but let’s keep it locked on how well the Presidents Cup International Team showed out in Round 1. It has three players in the top 11, including last year’s winner at this event, Sungjae Im. Im got one of the featured groups this week, and he picked up where he left off not only last year but also a few weeks ago when he starred at Quail Hollow.

Si Woo Kim also mirrored his Presidents Cup finale, where he took down Justin Thomas, by getting within one of Hoge. Is it a coincidence that those guys are carrying so much into this week’s Shriner’s event? Maybe, but also maybe not considering the experience they all had.

“I was not much confidence before Presidents Cup because I didn’t finish well like at the end,” Kim said. “I think that I had great confidence from the Presidents Cup, and then like everything feels comfortable and so much tension and so much pressure on the Presidents Cup week. So now like too much calm and nothing much pressure on it. So I try to keep more focused and like positive.”

Tom Kim forever

Tom Kim, Si Woo Kim’s partner for a chunk of the week at Quail Hollow, also started strong in Vegas after an incredible quote he gave early in the week about catching Tiger Woods’ career PGA Tour record of 82 victories.

“I’m always myself,” Tom Kim said. “The situation hasn’t really changed of who I am a little bit. No, I don’t really think it’s really changed for me. I think it’s going to be the same way. Tiger has 82 wins on the PGA Tour. Until I get to 83, it’s going to be hard for me to think a little different.”

Tom Kim forever.

2022 Shriners Children’s Open updated odds and picks

  • Sungjae Im: 7-1
  • Patrick Cantlay: 15/2
  • Tom Hoge: 15/2
  • Tom Kim: 10-1
  • Si Woo Kim: 10-1
  • Maverick McNealy: 14-1

I want to believe Tom Kim is going to win this golf tournament, of course, but I’m not sure 10-1 is a great number for him at this juncture. Instead I’d love to draw your attention to Keith Mitchell, who is just outside the shortest players at 18-1. He finished fourth from tee to green and fourth on approach shots on Thursday and will be a tough out if he keeps that kind of iron play up. He’s the sharp pick here even amid the bigger names. Homa (four back) at 25-1 is also worth a look.

Many PGA Tour stars who played key roles at the Presidents Cup are back in action this week at the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open, which is set to tee off Thursday in Las Vegas. World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay leads a Shriners Children’s Open 2022 field that includes 12 of the world’s top 50 players. Defending champion Sungjae Im also is among those golfers, and the 19th-ranked South Korean tied the tournament record at 24 under par last year on the strength of a final-round 62. Cantlay and Max Homa were a big part of the United States team that cruised to a 17-.5-12.5 victory in the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow two weeks ago. Cantlay went 3-1-0 and Homa went 4-0-0 in Charlotte. Im put up a valiant effort for the losing International side, finishing with a 2-2-1 mark. Homa, who won the Fortinet Championship the week before the Presidents Cup, also is scheduled to tee off Thursday. Homa has missed the cut four times in five outings at TPC Summerlin but comes in off a season where he won twice and finished fifth in the Tour Championship.

The latest 2022 Shriners Children’s Open odds from Caesars Sportsbook list Cantlay (7-1), Im (10-1) and Homa (15-1) as the favorites. They are the only golfers priced under 20-1. Aaron Wise (22-1), Tom Kim (22-1) and Taylor Montgomery (28-1) also are among the top contenders in the Shriners Children’s Open 2022 field. Before making any 2022 Shriners Children’s Open picks, be sure you check out the PGA Tour predictions and best bets from golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

McDonald hit both of his head-to-head matchup plays at last week’s Sanderson Farms Championship, and long-shot play Dean Burmester just missed cashing in at 66-1. The 33-year-old rookie stormed up the leaderboard on the weekend but ran out of time and finished fourth, just two strokes back.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Shriners Children’s Open expert picks

Shockingly, McDonald is fading Homa, despite his status as a favorite and the solid run he is on. He just hasn’t played well at TPC Summerlin, and his approach to the game doesn’t seem to quite fit the course. The only time he made the weekend, he finished 30th, and he has gone under par just five times in 12 rounds there. The California native doesn’t pile up birdies like he will need to this week. He was 40th on tour in birdies per round (3.94) and 35th in par breakers (22.76 percent) last season. He also ranked 118th in greens in regulation (66 percent).

On the other hand, McDonald knows Cantlay’s approach is perfect for Las Vegas, as he hits tons of greens and scores low. In fact, he is 70 under par over his four Shriners appearances. Cantlay won the tournament in 2017, was a runner-up twice and has a tie for eighth. He averaged almost 4.5 birdies per round last season, fifth on tour, and was sixth in scoring average (69.468). He comes in with confidence, as his Presidents Cup performance came after he won the BMW Championship in August and tied for seventh at the Tour Championship. See who else to pick here.

A fixture on the PGA Tour schedule since 1983, the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open will take place at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas and the fall event is attracting an impressive field. Patrick Cantlay won this event in 2017 and the No. 4 player in the Official World Golf Ranking will be back in action just a couple of weeks after helping lead the USA to a win in the Presidents Cup. Cantlay was also the runner-up in this event in 2018 and 2019. Play gets underway on Thursday. Oct. 6.

As the highest-ranked player in the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open field and a past champion, it’s no surprise that Cantlay is listed as a 6-1 favorite in the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open odds. There are plenty of other top players who have entered the tournament including Max Homa (14-1) and Sungjae Im (9-1). Before locking in your 2022 Shriners Children’s Open picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up over $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model included J.T. Poston in its best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet hit at +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $1,100. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scottie Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Jon Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open field is locked, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2022 Shriners Children’s Open predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open: Im, the defending champion and one of the top favorites at 9-1, stumbles this week and doesn’t even crack the top-five. Im put on a ball-striking clinic at this event last year, ranking No. 1 in both greens in regulation percentage and strokes gained: tee-to-green, helping him claim his second PGA Tour title.

However, Im was extremely inconsistent with his putter last season, ranking 92nd in putting average (1.762), 134th in one-putt percentage (38.57%) and 147th in 3-putt avoidance (3.16%), which doesn’t bode well for his chances to win this week. He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Shriners Children’s Open 2022 field.

Another surprise: Taylor Pendrith, a 50-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Pendrith is currently the No. 99 player in the world but he began the 2021-22 PGA Tour season outside the top 225 and has been climbing all year thanks to a string of quality results.

Pendrith has six top-13 finishes in his last seven worldwide starts, including a T-2 finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and a T-8 at the BMW Championship. He finished last season ranked 12th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: off-the-tee and he should be able to use that combination of length and accuracy to his advantage on the 7,255-yard par 71 this week. See who else to pick here.

How to make 2022 Shiners Children’s Open picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 35-1 or longer who will make surprising runs. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s picks here.

So, how about that ride in? The PGA Tour makes its way west to Las Vegas for the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin this week on the heels of an exciting Presidents Cup. A staple in the fall swing for nearly 40 years, the Shriners Children’s Open has seen everything from Tiger Woods’ first victory on the PGA Tour in 1996 to a walk-off hole-in-one courtesy of Johnathan Byrd in 2010.

Measuring roughly 7,250 yards and playing to a par 71, TPC Summerlin features an exciting stretch of finishing holes which includes a drivable par 4 and reachable par 5 over water that have the potential to win or bust one’s tournament aspirations.

This year’s field boasts the strongest group of players yet to be seen in the young 2022-23 season. World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay headlines the action and will be accompanied by defending champion Sungjae Im, fellow Presidents Cup teammate Max Homa as well as Tom Kim, Cameron Davis and breakout rookie Taylor Montgomery.

Some will attempt to kick off their seasons on the right foot while others will hope to keep the good times rolling. Homa captured the very first title of the season at the Fortinet Championship the week before the Presidents Cup, and Montgomery has garnered a pair of top-10 finishes to begin his PGA Tour career.

Let’s take a closer look at this week’s 2022 Shriners Children’s Open with odds provided via Caesars Sportsbook.

Event Information

Event: 2022 Shriners Children’s Open | Dates: Oct. 6-9
Location: TPC Summerlin — Las Vegas, Nevada
Par: 71 | Yardage: 7,255 | Purse: $8,000,000

2022 Shriners Children’s Open field, odds

  • Patrick Cantlay (7-1)
  • Sungjae Im (10-1): It is almost baffling that Im is now one year removed from his latest victory on the PGA Tour. Notching a singles victory over Cameron Young at the Presidents Cup, the South Korean carried his late-season form into Quail Hollow Club. In his final five starts of the 2021-22 campaign, Im captured three runner-up finishes — including the Tour Championship — and two other top-15 finishes for good measure. There is nothing to suggest that he won’t seriously contend in his title defense.
  • Max Homa (15-1)
  • Aaron Wise (22-1): Mackenzie Hughes and Ryan Fox parlayed the motivation of missing the Presidents Cup into victories last week on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. It was within the realm of possibilities that Wise was on Davis Love III’s short list to fill out the team but was passed over. Wise sprinted through the finish line last season and ultimately finished T13 at the Tour Championship on the shoulders of steady ball-striking throughout the postseason. In six prior trips to TPC Summerlin, the Vegas resident has collected three top-15 finishes.
  • Tom Kim (22-1): What could Kim possibly do as an encore to his Presidents Cup performance? The 20-year-old Korean was the heart and soul of the international team but ran out of steam on Sunday with a singles defeat to Homa. His iron play has been terrific for the past few months, but a letdown fells almost inevitable after such high level of play in Charlotte.
  • Taylor Montgomery (28-1): Montgomery has exceeded expectations through two tournaments. Finishing on the podium in Napa, the UNLV product then went to Country Club of Jackson and connected on yet another top-10 finish. He should have a nice comfort level around TPC Summerlin, and perhaps that is what Montgomery needs to propel to him to his first title on the PGA Tour.
  • Alex Noren (35-1)
  • Cameron Davis (40-1)
  • Brian Harman (40-1)
  • Taylor Pendrith (40-1): The Canadian had a Presidents Cup debut to forget after going 0-4-0 at Quail Hollow Club. This blemish on his résumé shouldn’t dismiss the quality of his play prior to his time with the international team. Pendrith has largely been terrific since recovering from a rib injury in the spring of 2022. Since his return, the 31-year-old has five top-15 finishes in seven tournaments.
  • Tom Hoge (40-1)
  • Emiliano Grillo (40-1)
  • Davis Riley (40-1)
  • Si Woo Kim (45-1): Many say a team event can change the trajectory of one’s career. It happened to Scottie Scheffler in 2021 and maybe, just maybe, it will get Kim back on track after a middling 2021-22 season. Taking down Justin Thomas in Sunday singles, Kim wielded the broom stick like a seasoned Adam Scott. He is now set to make his season debut at a course which has been kind to him in the past. In five previous Shriners Children’s Opens, the former Players Champion has racked up three top-25 finishes including a T8 result in 2020.

The 2022-23 PGA Tour schedule rolls on this week as the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open tees-off from TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas on Thursday, Oct. 6. The Shriners Children’s Open 2022 features a great mix of proven champions and budding superstars eager to make their mark on the PGA Tour. Sungjae Im, who secured nine top-10 finishes last season, is the defending champion of this event and he’s expected to be in the mix again this week.

Im is listed at 9-1 to repeat according to the latest 2022 Shriners Children’s Open odds. Patrick Cantlay, the 2018 champion, is the 6-1 favorite, with Max Homa (14-1), Aaron Wise (18-1) and Tom Kim (22-1) next in line on the PGA odds board.

In order to score well at TPC Summerlin, players will need to consistently find the green in regulation and few do it better than Pendrith. In fact, the 31-year-old finished last season ranked 10th in greens in regulation percentage (70.66%). He also ranked inside the top-15 in driving distance (316.1) and strokes gained: off-the-tee (.591), two statistics that make him a strong value pick for your 2022 Shriners Children’s Open bets. See who else to pick here.

The strongest field of the new season is on tap this week as the PGA Tour heads west for the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay highlights a Shriners Children’s Open 2022 field that features 12 of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking. Cantlay is playing his first event of the season’s fall portion after going 3-1-0 for the victorious United States team at the 2022 Presidents Cup two weeks ago. The International Team from that event also is well represented this week, led by South Korean Sungjae Im, who is back to defend his 2021 Shriners title. Tom Kim, who spurred on the Internationals with his energy and went 2-3-0 in the 17.5-12.5 Team USA victory at Quail Hollow, also is set for his first PGA Tour event of the season. The 20-year-old was a finalist for 2021-22 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Max Homa, who won the Fortinet Championship before going 4-0-0 in Team USA’s victory, also is among the stars in the 2022 Shriners Children’s Open field.

The latest 2022 Shriners Children’s Open odds list Cantlay as a 13-2 favorite, with Im (10-1) and Homa (14-1) not far behind. Among the other contenders in the Shriners Children’s Open 2022 field are Aaron Wise (18-1) and Kim (30-1), with every other golfer listed at 40-1 or longer.

Shockingly, McDonald is fading Homa, one of the biggest names in the field and one of the clear favorites. The expert knows the 31-year-old already has a victory this year and also performed well in the Presidents Cup, but he also has seen the Californian’s track record at TPC Summerlin. Homa has played this event five times, and he missed the cut in four of them and finished 30th in the other. He doesn’t hit the green as often as he will need to in Las Vegas, as he ranked 110th in greens in regulation last season and was 82nd on tour in scrambling.

On the other hand, the expert is looking forward to seeing if Cantlay can continue his excellent play at Summerlin. He won the 2017 Shriners for his first career victory and also was a runner-up twice before finishing eighth in his last appearance in 2020. He is 70 under par over those four events. Cantlay finished in the top 10 in 12 of his 20 tournaments last season, winning twice, including the BMW Championship playoff event, and finishing as a runner-up three times. He was sixth on tour in scoring average (49.468) and fifth in birdie average (4.44). See who else to pick here.
