While the LIV Golf Championship wound down with $34 million on the line between 16 golfers in Miami on Sunday, Seamus Power had something even more valuable at stake one time zone east of where Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed were busy winning the $16 million first prize at LIV Miami.

Power shot a roller coaster of a 70 in the final round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship to go with three consecutive 65s to start the week and beat Thomas Detry by a single shot. The win gets Power into next year’s Masters (he’s only played in one in his career), moves him up from his impressive No. 48 spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, nets him 500 FedEx Cup points and, perhaps most intriguing of all, officially puts him on the 2023 Ryder Cup watch list.

The Irishman went out in 33 on Sunday but came home with four bogeys (including three in his last four holes!) and a 37 that could have upended his chances. However, his main competitor in the final round in Bermuda, Ben Griffin, had an even wackier back nine as he shot a 4-over 39 on the back with two birdies, four bogeys and a double.

“Delighted to get it done,” the affable European said after his round. “… absolutely delighted.”

The win is Power’s second on the PGA Tour — he also took the Barbasol Championship in 2021. But don’t let the quality of victory obfuscate what has been a terrific rise for somebody who doesn’t get as much run as fellow countryman Shane Lowry but could possibly a teammate of Lowry’s come Rom next September.

“Completely different feeling but just as special,” said the 35-year-old after his win. “It’s so hard. I play a lot of tournaments and this is only my second. It’s amazing it’s special. It’s going to take a while to sink in, but absolutely over the moon.”

In 2019 Power was a (well) below average PGA Tour player who was averaging -1.0 strokes per round, but in each of the last three seasons he’s improved to the point that he’s now hanging out in the statistical neighborhood with golfers like Jason Day, Paul Casey, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott.

Perhaps even more impressively, Power came into this week’s Bermuda Championship as one of the handful of favorites to win … and then he won. That’s one of the hardest things in golf to do, and now the question is whether he can move from being a good lower-tier PGA Tour player to competitive with the big boys in the most important events.

In 2022, Power qualified for all four major championships and had two top 12s and three top 30s in his four starts. This is encouraging and a sign of his tremendous growth as a golfer over the last several years.

Power could go a number of different directions from here. Perhaps he’ll remain as a good but not great PGA Tour golfer. Perhaps he’ll make yet another leap in 2023, contend in more majors and notch his first Ryder Cup experience in Rome. Perhaps somewhere in the middle of those two realities is where he’ll eventually land. Regardless, his win in Bermuda on Sunday was a reminder of just how far he’s jumped in such a short timespan and what that could mean for his suddenly surging career.

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda (AP) — Seamus Power knows the wind and Port Royal well enough to realize he’d better do his scoring early. He did just that Saturday, added a few birdies late and had another 6-under 65 to share the lead with Ben Griffin in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Power holed a 30-foot birdie putt on the daunting par-3 16th and made a 12-foot birdie on the par-5 17th to atone for his lone mistake, a double bogey on the par-3 13th.

Griffin followed the same script in a strong wind with three birdies to open his round. He kept his approach under the wind on the 18th to 5 feet for birdie and a 66.

They were at 18-under 195, two shots clear of Kevin Yu (67) and Aaron Baddeley (68).

Power at No. 48 is the highest-ranked player at Port Royal.

The 35-year-old Irishman is no stranger to windy conditions and has played the Bermuda Championship the last few years.

“I knew I had to get birdies before 11,” Power said.

He made four in a row early and was 6 under for the day until a missed green and bad chips led to a double bogey on the 13th.

“One mistake. The wind drifted it a crazy amount,” Power said. “But I was able to hang in there and it puts me in a good spot going to tomorrow.”

The 16th is the toughest tee because the green is just right of the ocean and the wind was ripping from left to right.

“I don’t know how comfortable you get when you get to 16 and you’re having to aim your ball in the ocean,” Power said with a laugh. The shot finished pin-high on the right side of the green to a left flag, and the putt crept in the low side of the hole.

Power has one PGA Tour victory, the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky last year. He would love nothing more than a win for a strong early start to the PGA Tour and to assure his spot in the Masters.

For Griffin, even more as at stake.

He gave up on the game a few years ago and was working as a loan mortgage officer when he was inspired playing in a member-guest, and the members put up money for him to Monday qualify into a Korn Ferry Tour event.

That was the start of baby steps — making it through Korn Ferry Tour qualifying, and then last year earning his full card onto the PGA Tour.

A victory Sunday comes with a two-year exemption.

“It’s been surreal really the last year and two months of just being comfortable on the golf course and just going out and trying to win,” Griffin said. “When you’re playing mini-tour events and you’re trying to grind for top 10 just to break even, just have enough money to maybe do a Monday qualifier, it’s not necessarily the easiest in terms.

“Now that I have this little bit of freedom, I can go out there and just try to win golf tournaments.”

Ben Crane, whose last win was in 2014, started the third round with a one-shot lead and stumbled down the closing stretch with four bogeys in a five-hole stretch before he birdied the last hole for a 73. He fell six shots behind.

The PGA Tour returned to action Thursday following a dramatic finish last week in the CJ Cup in South Carolina and  responsible for following up such an ending is the 2022 Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course. Typically an alternate-field event, the Bermuda Championship has taken on added importance beginning this season.

Historically played across from the WGC-HSBC Championship, the successive cancellation of this event due to COVID-19 has allowed the Bermuda Championship to become a standalone FedEx Cup event on the PGA Tour. As such, not only are 500 FedEx Cup points up for grabs for the eventual winner, but also invitations to the Tournament of Champions, Players Championship, Masters and PGA Championship in 2023 — in addition to being exempt on the PGA Tour through 2025.

When put into this scope, the stakes could not be higher for a Bermuda Championship field that features rookies, journeymen and everyone in between. Denny McCarthy headlines the action as the 29-year-old is still in search of his first victory on the PGA Tour. Coming off a career year that saw him collect 11 top-20 finishes in 29 starts, the University of Virginia product will look to get his 2022-23 campaign jumpstarted alongside Seamus Power, Patrick Rodgers and a slew of PGA Tour rookies.

2022 Bermuda Championship leaderboard, scores: Ben Crane rises to the top with 9 under in Round 2 https://golfingagency.com/2022-bermuda-championship-leaderboard-scores-ben-crane-rises-to-the-top-with-9-under-in-round-2/ https://golfingagency.com/2022-bermuda-championship-leaderboard-scores-ben-crane-rises-to-the-top-with-9-under-in-round-2/#respond Sat, 29 Oct 2022 00:25:01 +0000 https://golfingagency.com/2022-bermuda-championship-leaderboard-scores-ben-crane-rises-to-the-top-with-9-under-in-round-2/

It has been three years since Ben Crane has notched a top-20 finish on the PGA Tour, and he will look to change that in a big way heading into the weekend at the 2022 Bermuda Championship. Commanding the solo lead at 14 under, the 46-year-old will be playing with house money after not even being in the field this time last week.

Gaining entry via a late sponsor’s exemption, Crane is taking full advantage of his opportunity through two days at Port Royal Golf Course. After opening his tournament with a 5-under 66, Crane was impressive in his second round, getting around the Robert Trent Jones design at 9 under to propel his name to the top of the leaderboard.

In what would be a bonus in his career, a victory for Crane would mean invitations into the Masters, PGA Championship, Players Championship and the Tournament of Champions. However, with weather rolling into Bermuda late on Friday, Crane will not only need to fend off his competition, but also Mother Nature over the final 36 holes.

Just one stroke off of Crane’s pace is another PGA Tour veteran, Aaron Baddeley. The Australian joins Crane as a seasoned presence on the first page of the leaderboard, and he is accompanied by young guns Robby Shelton, Austin Smotherman and Ben Griffin at 13 under.

The leader

1. Ben Crane (-14)

The top-20 result mentioned above occurred at the 2019 Bermuda Championship as Crane has made a habit of teeing it up in this tournament. While the potential for Crane to notch a victory this late in his career would make for an unbelievable story, he will have the odds stacked against him over the final 36 holes. In 11 starts last season between the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour, Crane missed eight cuts and was unable to collect a top-60 result, proving how much of an outlier his performance has been thus far.

“I mean, couldn’t be more encouraged. Obviously played the best golf I’ve played in a long time, and to be in this tournament is super encouraging, get to play four rounds,” said Crane. “You know, I don’t get in a lot and then to get in and the weather starts getting bad right when I finished. So, really cool to shoot 62. That 29 on the back, I didn’t see it coming, but it adds up to 29, super fun day.”

Other contenders

T2. Adam Schenk, Aaron Baddeley, Robby Shelton, Ben Griffin, Austin Smotherman (-13)

T7. Seamus Power, Kevin Yu, Zecheng Dou, Nico Echavarria, Dylan Wu (-12)

It is not about how you start, but how you finish. Beginning the week by forgetting his golf clubs at home, Schenk has shot himself into contention heading into the weekend. Playing beautifully over the last month and capturing top-20 finishes at the Shriners Children’s Open and Zozo Championship, not even a logistical hiccup could slow down the Purdue product.

“We packed our car 5 a.m. or so and we went inside to say goodbye to our dog, Bunker. Walked right passed the clubs that were packed in the garage. Showed up at the airport and opened the trunk and they weren’t there,” said Schenk. “My wife and I looked at each other and like, well, I guess we’ve got to go back. And then we were looking for flights, which was a nightmare. Obviously it’s tough to get here, not many flights in and out, but found a Jet Blue flight that got me here Wednesday and then one opened up, a direct flight from Boston on Tuesday, so we ended up booking that one.”

The weather has arrived

Murmurs of a shortened event reverberated around Port Royal GC earlier in the week with a tropical storm in the forecast. While players were spared the wrath of Mother Nature in the first round, those off in the afternoon on Friday were not as lucky. With bad weather rolling into Bermuda, the weekend is sure to be action-packed as players deal with not only nerves of a potentially life-changing victory, but also the elements.

These kids are good

It’s a great time to be a Tennessee Volunteer as freshman Caleb Surratt made his way through to the weekend in his PGA Tour debut. Finishing runner-up at the U.S. Junior Amateur this past summer, and more recently winning in his collegiate debut, the 18-year-old’s presence over the weekend goes to show just how deep the talent pool is in the world of golf.

2022 Bermuda Championship updated odds and picks

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Robby Shelton: 6-1
  • Adam Schenk: 7-1
  • Seamus Power: 15/2
  • Austin Smotherman: 10-1
  • Ben Griffin: 11-1
  • Thomas Detry: 16-1
  • Aaron Baddeley: 16-1
  • Zecheng Dou: 16-1
  • Kevin Yu: 18-1
  • Ben Crane: 22-1
  • Denny McCarthy: 22-1

Schenk was my selection earlier in the week, and there is still belief he will capture his first win on the PGA Tour. He is currently listed at 7-1, and with so much golf yet to be played in unison with some poor weather, it may be wise to venture down the odds board instead.

Chesson Hadley is an intriguing option at 80-1 and has caught my attention. Hadley entered the week as one of the best iron players and par-3 scorer in this field, and he is only five strokes off the lead at 9 under. With the weather only getting worse, those two areas of the game will be tested, which should allow him to claw back into contention come Sunday afternoon.

The unique (and often bizarre) Butterfield Bermuda Championship got underway Thursday with 500 FedEx Cup points and a likely Masters invite on the line in Southampton, Bermuda. Difficult weather seems to be in the cards for the next few days, but Round 1 was about as good as it gets and players took complete advantage of a defenseless golf course.

Austin Smotherman and Harrison Endycott lead the way after each firing a 9-under 62 Thursday, but there are some interesting names (at least given this field’s strength) just beyond them. Harry Higgs, Justin Lower, Patrick Rodgers and Nick Hardy are all in the top 20 on the leaderboard but currently well behind where the leaders sit following their gems in the first round.

The leaders

T1. Austin Smotherman, Harrison Endycott (-9)

Smotherman is a good ball-striker who had a fabulous day. He took advantage of that strong ball-striking and didn’t need to make anything crazy on the greens at Port Royal Golf Course to take over the lead.

In 29 career starts on the PGA Tour, Smotherman has just one top 10, and it came at the opposite field Barracuda Championship. He just missed out on keeping his Tour card at the Wyndham Championship in August, but rebounded at the Korn Ferry Tour Finals to get his card and earn some status on the big league tour. Despite little experience in this position, he’s been through much more stressful situations as a pro and sounds ready to contend for this tournament and what could be a career-changing win.

“Fortunately and unfortunately, I’m kind of comfortable in that position being kind of on the bubble,” Smotherman said. “I’ve had it kind of throughout my entire career now. I think the best thing for me was once I knew those [LIV] guys were going to be leaving and having those extra two weeks off before Napa just to mentally reset, I mean, we’re finishing the year grinding.

“And then obviously to have what happened at Wyndham, let that sink in, use that as some motivation coming out. So a good offseason with some time off with some really good work especially with these last two weeks off not getting into ZOZO or CJ, so I knew Bermuda was going to be my next start. Plan to play these next three out to finish the season, or finish the fall season. We’re doing a lot of good things so just keep doing what we’re doing.”

Other contenders

T3. Arjun Atwal, Adam Schenk, Scott Brown, Denny McCarthy, Robby Shelton (-8)

T8. Justin Lower, Sean O’Hair, Harry Higgs, Thomas Detry, Dylan Wu, Ben Martin, Greyson Sigg, Kevin Yu (-7)

This is quite a crew one and two back of the co-leaders, but the big name here is probably Higgs. He has not played well since finishing T14 at the Masters in April — he has just one other top 20 in that timespan — but he had it going on Thursday and is now among the favorites to get what would be his first PGA Tour victory. He spoke openly about how difficult the struggle has been for him (which is a lot of why he’s compelling to root for as a player).

“I legitimately have not played good golf since the Masters in April, and Lord knows why,” Higgs said. “Well, actually, one of the definites is I was way too hard on myself. Still wasn’t playing my best, but just had a poor enough attitude that, you know, with making the cut by a shot or two and then having a chance to get better over the weekend to kind of break out of the slump, I just didn’t have a good enough attitude to — it would cost me a shot or two and I’d miss out by one or two. and then the last couple months I wasn’t really even close. So today was nice to see successful golf shots, kind of not be shocked when I look up like, ‘Oh, wow the ball’s nowhere near where I was thinking.'”

Kim Swan’s quest

Swan, a 65-year-old former European Tour pro, was a teaching pro at Port Royal Golf Course who retired earlier this year but was given a sponsor invite into the tournament.

“As a senior citizen I’ve made a concerted effort to embrace a more healthier fitness-focused lifestyle; with this opportunity I aim to turn back the clock for one last dance in honor of all those who helped along my life’s journey and lift up the Port Royal Golf Course for the great public golf course it remains today,” he told the Royal Gazette earlier this year.

On Thursday, he broke 90 with an 18-over 89. As a 65-year-old who doesn’t play professionally. That’s big time.

2022 Bermuda Championship updated odds, picks

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook

  • Denny McCarthy: 7-1
  • Robby Shelton: 11-1
  • Adam Schenk: 12-1
  • Thomas Detry: 14-1
  • Austin Smotherman: 14-1
  • Harrison Endycott: 18-1
  • Seamus Power: 20-1
  • Justin Lower: 20-1
  • Nick Hardy: 25-1

Detry is intriguing as a talent and perhaps intriguing at 14-1. However, I’m going way off the board here with Higgs at 80-1. He hasn’t been good for most of the year, but he’s only two back, and he’s shown enough flashes of talent that 80-1 should be considered too long. He also finished runner-up on this course back in 2020. If he was 40-1, that would still be too long for me so 80-1 feels like a steal.

The 2022-23 PGA Tour season heads to Port Royal Golf Club this week for the 2022 Bermuda Championship, teeing off Thursday in Southampton, Bermuda. A week after the fall season’s most loaded tournament, the Butterfield Bermuda Championship is a chance for the lesser-known players to grab a huge victory. They will face a short but potentially challenging Port Royal Golf Club course that measures just 6,828 yards but gets most of its protection from Mother Nature. The oceanside track also features notable elevation changes, and the unpredictable weather will determine how low scores can go. Lucas Herbert went 15 under par last year to beat Patrick Reed and Danny Lee by one stroke, but he won’t be on hand to defend. Instead, players like 2021 PGA Tour winners Seamus Power and Garrick Higgo will be looking for another title, and John Daly will be among the fan favorites on a sponsor exemption.

Denny McCarthy (18-1), Mark Hubbard (22-1) and Patrick Rodgers (22-1) are the favorites in the latest 2022 Bermuda Championship odds. Power (25-1), Adrian Meronk (25-1), Aaron Rai (25-1), Thomas Detry (25-1) and Alex Smalley (25-1) are also at the top of the list in the Bermuda Championship 2022 field. Higgo is priced at 55-1, while Daly is a 1000-1 longshot. Before you lock in any 2022 Bermuda Championship picks or predictions, you need to check out the PGA Tour best bets and sleepers from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald.

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright picks and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

At this year’s Zozo Championship, McDonald nailed a first-round leader, backing 80-1 Brendan Steele before he closed with four birdies to lead by one stroke after Thursday’s round. The expert also hit two of his three matchup plays there, including tournament winner Keegan Bradley over Corey Conners, one of the pre-tournament favorites. Then last week at the CJ Cup, McDonald was all over defending champion Rory McIlroy, who would go on to win the tournament and defend his title. Anyone who followed McDonald’s golf betting advice has cashed in huge.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Bermuda Championship field and is locking in his best bets, top sleepers and favorites to avoid. You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions.

Top 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship expert picks

One surprise among McDonald’s picks: The golf insider is fading favorite McCarthy. The expert expects good things from the Maryland native this season, but he hasn’t seen it yet and he doesn’t see value at these odds. McCarthy had five top-10 finishes last season, including a T-7 at the U.S. Open, but he hasn’t come close so far in this campaign. His best is a tie for 25th in four starts, missing the cut in one of those. The 29-year-old doesn’t have a PGA Tour victory, and the putting and excellent work around the green from last season haven’t appeared yet.

On the other hand, McDonald is eyeing another player who doesn’t have a victory in Englishman Callum Tarren. The 32-year-old is one of the longest hitters in this field, averaging 310 yards off the tee, and that will give him an advantage – especially when the wind cranks up. He also has been strong on approach and with his putter, and it is going to take a well-rounded game to win at Port Royal. Tarren has been up and down, missing two cuts but also tying for 13th at the Sanderson Farms in his three starts. McDonald expects him to surge this week. See who else to pick here.

The 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship could present the perfect opportunity for a player to win their first-ever PGA Tour event. Lucas Herbert captured his first PGA Tour title at this event last year, which bodes well for those looking to breakthrough for the first time. Play gets underway from Port Royal Golf Course on Thursday, Oct. 27. Should your Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2022 picks include a player looking for his first PGA win like Denny McCarthy, who’s racked up 15 top-10 finishes in his career?

According to the latest 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship odds, McCarthy and Thomas Detry are listed as the 16-1 co-favorites. They’re followed by Seamus Power (18-1), Nick Hardy (20-1), Adrian Meronk (21-1) and Mark Hubbard (24-1) on the PGA odds board. Before locking in your 2022 Bermuda Championship picks, be sure to see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine.

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up over $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model included J.T. Poston in its best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet hit at +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $1,100. At the 2022 Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scottie Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Jon Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2022 Bermuda Championship field is locked, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship: McCarthy, one of the co-favorites at 16-1, fails to claim his first PGA Tour title and barely crack the top-five. McCarthy is coming off an impressive season on the PGA Tour, recording five top-10 finishes, which included a T-7 showing at the U.S. Open in June. However, the 29-year-old has struggled early in the 2022-23 season, finishing T-37 or worse in each of his last three starts.

McCarthy’s recent troubles can be directly attributed to his inconsistent putting stroke. In fact, McCarthy enters this week’s event ranked 127th in total putting (217.8), 154th in putting average (1.789) and 162nd in 3-putt avoidance (3.57%), which doesn’t bode well for his chances to win this week. He’s not a strong pick to win it all and there are far better values in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2022 field.

Another surprise: Russell Knox, a 31-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. Knox is a target for anyone looking for a huge payout after a missed cut and a T-74 finish in his last two events. Despite the uninspiring performances in his last two outings, he had a promising start to the year with top-25 finishes at the Fortinet Championship and Sanderson Farms Championship.

In last season’s Bermuda Championship, Knox finished tied for 12th after missing the cut at the Shriners Children’s Open before that. Knox’s high bounce-back potential is rooted in his ability as a specialist when it comes to approach play. Last season, he finished fourth on the tour in greens in regulation percentage (71.41%) and 25th in strokes gained: approach the green (.450). Knox finished on a high note at the Zozo Championship, when he ended things with a final round 67, and he’ll look to carry that momentum with him into this weekend. See who else to pick here.

How to make 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 28-1 or longer who will make surprising runs. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s PGA picks here.

So who will win the Butterfield Bermuda Championship 2022? And which longshots stun the golfing world? The strongest field early in the 2022-23 PGA Tour season is followed by the weakest as the 2022 Bermuda Championship welcomes an eclectic bunch to Port Royal Golf Course. With none of the game’s elites set to tee it up this week, a wide-open affair is likely to be in store on this Robert Trent Jones design as bombers and plodders alike have gotten around this property in an effective manner in years past.

Despite the relative lack of star power traveling to Bermuda, the stakes remain the same. The Bermuda Championship will be receiving standalone status for the 2022-23 season, so the winner will be afforded all the riches of a run-of-the-mill PGA Tour stop including 500 FedEx Cup points, major championship exemptions and job security for the foreseeable future.

Simply put, a win this week could prove to be life-changing. Rookies, DP World Tour regulars, journeymen, veterans and everyone in between will look to give it their all in hopes of securing playing rights for the next few years. Headlined by Denny McCarthy, other PGA Tour staples planning to tee it up in Bermuda include Seamus Power, Mark Hubbard, Patrick Rodgers and even 56-year-old John Daly.

Let’s take a closer look at this week’s 2022 Bermuda Championship with odds provided via Caesars Sportsbook.

Event Information

Event: 2022 Bermuda Championship | Dates: Oct. 27-30
Location: Port Royal Golf Course — Southhampton, Bermuda
Par: 71 | Yardage: 6,828 | Purse: $6,500,000

2022 Bermuda Championship field, odds

  • Denny McCarthy (16-1): After nearly playing his way into the Tour Championship in 2021-22, McCarthy has struggled out of the gate. He has only garnered one top-25 result in four starts, but the way in which he finished T37 last week at The CJ Cup may be encouraging. Ranking inside the top half of each tee-to-green metric at Congaree, it was surprisingly the putter which let the 29-year-old down. In three prior appearances at the Bermuda Championship, he has acquitted himself nicely with finishes of T15-T4-T39.
  • Thomas Detry (18-1): Capturing some PGA Tour status via the Korn Ferry Tour Playoffs, Detry has taken full advantage of his playing opportunities. Finishing T12 at the Fortinet Championship and T9 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, the Belgian fell off his rapid pace just a touch at the Shriners Children’s Open. After a couple weeks of rest, Detry should be able to threaten at Port Royal GC where he finished T22 a season ago.
  • Seamus Power (22-1)
  • Mark Hubbard (22-1): The 33-year-old was just a few scrappy moments away from claiming the Sanderson Farms Championship in his second start of the season. Falling short in Jackson, Mississippi, Hubbard has since continued to play well with finishes of T28 and a solo 66th in his last two outings. Port Royal GC has been a nice landing spot for short hitters like Brendon Todd and Brian Gay in recent years, and may prove to be the same for Hubbard.
  • Adrian Meronk (22-1)
  • Nick Hardy (25-1): In his second season on the PGA Tour, Hardy has looked much more comfortable than at any point during his rookie campaign. The catalyst for the quick start is simple: iron play. The former Illinois standout leads this Bermuda Championship field in both strokes gained tee to green and strokes gained approach over the last two months. If able to find some form on and around the green, Hardy will contend for his first win on the PGA Tour.
  • Aaron Rai (25-1)
  • Patrick Rodgers (28-1)
  • Justin Lower (28-1): The man who made bogey on the 72nd hole of the Wyndham Championship to fall out of the top 125 is proving his second chance was warranted. Lower leads this field over the last two months in total strokes gained, and was in with a chance at the Fortinet Championship before stumbling on the final day. That shortcoming hasn’t deterred the 33-year-old, though, as he since registered finishes of T45 and T20. With a T17 finish at last season’s Bermuda Championship, all signs point to Lower being a factor.
  • S.H. Kim (30-1)

After the biggest event of the fall portion of the PGA Tour season, the grinders and up-and-coming players return to the spotlight at the 2022 Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Rory McIlroy won the star-studded CJ Cup last week for his 23rd tour victory, regaining the world No. 1 ranking in the process. Now, the likes of Seamus Power, Garrick Higgo and Chad Ramey will be seeking a second tour win starting Thursday at Port Royal Golf Club. Lucas Herbert got his first tour triumph last year, winning the tournament in Southampton, Bermuda at 15 under par. The Australian shot 69 on Sunday to hold off Patrick Reed and Danny Lee by one stroke. Port Royal is one of the shortest courses on the PGA Tour at just 6,828 yards, but elevation changes and unpredictable weather on the oceanside course can make things interesting. John Daly also is scheduled to compete on a sponsor exemption.

The latest 2022 Bermuda Championship odds list Denny McCarthy as a 14-1 favorite, followed by Adrian Meronk (18-1) and Thomas Detry (18-1). Power (25-1) also is among the favorites along with Mark Hubbard (25-1) in the Bermuda Championship 2022 field. Herbert elected not to return to defend his title.

Shockingly, McDonald is fading McCarthy, even though he is the favorite and one of the best ball-strikers in the field. But the expert says the 29-year-old hasn’t quite found his form from last season, when he posted five top-10 finishes. He hasn’t finished higher than 25th in four outings this year, missing one cut. McCarthy also hasn’t won on the PGA Tour, and while this might be a good place to post his first victory, McDonald doesn’t like the price in this wide-open field. “Without a victory on the PGA Tour, McCarthy is an easy name to pass over at 14-1,” he says.

On the other hand, the expert is intrigued by Callum Tarren, a big hitter who was tied with Rory McIlroy for second after the first round of this year’s U.S. Open. He went on to tie for 31st, but he had three top-10 finishes last season. He was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard at last year’s Bermuda Championship, so he will have unfinished business. The 32-year-old tied for 13th at the Sanderson Farms but has missed the cut in two other outings so far during this campaign. But the Englishman is in the top 20 in the field in several strokes gained categories. See who else to pick here.

How to make 2022 Bermuda Championship golf picks

Before this week’s PGA Tour event, McDonald has locked in his best bets for the 2022 Bermuda Championship. He has several outright plays, including a monster longshot that would bring a massive payout of 100-1. You can only find out who it is, and get the rest of McDonald’s PGA picks and analysis, at SportsLine.
